Suilleabhain replied to Suilleabhain's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
That works for me. Thanks I'll look into them as well. -
Anyone have any experience with how well these grow, how fast to fruit and so on. I have a large clearing with some apples and I want to jack it up a bit with berries and maybe these. Already have a plot with rye, clover and turnip Thanks

Fast Eddie, I have the same set up and the rack is getting some girth right now. Muzzy, I'm waiting for my tax bill from Rockland to show up any day now!!!

Stopped in the Iron Kettle on Rt 16 in South Wales for breakfast. Guess what was on the specials. Sausage, bisquits and gravy with two eggs. Just what I needed.

Just went in the covered Corningware with 1/2 cup of red wine, carrots, onion, thyme, sage, salt & pepper. 3 hours from now at 325 it will be just dandy.

That's a classic, good mix there. You get 5 points towards a free Mossy Oak, Fleece Lined, Waterproof, 3-9 power Scabberjay from Cabela's.

I planted a crab 10 years ago. 1st year a bear knocked it down for teh apples. After that nobody touches it. They don't seem to care for teh little red ones. Neighbor has one that puts out quarter sized yellow crabs and they love it. Guy that tends our food plot swears by white turnips. They eat them frozen in late winter when all else is gone. So this year he planted clover, rye grass and turnips. We'll see. Arbor Society has hathorn bushes that put out a nut and grow well and fast. I'm getting some of them this spring.

we have a 4X4 about 1/4 mile from where we shoot. One of us gets the bike while the other field dresses. We are 59 & 67.

Trespassing aside, if I had gut shot a deer and you killed it...I'd have come over thanked you, shook your hand and helped you gut YOUR deer. Last thing I want is to see one get away in that condition.

That sounds full bore viscious and meant to send a message when they hit more than one. Did you report it to DEC as well as the cops?

I used to take chicken soup, now coffee. My best deer so far I shot when he walked up as I was standing with the chicken soup cup in my hand wearing yellow rain gear. Put down the cup, kneel in the stand and fire. Sometimes its just meant to be.

Oddest thing you have seen in the deer woods.
Suilleabhain replied to agross's topic in Deer Hunting
I climbed into my treestand one morning and had company from a rat. Another time a chickadee landed on my boot, climbed my leg and arm to my shoulder, hopped across the collar of my coat, bit me on the ear lobe and flew away. Wierdest thing I saw was when I was 15 in a tree stand with my brother. Late afternoon and we are watching a deer come in waiting for a shot. It walked next to a hemlock and some kind of cat jumped on its back and took off chasing the deer and screaming down the mountain. Nearly gave us the chits. It was too far and too low light to see whether it was a bobcat or a lion. -
What type of .30-06 ammunition to use for deer hunting?
Suilleabhain replied to mossy725's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
My brother is using those new low recoil rounds and they do some good damage. He's been very successful with them. -
Just finished getting ready and going hunting, come home and December's bills are already waiting for me. Seems like I just paid these!!!

I read that at my brother's. Condolences to his family and his hunting partner. I wouldn't want to have to live with that memory.

Nice deer all of you!!! I saw one deer in 3 days, a spike & I put him in the freezer. Tell me, how far do you think a deer can run when you put a 12 ga slug through his windpipe and both arteries. He bled like he was heart shot, big wide trail of drops, smears and spatter and he still ran 200 yards!! Butcher in 9H had some beautiful racks and one bear. He had 75 deer going by 4 o'clock on Sunday. -
How many deer have you shot & not recovered?
Suilleabhain replied to nybuckboy's topic in Deer Hunting
Two since 1968 both when I was young and dumb and throwing lead. In the last 30 years I have taken two shots at a deer only once. I settled down and picked my shots rather than take the hail mary's and the running shots. And I still relive thos blown shots to this day. One I will never understand. I had a doe & buck coming downhill straight at me at half speed. I was in a stand 15 feet up. Since they wouldn't stop I took a shot chest on and missed. The deer ran parallel to me at 30 yards and stopped. I had the gun rested on the rail and fired. They dropped over a ridge and immediately bedded. Had I waited longer he may have stiffened up but I pushed him and had little blood every now and then for about 2 miles then lost his trail in a water soaked field about 10 acres square. I believe I hadn't cleared the scope picture and was holding low and just clipped him. -
Glad this came up. My brother & I were just talking about the lost recipe and old friend who passed on had. Did it with moose too. Another bit for the files. Ever try red eye gravy? Same stuff just a dash of coffee grounds as I recall for color.

Thanks John I'll take note of them. Appreciate it, Bill

Funny story about archery shops. Guy in work gets his sons on weekends. So, he takes them to an archery range for a shoot. These are newbies and never shot a bow. So teh guy at the counter says ince its their first let's give them a quick lesson. The guy byteh way had just bought the older kid a little compound bow. Guy behind teh counter says yeah yeah but he should have something more like this.here try it....you get the picture. So they shoot and get ready to go and the cash register starts ringing. Lessons, bow rental for the test firing, shooting time, special this, special that. They cleaned his clock. My suggestion...read and research first. You have all winter. When you go thru the pros & cons and Consumer Reports et al, then start shopping and go to a pro shop to test them.

If I get one in 9H we have a place. If it takes me to the last weekend and 1st of muzzleloader in 3A I'll need a butcher in Suffolk County. Haven't had to have a local butcher since I moved hear. Where do you Long Island guys take yours?

Same to you guys, best of luck & have fun. Safe trip, safe home

Doing the right thing or the correct thing?
Suilleabhain replied to BRMee's topic in General Chit Chat
Years back my club was on a drive with a neighboring club. They shot up a doe pretty well and when they came on it they decided it was too shot up for them and walked away. One young guy in my club, probably late teens had a doe permit and tagged it. You did the right thing and you showed the kids that sometimes you take one for the team. Well done. -
I'm getting all squirrelly at work ticking off the days and hours. Been thru my gear twice. Can't wait to get on the road
