  1. i used a five pin spothog for years and changed to a single pin HHA last fall and took two bucks with I love it a little pricey but its worth it.
  2. I just bought a new Mathews NoCam last fall that replaced my old elk bow a mathews lx loved the bow but has seen better days.i hunted elk in the San Juan Mts in southern Co up to 11-12 thousand feet tough on the lungs and body.i trained for 6 months climbing and running i was 50 at the time.I had two pairs of goretex boots and took along plenty of mole skin for blisters and only needed it once.Goretex rain gear is a must too.I also used a cat quiver for my arrows.I hope you enjoy your hunt and like the other guys said listen to your guide and take his advice.
  3. You should never go in their bedding area before hunting season starts,i will check them out in the winter ...find trails leading to the bedding area.I never go in the "sanctuary"in upstate ny but have two cams next to trails leading into it. Some bucks in my area travel continuously and have numerous bedding areas. we have no farms but have a swamp that connects to other swamps so the deer can be any where in a few miles from the day before .i just had a Bushnell cam finally die the cam had been in the swamp trail for two years and the deer were use to it.I had a nice buck bed down right under it one night right off the trail.I only check it once a month.
  4. A friend and I hunt a property that has a bedding area i call the sanctuary ,my friend always try to hunt in it .He always gets busted no matter how many times I tell him to stay out of it.I shot a nice buck one year that he pushed out ,he wasn't too happy with me needless to say we parted ways this year.I never push a bedding area even though I know it might have a good buck in it. I have shot a few nice bucks coming from or going to this area.
  5. I shot two deer with rage hypodermics and had one arrow pass thru a 6 pt buck and the other was a doe and the arrow was sticking out the other side . The buck shot blade was just slightly bent but not a lot. This was the first time I ever had a pass thru, never had any trouble with rage.
  6. I,m in my stand at least an hour before sunrise I use a summit viper and its really not that loud I just take my time. I love sitting in the dark and watching the sky slowly lighten up.The other day I called an owl to me .I'm hunting near a swamp and small river so there's always some kind of activity with water foul and critters moving about.I,m after a big swamp buck his scrapes always have swamp reeds around them I guess he gets them caught on his rack.
  7. Last week I arrowed a 6 pointer and a small doe .I hunt about 3/4 of a mile in ,first dragged the buck out then the doe and returned for my bow and pack. The first half was slightly uphill then downhill all the way.I had to stop frequently with the buck.the doe was easier . I guess I was so pumped-up with adrenaline I just kept going till every thing was at the truck, drank two bottles of gateraid and a recovery drink .i,m 63 years old and the next day i could barley walk lol.
  8. Shot this bucklast year and found a swacker in his skull, found out later that a guy arrowed him chasing a doe but he turned at the last minute and hit him in the skull. The swacker just missed his brain cavity he seemed fine a month later.
  9. no they have held up well they come with a felt strap and they can be adjusted to arrow length...when i hunt elk its slung over my shoulder ...i also have a backpack on it doesn't get in the way for me...in my stand i pull it up with my bow and hang it on the tree within reach...just remember to make sure you put the rope through the strap...last fall i got in my stand in the dark and pulled my bow up and no quiver missed the strap had to climb down and attach it....bad when your using a climber..lol
  10. I also use a cat quiver, actually have two.one for elk hunting and the other cat quiver mini for deer. Love them!
  11. first off what length is you rod ,one piece or two piece, what ounce is it rated for.you see its important, are you going to cast lures or use for chunking bait on the bottom.I have different rods lengths and each one is rated for different lure weights 2-4 oz ect.I mainly cast lures and live eels at night here on Cape Cod.i use 25-40 lb leaders made with fluorocarbon,if your fishing rocky areas you might need the heaver leaders get spro swivels they come in different poundage 50lb will do.what are you using for line for example 20lb mono or heaver braid which has a smaller diameter than mono and cast better. I would talk to as many surf guys you know to get the right set up for you.what kind of reel are you using as you can see its pretty hard to give one kind of answer without seeing the setup you have.
  12. look how many trail cams are in use
  13. I found the left antler from the buck in the second picture ,it was about a half mile from this spot.I never found the right one.
  14. Any detecting in national parks will result in loosing your gear.trespassing on private property using detectors usually doesn't go over with the owners I know from experience. those shows usually are more set ups and hype than real.I would make sure you know your laws in each area.
  15. This trail cam is on Cape Cod behind my house in Truro,I also hunt in Madison county.I wanted to test this here before putting in NY works great and the bucks seem to be just starting to drop their antlers.
  16. Last week i climbed up my tree around 5:15 with my summit strapped in pulled up my mathews put the cat quiver on the hook and nocked an arrow.I just sat down and laid my bow on the padded railing like i always do until first light .I just moved a little ,the bow went over the railing.I was lucky the bow landed on the pine needles the arrow never came off the string.climbed down and everything looked good drew the bow a few times and changed the arrow out.I shot a fat 4 pointer and hour later, all I can say is sometimes juck is with you.I now keep a death grip on that bow.
  17. I have hunted in the San Jaun Mts Co 4 times and once in the Scape Goat wildernest in MT . When I hunted in Co we would be 9-12 ft and after 10 I would get a massive headache the first night and follwed the guides suggestion drink plenty of water and I took ibruporpin and it worked,as for shortness of breath you can work through it .we had one guy who couldn't adjust .was sent down to 7000 ft.I had no problem in Montana at 5-6000ft except for a grizzly encounter. Good Luck
  18. Great shots my wife looks forward to seeing your pics.
  19. A couple things to consider hydration and being in top shape to hunt at 12 thousand feet I used a camelback system fits in your pack, and has a tube to drink out of do not need a bottle. also at altitude some people have a hard time adjusting, headaches or nausea I also use a hydration mix and recovery mix made for biking comes in powder easy to carry mixes with water.what part of Co are you hunting in ?
  20. I just opened a vacum pac of meat from 10/2010 and it still smelled good its the last from last year.I also recently opened some tuna from last year and it still was good.I think your meat might be bad .
