Have not hung a deer for more than a day in years...mine are usually butchered within two days. Our venison is always delicious. I think the real key to good venison is handling in the field. A well-placed shot and a neat job of field dressing goes a long way toward good venison.

Early replied to BfloHunter's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking

Thermacell foot warmers
Early replied to Big Indian's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
No, he is not. He is 75 yrs. old...has suffered with cold feet for years. Bought the Thermacell Insoles this year. Says his feet are finally warm, for a change! -
Thermacell foot warmers
Early replied to Big Indian's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
A buddy of mine bought and uses them. He thinks they are GREAT! -
No matter....With Camillus out of business (Camillus, USA, that is...), your knife is a valuable piece. Hold onto it!!!

I will out-bid him.....Bourbon, instead of beer!!

I have read that the cycle is from 7 - 13 years...Take your pick. Here in Rensselaer County, hares have been scarce to non-existent for the past couple of years. During that same time, I found them to be plentiful in the Adirondacks. Interested in a guided hunt??....Give Jamie Frasier a call at ADIRONDACK MOUNTAIN AND STREAM Good Luck, Early

OLD! Very Old .22's.. Help please!!
Early replied to BlasterMaster42's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Wow...Looks like a Cutts Compensator, added after-the-fact....which would, in fact, require tubes to function. My suggestion: Have that ugly mess cut off, and the barrel threaded to accept modern choke tubes...RemChoke might be best. -
OLD! Very Old .22's.. Help please!!
Early replied to BlasterMaster42's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
A shotgun that old will have a fixed choke...will not accept choke tubes. Easy to determine the choke with a simple choke tool. Do that...and you will know what your shotgun is good for. -
Knowing the function of kidneys...I'll pass!!

M-girl, A bit touchy/testy, aren't you? Hillbilly's question was entirely appropriate. I hope you fill your DMP with a genuine doe...or don't fill it at all.

.177 break barrel, 1000 fps, with scope, like new. $68 @ WalMart online...$40, picked up in Captial District. PM if interested

Used to be a reg. requiring leaving evidence of sex on the carcass....Not so anymore: deer are either legal antlered...or anterless. Perfectly legal to carry loaded gun into the woods before legal deer shooting time. Coyotes are in season and can be hunted at night.

are rifle to get my son for small game?Affordable?
Early replied to arrow nocker's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Another question: Since air guns fall under the same restrictiions as firearms in NY (500' restriction), why not get the kid a .22? -

Early replied to arrow nocker's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
OK...I'll take your word for it, but...would it hit hard enough to kill anything at 75 or 100 yards. You are the first person I ever heard suggest that a pellet gun is a 75 yard hunting gun. -

950 fps...22 pellet gun..."Dead on @ 75 yds"...Don't think so! -
Didn't compensate correctly on the bead sight-just grazed the underbelly
Early replied to 13BVET's topic in Deer Hunting
Interesting: Most miss high with a single bead sight...caused by keeping the head too high. You didn't mention the distance for the low miss....It might have been caused by simple slug drop. Do some work on the target range...You can figure it out. -
Two pieces of advice: First, scout...scout...scout...and scout before the season. (I know...too late for that this year...Well, not really: When you are in the woods, you are always scouting...if only for tomorrow.) Second, follow moog5050's advice and pattern hunters...play off their movements to see deer they spook. On public land, position yourself between marked trails or access roads that other hunters might use. Find road or trail or road-trail intersections and hike in away from them to a spot that puts you equidistant from both. Get to such spots early...and stay late, but if you do decide to move around: scout as you do so. Good Luck, Early

Terramar thermals
Early replied to NY Region 3 Trapper's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I have not tried Terramar thermal wear, but I have used their moisture management shirts for summer workouts. They are top of the line. My guess is you will like those thermals. Let us know.... -
Hey Buckwild...If you have an Ithaca 37....You're doing OK!!!!

Early replied to Felonious_Monk's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
With all due respect....I would starve before eating roasted tree rat...emphasis on RAT. A nice wheat beer?? (Is there such a thing?)...I would need Wild Turkey 101 to get roasted tree rat down.- 4 replies

Early replied to Sogaard's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
So...some of you think that the NRA is all good...and the government is all bad. Absolutely incredible!...and quite wrong! -
Looking for a good folding knife for deer hunting? Want one in bright orange, so you don't lose/leave it behind after gutting your deer? Give this one a look....I used one for the first time last year...Love it!! http://www.knifesupply.com/eshop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=EKA735608
