  1. Most reviews I have seen for the Pardner pumps has been good....despite their being quite heavy.
  2. Tenderloins are inside the body cavity, up against the backbone; Loins or backstraps are outside the body cavity, running up and down along the spine. At least that's the way we see it here. So, your "upper loins" would, in fact, be backstraps.

    meat storage

I like to put wrapped packs of similar meat: steak, stew, burger, etc. in airtight plastic (see through) tubs and then stack these in the freezer. Helps to organize the freezer and keep the meat longer.
  4. Pounds and pounds of jerky....made from tenderloin and backstrap. Somebody does not like venison!!!
  5. Got a good laugh.......Thought this was probably about food plots (legal bait)
  6. Got into some of this stuff the other day....My orange fleece gloves are covered with those little round burrs. Any suggestions for easy removal of them...other than the painstaking process of picking them off one at a time? (Note: I tried the knife blade trick that I use with stick tights.....doesn't work!) Thanks, Early
  7. Easier to find gold or oil than to find pheasants at Bear Spring !!!!
  8. Slugs I like best out of my smoothbores: The old, obsolete ACTIV's and either version of the modern Aero Slugs from Fiocchi.
  9. Nice job on the mount....Antler mounts, I like! Sorry you had to be subjected to the nit-picker on this post.
  10. Hmmm.....Can DEC really answer any questions...in language that we can understand??
  11. Cops....Don't you just love 'em?? Who do they "protect & serve"?? Read Robin Hood...Not much difference between the Nottingham Sheriff's deputies and the cops of today!
  12. Hint: Deer are much easier than women!

    Snowshoes

Mike, your reply has me scratching my head...!!
  14. Cavemen rule!!! They are true carnivores...sans marinade!!!
  15. Aw, c'mon.....Differing opinions are the spice...or is it marinade...of life. But it does bother me the great lenghts people go to to make the eating of venison possible. "UGH....Me hunter....Just can't stand taste of wild meat!!!" If you don't like venison...don't kill deer!
  16. Ahh....Finally, a good reason for marinating meat. But...isn't that why we have ground venison?? You guys don't marinate your ground venison, do you?
  17. Are all the marinade guys, city guys?? Just wondering
  18. Honestly....Are you a marinade guy, or not? The "club over the head" has me confused.
  19. Really, guys, there is nothing wrong with admitting you really don't like venison and must come up with all sorts of additives to make it edible. Hey, there are people who put ketchup on prime rib...Go figure!
  20. Seasoning makes venison a little better....NOT! Now, I do understand it is a matter of taste, but if you think seasoning improves venison, you really must check out the thread here for Country Fried Venison....best, complicated recipe I have ever seen for ruining venison. Most "seasoning" recipes for venison would work better with the tongues out of old work boots...or, at least as good!

    Snowshoes

bigpaul is right: We used to hunt/kill a lot of snowshoes in Delaware County. As the lands we hunted were added to the Forest Preserve and thereafter grew to mature forest, the hare population dropped off markedly. You might explore a bit by driving roads between Downsville and Roscoe (Brock Mt...Campbell Mt...Fuller Hill...Morton Hill, etc) after a fresh snow to look for hare tracks.
  22. Despite my being a horrible tracker, it is an exciting way to hunt. My WMA is large enough to track, but one may accidently "drive" a buck to another hunter while doing so. But, do give it a try....it is surely more like "real hunting" than sitting in a treestand for hours at a time!
  23. There are some very good Japanese knives...German, too, but I still prefer knives made in the USA. If I had to do all my butchering/processing with Old Hickory knives...cheap though they may be...I'd be happy and do a good job! Steve....Sorry about the "easily learned" being misleading. I should have said "can" be learned with sufficient practice. And, even at that, some may choose to have someone else sharpen their knives or use a sharpening machine like Chef's Choice. (My neighbor bought one...we have yet to figure out how to use it! Maybe we are idiots!) My brother can sharpen a chainsaw chain better than anyone I know. He has tried to show me how...I choose to have mine done at Ace Hardware. (Yes....he called me an idiot!)
  24. You completely misinterpret what I said. Knife sharpening is a skill...one that can be learned, with practice. One who cannot do it is NOT an idiot....never said that. But, someone who cannot do it today, may be able to do it very well in the future with sufficient practice.
