  1. And virgil the spots south of the LIE in Otis Pike are also accessible with the seasonal pass only and you do not need to check in at Ridge Station. But of course the best spots are north...
  2. They say to wait until after the second frost and bugs will die
  3. Yea its almost like everything has been pushed up 1 month and I'm a month behind. Going to plant clover this weekend i think im on schedule with that but we still have two new stands to hang and two rooms in the house to paint(pipes busting last winter) not to mention trimming all regular stands, checking camereas etc...but i guess these are good problems to have.
  4. Main problem with Sarnoff is scouting before the season is risky with all the ticks and chiggers out there. Had them(chiggers) bad a few years back walking lots#16 and 17. All I remember is sitting on stairs in my pool with washcloth and bottle of clorox. That Really sucked! Guess scouting in feb/march is a better idea. I did see some nice rubs though.
  5. You know it's funny I was just thinking about getting new bolt action in .270.....now I'm rethinking this. Don't have any bear around and figured I had plenty of gun for whitetail.
  6. Damn Bushwack now my 30/30's not big enough? Good thing nobody told that buck last year.
  7. Was just checking DEC website. Said to check back for season dates but i clicked on deer season link and it had 2012/2013 dates and maps....Oct 1st is opener
  8. Ok im going to order soil test from Whitetail Inst and in the meantime collect my samples. What i am trying to do is start out with a hunting plot running the length of my field edge. The deer are already crossing the field in the morning going from neighbors hayfield back to their bedding area so i dont want to cut down all the high grass just a long strip on edge of the field. I have about 3 to 4 acres of field so if im successful i ca always expand. I hunt mostly with bow but as im getting older im leaning more towards the gun. I guess i should start with plants that are not too hard to grow?
  9. Thanks Dave, right now i have about 10yds by maybe 30yds and plan on doubling this next weekend. I have an ATV but thats all as of now. I am willing to purchase/rent some equipment to do this right. But if can be done by hand thats fine too. And yes I do not know where/how to test the soil.
  10. I like to plant my first hunting plot this year but have absolutely no experience growing anything. I have about a 3 acre field with a nice inside corner and i figure i could plant a strip about 10 or so yds the length of the field edge. its southwest facing and gets plenty of sun. I already hit it with roundup back in may and will be hitting it again after the 4th of july. What should my next steps be? Do i have to disc? Lime? Fertilize? Seed? All of the above? Any help/advice would be great.
  11. Hey Griff I'm right in Smyrna and we can hear them howling n barking every night. I also find a few dead deer every spring but not sure if they are coyote casualties, car accidents or whatever but I know the locals have been trappin them this past winter with regular success. Like previous posts we always talk abt doin some coyote huntin but usually do not go up there between the end of deer season through to april. If season was year long I know I would do some after noon during turkey....Also I have to say last season was by far the best for deer sightings Ive had in the 10 plus yrs I have hunted the area
  12. Hey Deerthug forget the poodles I have a nice Beagle mix i will drop him off just send me address...he luvs to hunt
  13. Does anyone fish the Otselic River and if so what baits are working? Im looking to start fishing again after 20 yrs so any help would be appreciated
  14. Had the best season ever here in 7M.....usually go days without seeing deer especially in bow season but every time i went out this year i had deer all around me. Also saw as many bucks as does although most were small. Shot 2 biggest bucks i saw, 160 lb. 5 pt in bow season and a smaller 6 pt opening morning gun. Brought brother in law and he bagged forkhorn about 5 mins before me same morning. Im not sure why this year was so good but i hunted 2 new spots this year so maybe it was just the change in location...also they were diggin n drillen gas well across the street so maybe all the deer came onto my property...
