  1. You should let that go, otherwise you are going to have a bad time every season. That's hunting. Anybody can be fortunate enough to be at the right spot at the right time. Just enjoy your hunt no matter the results. Have a great time out there and appreciate the fact that you can be out there. In my opinion, the problem lies in the culture of counting inches. Counting inches of bone is what is diminishing the hunting tradition and turning it into a sport of numbers. Everyone should just be grateful and happy for what they harvest because as you all know, walking into the woods and doing it all yourself is never easy. Some years you might get a nice buck. Others you might get a nice Doe. Others you might get a fawn, and others you might get nothing. Just enjoy the tradition and stop counting meaningless inches. Deer no longer are respected as deer. They are now simply called 140's, 150's, 200's, etc... To me its not about jealousy over how many inches another person gets, either with tons of money or on his own. You just have to appreciate every day in the woods no matter the outcome. It will destress you and make the act of hunting much more enjoyable. It is good to be concerned about these shows and the businesses supporting them. They are the reason anti hunters have so much ammo against the hunting tradition. One of the most repeated anti hunter remarks is trophy shooting. That is what these shows represent.
  2. Speaking of fins to feathers, what ever happened to the 2011 buck contest prize of getting a mount from them? Anyone use Whites Taxidermy in Hancock or She Wolfs Taxidermy in Roscoe?
  3. Ok giving him a break with friendly advice: 1. Never mention too dark and shots fired. 2. Please check out this chart, its DEC's shooting times. Before or after their time is illegal. http://www.dec.ny.go...213guidesun.pdf 3. I would recommend learning to bowhunt. It will teach you patience that will help you become a better hunter overall.
  4. Didn't get a bow kill, didn't get a public land deer like I was looking for, but having my dad go out hunting with me on opening day and dragging back two deer was the best feeling. He got the Doe, I got a Buck.
  5. Isn't it against the law to carry a firearm while bowhunting or does that just apply to rifle/shotguns? Not like I can get a pistol anyways...
  6. I AGREE with Antler Restrictions but the 'shoot a doe' argument is not valid. If it were only that easy on public or some private land in the mountains. Meat in the freezer constitutes first thing you see some places and not everyone has the time off work/family or lives where they can drive 20 minutes to a hunt. The west is also full of legal baiting and agriculture to the max, thats why there are more deer and they grow bigger.
  7. Hell yea, I got so tired I started filming my own hunts to share, and show some real hunting from an average hunter. I just scan youtube for real hunting videos now adays. Much more interesting and no commercials. Start filming yours and share with us. It's actually fun to film them. TV is all business. There will never be a show without junk after junk to be showcased for sponsorship. Oh and that c'mere deer crap, I think that is from Hank Parker and sons. WOW, I can't even stand to watch that. I consider that trigger pulling. New hunters will never learn to actually hunt a Whitetail if all they do is bait.
  8. Hi all, This is a new format and more of a video journal of this season's upcoming hunts. Its all me, no wildlife shots yet. Its about tough public land hunting with the bow. The series will be about Start to Finish. Start is scouting, however, Finish is not the kill. Finish is going through field dressing, dragging, skinning/butchering, processing and making meals. Not for everyone. If you need a dose of big bucks and corn, turn on the Outdoor channel. Thanks and hope you enjoy it for what it is. 9. lol, you sound like my hunting partner. he did the same for squirrel last year and missed. don't have blunt tips, might pick them up at gander if i got time on the way up, otherwise was gonna use field tips. i have a real old .22 that i used to take my first rabbit and squirrel when i was a kid, but the scope is so off and damaged. i might just remove the scope and test the iron sights... yea, bow is gonna be real tough on those critters.
  10. I haven't squirrel hunted since I was a kid... but this weekend, being that it is opening weekend for squirrel and I wanted to scout for deer, I think I'll bring the bow for practice and hopefully catch a small meal. Only thing is, going on public land, and should I be worried about carrying a bow to shoot squirrel with while doing some scouting for deer season? Was thinking I'd leave a written note on the car window 'squirrel hunting'.
  11. I am seriously considering hunting Black Bear in September this year. I just wanted to confirm that I need to use my Last year's Bear tag before Oct 1st, correct? Anyone else going up there for Bear? The next thing I need to figure out is whether I go with Bow or Rifle... I would love to bow one. Also whether I spot and stalk or treestand... ugh it feels like last season ended just yesterday now.
  12. My full story is in the Buck contest for 'My First Catskills Buck' (first signed up under chrismgon, then changed to this nick) I am also keeping a hunting log for this season here if anyone is interested: http://www.huntingch...tskills-Journey But the picture below will say it all... PS: This is a Garage in Queens NY, not ur usual country boy.
  13. If i lived even 30 minutes from the areas I hunt I'd maybe consider an afternoon or morning here and there. But living in the city, with weekends mostly only, its dawn to dusk, hunting hard (hiking in deep, waiting them out, not coming out of the woods till its dark) until I get something. I do not even go up unless I have the full day. Cost for gas and tolls is too high to visit just one or half a day.
  14. I remember reading somewhere that leaving a stand is not allowed on public land, however I think you can leave it 1 night as long as it is labelled. I'd love to hear what you find out to be clear, I cannot find where I read that now. I come across permanent and all season portable stands on public land all the time however. Very frustrating especially when I am lugging in my 35 pounder everytime to obey the law.
  15. haha i didn't even know who this person was until now... damn quiz I want Al Gore back! I believe Romney can get the economy sorted out with his wealth of knowledge in business, however, it will be at the expense of our health. More water and air contamination. Business does not care about 100 years from now, they care about now, money talks.
  16. Yes, there is a computer glitch, happened to the guy ahead of me. However, I made the mistake of not buying Super sportsman, and then realized I was missing the extra Bow/MZ tag, so purchased seperately and got it on the spot. (I payed more damnit) The glitch is when you buy Super Sportsman. The clerk said to call this number and let them know and they should mail it to you: DEC 518 402 8843
  17. Nevermind!!! I missed reading this: Bowhunting OR Muzzleloading seasons only (including the regular season in Westchester County and any season in Suffolk County), corresponding to the privileges purchased,
  18. Hey, So I am really confused about the Muzzleloader tag I got today after reading the Hunting Guide. It says Bow/Mz Antlerless only, which to me means I can use this tag for Bow season. However, after reading the guide under Muzzleloading permit, it does not state that. Anyone know whether or not that Bow/MZ Antlerless tag is good for bow season as well? Thanks in advance
  19. Found it! http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/84000.html
  20. I have a Simmons Vertical Rangefinder, and while pretty good at getting the distance, I found a couple of times that I did not have the time to pull it out and use it. I was going to give this mechanical rangefinder a try this season, its only $19.99 and bolts to your bow. Once sighted, you just either aim the bow at the deer or full draw and put a pin on the belly, and the pin that connects with the top of the deer will be your range. Sounds easy enough. Anyone use it and thoughts? Link http://www.deadonrangefinder.com/ Just found another type: http://www.badriveroutdoors.com/ I can think of two occasions last year where I might have gotten a deer instead of passing/missing had I used one of these.
  21. Does it vary by location in NY State? Where can I check out license purchase dates?
  22. I never got the opportunity to see or hear fighting in my life. Mostly due to a bad buck/doe ratio im sure. However, I can't help but wonder if I did all my post season and pre season and summer scouting, put in long hours hunting as usual, and call in a buck and somehow another one comes in as well and they start fighting around me and I got my bow, i dont know guys.... i mean I did hunt and call them in. I'd probably shoot one. Now if I am walking miles into the Adirondacks, and happen to come across two bucks fighting, after never seeing a buck in 3 years... again... guess I would have to consider it in the moment. Not like I'm walking around managed property with feeders in Texas It would depend on the situation and moment for me.
  23. Holy crapola! Where the heck do you guys live with these Iowa bucks!
  24. I looked into it as well but not diggin it too much Here is a good review on how to use it and how it spins around.
