  1. As much as I love the video, and the theories and tips, man its not really applying much around my hill country. One clue as to why is the number of deer in Wisconsin where they filmed it. One scene shows a farm field with 6-7 big bucks ( and thats just bucks, others show 30+ doe) running into the woods. I showed my dad the video who has hunted the same Catskill Hills for 30+ years. He wanted me to throw that video in the fireplace lol. Back to hill country tomorrow. Good luck to everyone this weekend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  2. Do you not realize that the deer population varies greatly depending on what part of the state and terrain you hunt? Maybe you should start hunting public lands in the Catskills and Adirondacks for a few years and then decide on whether or not the entire state should have the same AR in place. Be warned you might have to revert to hunting like a 12 year old to get some meat. You also need to understand that although media and current hunting shows are all about trophy hunting mature bucks, which is fine, its not how everyone hunts. Not everyone has the time or resources to put into hunting a mature buck. And as you know, not everyone hunts in farms where you can just go out and shoot a Doe if you want meat. Some of us have only really tough low density and pressured places to hunt. Farm rules do not apply. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  3. The old fashioned way. Quartering it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  4. Dark to Dark, state land, didnt even see a squirrel. Pushed one deer while moving around midday. Bedded. One deer on the entire mountain it seemed! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  5. This was my opening day a couple years back. Same exact scenario. Firing off shots midday and riding quads all over. I now hike up the mountain and leave the bottom for them. State land really is quieter sometimes. Go in deep, no quads allowed, and the likes of those party guys wont be seen that deep. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  6. Oaks are hard to find up there. Which wilderness areas do you hunt? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  7. I wash my clothing with dead down wind detergent. I start washing myself with the dead soap 2 weeks before season and all during. I spray down and keep clothes in bag ect. Last weekend i decided to ground hunt, expecting a particular buck to come through some trails with wind in my favor as ive seen him do before. That morning he decides to come up behind me. Im sitting on the ground ducked against a stone wall, hiding well. He sniffed me out before i head him and was gone. Finally realized what everyone always says. Playing the wind is most important. Sure doing all that cleaning might help but at least i learned it wont fool them now. That bastard. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  8. Ah, this sub forum will be my new home. Bow or rifle up there? Rifle is hard enough, bow is damn hard. Depending on where you go in the park of course. Ive bow hunted last 3 years on moose river. Big mistake. Still had a great time. Only deer I had an opportunity on in those 3 years was a button buck, but wasn't looking for that up there. If Bow, you really want to locate funnels but in the public lands up there, at least ones ive been to, its hard to find really good ones. Remember deer populations are low up there with miles and miles of woods for them to travel through. Probably the reason most successful hunters up there use the rifle and tracking in snow helps. If Rifle, best to still hunt up there. Look at both google and Bing maps. They show different seasons it seems. Never thought of looking for oaks if the map took the season right. Gonna have to check that out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  9. Damn mountain bucks. I know them all too well. I also climb up far from the cabin to hunt, dark to dark. Last year, I get back to the cabin and my dad says a big buck came out to the field 60 yards from the house. He was just sitting inside watching it. Pisses me off! 10. I got one hanging around in the catskills also. I know because i found about 9 piles of crap in a 10x10 square foot area under beech trees. Top of the mountain, hard hike in. I camped out an afternoon but it could be miles away who knows. Wish i lived there to focus on the area but my limited time forces me to get a deer which 4 weekends in is still blank. 11. See man, nothing to be down about. That's more deer than ive seen in 2 years lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

  13. Just out of curiosity, how long have you been hunting in your life. Not sure if you just started or been at it for years but its never the same every year. Like others said, just enjoy and have fun. Don't let there be pressure. I found myself guilty of this and took this weekend off to relax. We wait all year for this, dont let pressure of wanting to get something right away cause others have spoil your enjoyment of hunting. Hunting is seperate from killing. It will happen when it happens, and if not, oh well as least you'll have a great time regardless. Not everybody gets a deer with bow every single year, but don't let that ruin it for you. 14. We need a lawyer to interpret all these regulations lol.
  15. http://www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4081.html#13002 Maybe the regulation changed or I never read it correctly, but it looks like not to exceed 30 days? w. No person shall erect, construct, install, maintain, store, discard or abandon any structure or any other property on State lands or subsequently use such structure or property on State lands, except if the structure or property is authorized by the department or is: 1. a geocache that is labeled with the owner's name and address and installed in a manner that does not disturb the natural conditions of the site or injure a tree; 2. a camping structure or equipment that is placed and used legally pursuant to this Part; 3. a legally placed trap or appurtenance that is placed and used during trapping season; 4. a tree stand or hunting blind that does not injure a tree, is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number, and is placed and used during big game season, migratory game bird season, or turkey season; or 5. a wildlife viewing blind or stand that is placed for a duration not to exceed thirty (30) days in one location per calendar year, does not injure a tree, and is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number. x. On State lands, no person shall erect, construct, occupy or maintain any structure that is affixed to a tree by nails, screws or other means that injure or damage the tree except as otherwise authorized by the department. y. No person shall erect, construct, maintain, occupy or use any tree stand that is used, operated, accessed or reached by methods or means which injure or damage a tree on State lands, and no person shall gain access to any structure in a tree on State lands by means that injure or damage the tree.
  16. I am looking for the regulation on setting up stands no public land but can't find it. Anyone got a link to it on the dec site? I'll keep looking in the meantime. I remember reading somewhere that you could setup a stand for the season or for a number of days, something like that. I never leave a stand over the course of a week, but have left it overnight if I plan on hunting early the next morning in the same spot and I'm a long hike from the road. However if I did leave one over the course of time assuming it is legal, I would leave a note in plastic stating when I plan on being back to hunt it first thing dark, and even welcome anyone that finds it to hunt it any other time. It's all about respect. I also think that you need to leave your name or tag number on it. Man I need to find that info again. I've found plenty of setups on public land but never got on one myself.
  17. Oh and there is no logging on public land or the park in general. Correct me if I am wrong. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  18. I haven't been up there for rifle, only bow. Guys like the Salerno bros who are infamous for getting deer on public lands have a certain strategy to do so. They wait for fresh snow to hit the ground and then track track track. Of course they live there so its easier to wait for snow rather than planning a trip for it. If there is snow when you are there I would try that. Just don't get lost. Deer densities are the lowest in the state and at least where I went, beech trees were not all over. Forget about Oaks. There is so much woods for deer to be and move. At least during rifle there will be more people pushing. Good luck and report back! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

  21. I have not seen a damn deer in 5 all day sits, different areas, fresh sign, etc... I do love my new lone wolf climber though! Just don't think it was meant to sit so many hours not watching deer. It was more meant to be up in Wisconsin hunting 160+ inch bucks. Send me a deer, any deer, just 1 please! I have jumped a couple here and there walking. I might just wait for some colder weather before I burn myself out.
  22. I agree with using those fleece hand warmers instead of gloves. I've tried all kinds of gloves and no matter what they still freeze in 0-25 degrees. I can hunt without gloves using this type and if it gets cold at all I always keep a 99 cent hand warmer in the pocket to throw in there. I never waste money on gloves anymore.
  23. That is just hilarious!!! LMAO Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
  24. Very cool! I wish I could get a DEC Bear patch every year also! I'm going to start this bowhunting log. Notice how they upgraded you from 5 to 10 years? First you were hunting a treestand, now you are on the ground in a ghillie suit! Are you sewing them into anything in particular?
  25. WoW! I never knew how much work it took. That dude absolutely shows how much pride and love he has for his job. I'll pay top dollar for someone like that any day. I envy him!
