Looking for a track driver rifle.. opinions??
erussell replied to apoallo's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
100 to 300 yrds is not really a long shot for any rifle. Most any bolt gun by the leading manufacturers can accomplish MOA out to 100 yrds and hold tight groups past that. Now the operators ability to do just that is another thing. -
It will be one of the most frustrating and exciting things you will ever do. But once you get the hang of it you might not ever get back in a tree. I have killed only a handfull of deer out of a tree with bow. Most have been on the ground. Though I will say with the exception of a few with gun, All my bigger bucks have fallen while sitting in a tree.

Ive lived in Doom county my whole life and ive never seen a Rattler. Where up Penn did you see it? I use to kill timber rattlers down south for there rattle's when I was in the Army. And I always say Vestal which is as far away as you can get from any of my spots.

Satelites!!! that takes me back!!! I loved those things. With those cheap carbon black blades that would snap off in flight Those were the good old days. Them and the Savora heads were awesome for the time.

Went to dicks the other day and there were 10 muslim guys in there getting paint guns and Co2 refills? I asked the cashier what that was all about and he said, I dont know but I would stay away from the mall, theaters, or gov buildings looks like they are practicing for something.

Need an ID to buy ammo? What about the poor people who dont have ID's to vote? How are they going to buy ammo? I expect the ACLU and the Dems to be all over this demanding that people's 2nd ammendment rights not be denied!!!! Yeah right!!!! Funny how they like to pick which rights they think you should have!!

An interesting article on the complexities of long range shooting. Really brings it home on how well you need to know your equipment before taking these shots under Ideal situations. http://archerytalkblog.com/?p=3544

Not unless you count my fall restraint device. I was just in my hunting pants and longjohns long sleeve tee. I was trying to get to a tree stand and dont wear the gillie up in the stand.

Dont know why he's worried about big bird when he supports killing children before they can watch it anyhow! -
I started out shooting with my Dads Bear recurve back in the 80's. He had 4 fiberglass arrows that I used. Use to get fibers in my skin and they would hurt like crazy. Was glad to get some cheap aluminum arrow eventually. LOL. It had a rubber clamp on quiver with no cover just exposed heads. It was a real mans work bow!!! He wasnt paying attention one time and somehow flipped the bow around while crawling through some brush and lifted his leg up right into the old bear broadheads. Had to get a few stiches. LOL.

I would have to agree with the depends where you shot him. I find stomache is 6-8 hr's, intestins straight through a little longer but if you have an angle through alot of the intestins and into a leg then it may be shorter. Key is not to call in the national gaurd. I only allow one other person usually the one who shot it in with me while we track. One person looks at the ground while the other looks ahead with eyes and binos if need be. Slow and quiet no crashing around in a panic, keep your head. Have always found the deer, it just takes some time and a clothes pin for the nose once you find them. Gut shots blow up like a ballon after they die and stink to high heaven!!!
-
If he hit him high in the shoulders and he didnt find him I bet he's still alive. would nt be the first shoulder shot deer to survive. My uncle shot one of the unluckiest bucks around a few yrs ago that had two healed over broadheads in his shoulder.

Alright I'll admit they were crap. Shot A doe Saturday and the blades and tip were missing afterward. Threw the remainder out and went to walmart and got muzzy 100s. Nice thing is I fully expected to have to retune and adjust my bow but they shot same as the othe broadheads. Nice!!!! Cost me twice as much having to spend money on two different sets of broadheads, next time ill just stick with the muzzys !!

Not to hijack this thread but just curious as to how you would pull a cross bow back and hold it up to shoot if you cant pull a bow back. Just curious.

So I went out Saturday morning in the freezing cold. I fully intended on getting in a stand up on the mountain in a stand of oak's. But about 200 yrds from my stand I ran into a group of doe in another stand of oaks that busted out in all directions making all sorts of noise. I stood there contemplating wether or not to just give up and go home as the wind was in the wrong direction to hunt this stand. Instead I went back to the main trail and dropped all unneccesary equipment and stripped off my jacket and sweater and just went with the t-shirt and longjohns. And started a slow stalk up the opposite side of the mountain. It didnt take long to run into some deer wandering around under another oak tree. I tried a few doe and fawn bleats which got there attention but none ever presented me with a shot and then they moved on. About 20 min later I caught more movement and saw a doe feeding along a trail. I hid in some small trees and grass and waited till she walked by about 25 yrds away and sealed the deal with an arrow thru the lungs. Spent the day cutting her up and havent gone back out yet. But have a freezer full of meat.

I just want to pass on that this book has been a great help to me. The information inside is dead on and I think alot of experianced hunters would agree with what is written. I would suggest this book to all. Covers all aspects of tracking a deer from hair color and size to hit locations and wait times from each wound. http://books.google.com/books?id=jXKJpG4IgQwC&pg=PA160&lpg=PA160&dq=waiting+times+before+tracking+wounded+deer&source=bl&ots=2uAvfZU3Po&sig=fjIFWN0x-1IOsXF7FLGybCLP6bo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Be53UN7KDIyt0AG7oYGQDA&ved=0CFMQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q=waiting%20times%20before%20tracking%20wounded%20deer&f=false

Dang I didnt know it snowed in Africa? -
Actually if you are not employing at least 3 of the 4 afore mentioned stand impliments you are selling your self short. All stands have there time and place and none should be shunned as being better or worse than the others. I have hanging stands out, I have trees cleared out for a climber. I have ground blinds made out of brush in several spots and bring clippers with me to make ground blinds on the fly. Pre rut I like to stalk around to different feeding areas. It just depends on whats going on in the woods. Ive even glassed deer in the distance and got out of the stand and went and stalked and shot them. I would think it would be pretty boring doing the same thing over and over again.

A marginal shot is a marginal shot no matter what broadhead you are using. If its a shot through the guts no amount of 40$ for three rage broadheads are going to fix that.
