  1. looking at that whole BB gun thing made me think of paintball guns, same thing technically, no? so I found a local paintball place and checked their age restrictions.....they allow 10 and up, just find that interesting and threw it out there for no particular reason...

  2. Actually used a dry rub. Kosher salt, Coarse black pepper, sage and instacure 1. Let it cure for 7 days in the fridge then washed it down and stuck it back in the fridge for a night. Fired up the smoker and their it is... You can tell a dry rub bacon because it doesn't splatter when you fry it. Instead of putting moisture in you take it out..

do you have approximate measurements for making the rub, and how about smoke time and temperature? just getting into the smoker thing and can use all the help I can get.

  3. FWIW, also see "PL § 265.20 Exemptions." This allows for ages 12-15 to use rifles/shotguns/airguns and ages 14-15 to use pistols when supervised.

And while I am at it... the "three second rule" at stop signs is urban legend. You are only required to "stop." There is no time requirement in the law.

I know, but assumed we were talking about unsupervised kids.........and this really isn't about stop signs or kids shooting BB guns anyway.

  4. I know this will get ripped apart, but here it goes anyway, forget about what you did as a kid and what you do as an adult for a few minutes......teaching your child how to illegally take a deer by going beyond just allowing him to pull the trigger (probably had a good lesson on how to lie thrown in there as well), is probably setting him up for a lifetime of more of the same, and is much different then allowing a child to target shoot with a BB gun unsupervised, if the parent feels they are ready to do it,.....it's more of setting an example for our children then anything else, kids watch adults and usually follow the path they were led down.

  5. I don't believe anyone has "praised" lawbreakers, but an opportunity to expose how DISTURBING the law is!

Whats disturbing to me is I take my sweet 10 year old daughter to Pennsylvania and she LEGALLY kills a LEGAL deer and then I tell her iF she even thinks about doing it in NYS then its it's probably jail time for both her and me  :sorry:

and you can probably marry a first cousin in Alabama....what's you're point?

  6. Well now I have to admitt ignorance to this WNYBH...for teaching a child to shoot at a TARGET and not an animal with say a shotgun/ bow as I did with my children  BEFORE getting them to their safety course so they could show proficiencey when the instructor asked for them to shoot...Which by the way did not happen. But they were asked as a group who had knowlege of handling and shooting a gun/bow. I would think that having such knowlege before having the legal ability to shoot a live animal would make sense to the State.

There is a huge difference between what you have pointed out and the blatant disregard for the hunting laws and then celebrating the breaking of the law. Not a challenge here just a request...where is that in print  so I and others can review it.

I assume this is what you were asking for?

S 265.05 Unlawful possession of weapons by persons under sixteen.

It shall be unlawful for any person under the age of sixteen to

possess any air-gun, spring-gun or other instrument or weapon in which

the propelling force is a spring or air, or any gun or any instrument or

weapon in or upon which any loaded or blank cartridges may be used, or

any loaded or blank cartridges or ammunition therefor, or any dangerous

knife; provided that the possession of rifle or shotgun or ammunition

therefor by the holder of a hunting license or permit issued pursuant to

article eleven of the environmental conservation law and used in

accordance with said law shall not be governed by this section.

A person who violates the provisions of this section shall be

    adjudged a juvenile delinquent.

  7. Last time I checked you could take a combo course that covered bow and hunting and prep work was online. Condensed class. This was a few years ago so maybe it's changed. Rob seems pretty angry all the time. I feel for him.

I'm pretty sure it's like you said, and only offered like that in select areas......yeah, all that time spent drawing cartoons can really wear on a man.

  8. Interesting. I think it would open up land. As much as people want to make an argument that antlers have little or nothing to do with hunting, I just cannot see where doe only hunting would carry the same degree of participation or level of involvement. I think it would open alot of land up. I dont see people leasing, or trying to lockdown land for doe hunting.

I think more owners would want deer shot because they become much more problematic than they are now in higj dpsm areas because we as a resource cant control the population with reduced participation.

    woo hoo!!

  9. when I started this thread I honestly thought I would get responses speaking out against the said violator, that really backfired...which is pretty surprising after hearing all the complaints about people using other's tags, hunting without licenses..etc..,oh well. Oh, and I apologize for using the word "disturbing" that was a bit dramatic, but I really thought this thread was gonna go the other way.

  10. Ok so breaking some laws are ok and not disturbing? just trying to see this ever moving line of demarcation.

the breaking of the laws is not disturbing at all.....we all know it goes on and apparently is quite acceptable...........what I found odd, is the outcry from the 'villagers" backing this when usually people are totally disgusted by anyone who uses another's tag on a buck they didn't kill, because we all know how sacred an animal that is. The fact that the Father, who is of an obvious superior intelligence, had the ingenious idea to put it on social media and fact that he further embarrassed himself by making ridiculous statements defending it are only an added bonus.

  11. Heh, your household must be full of glass because no mistakes can be made because its far out there.

Thank God my parents were willing to use parental judgement to break the law to let me grow/experience life.

I agree with you on the circus he made out of it.

The premise however, that breaking the law at deemed appropriate times, is as far out there as can be is flawed. I do think the coverup was lame...Most people probably support the act of the kid hunting/shooting, but not the cover-up.

Thinking back on the laws my parents broke (sorry mom and dad):

    • fireworks
    • letting me drive around the school parking lot and back roads at 14/15
    • Letting me sip a beer at special occassions as I neared adulthood
    • Shooting the squirrels before I had my hunter's ed course (ha Culver...)
    • Participating in deer drives in similar fashion (ha again)
    • I'm sure I forgot some.

That reckless abandonment of the law. No wonder I grew up to be a mass murderer. Isn't that how it works? Small deviant behavior? Good grief.

and I'm willing to bet that everything you mentioned was carried out under the watchful eye of intelligent parents like probably 98% of us....... I don't remember my parents ever putting my shady "accomplishments" out for the entire State to read about. Those moral/ethical things you mentioned earlier are situations you're put into, you don't wake up in the morning and plan on having to make those calls.......that's a lot different than intentionally setting out to break two or three different laws, or maybe not in your book.

  12. and the fact that the Father let the kid pull the trigger is the least of the things I found to be "disturbingly" funny..............the getting of the Aunt's tag to use (we all know how pissed off many guys get about that), the putting it on Facebook and the Town rallying around them (what else goes on around there) really are what stands out.

  13. I had read the article . I thought it was odd that people would support the illegal activity . Nothing like teaching a kid how to poach . And...... for the dumb ass to mention this on FaceBook . Brain Scan !

yeah, I don't get it, do some find it "OK" because a child is involved? if the father killed that same deer illegally and got a family members tag to put on it, would these same people think it's "OK"? I bet not.......

  14. Was this guy from Long Island? I read a post during gun season on FB that this guy let his 5 or 6 year old pull the trigger on a deer. When I read it I couldn't believe he posted the story.

and I bet this is the first time they ever put another family members tag on a deer that wasn't killed by them.....just another one of those ethical/moral diversions, nothing to be concerned about.

  15. Disturbing? I don't find it disturbing. Do I agree with the actions? Not at all. I do think his commentary sucks.

What I see is an ethical/moral diversion from the law based on their belief system. Does it make it OK? No, but its also not disturbing. I find the terrorist attacks in Paris disturbing (which ironically is a diversion on law, too, based on their belief system). I find the father in florida who threw his girl over a bridge disturbing.

I find this to be filed in the same category as crossing a property line at 2:00 a.m. to retrieve a deer you shot because the landowner has denied permission to retrieve after you've exhausted efforts pre and post hunt. I find this to be similar to shooting a deer hit by a car that is suffering and choosing to not wait for the authorities. Against the law? Yes. Disturbing? No.

NY's hunting age regs suck. This is someone acting out against it.

I find anytime a child is told it's ok to do something illegal and then if you get caught to blame everyone else, to be pretty far out there as far as right and wrong go........and good move by Dad putting it out there on facebook, probably the smartest move of all.  I find it hard to believe that anyone who would make those moral/ethical /legal decisions that you mentioned, would choose to involve their kids in it. I wonder what the Dad said to the kid right before they got caught? probably either "watch this" or "hold my beer".

  16. did anyone else read the article where a Father allowed his son to illegally kill a buck before he was old enough? The buck was also illegally tagged by a relative........the Crooks actually were supported by people who raised money to help pay for the fines the family was given for this act....The father was later quoted as saying this was the result of "jealous people" and " They will never take away our memories and the proudest day of my life"..........unbelievable to say the least.

  17. The biggest thing is make sure the boots are big enough to allow a little space between the sock and your boot.

absolutely.....I normally wear size 11, this year I grabbed a pair of 13's that allowed extra socks and those stick on chemical foot warmers and still had some air space inside.......nice and warm.
