  1. You do realize that them seeking your input is the same as him going online or talking to biologists, etc. on their own, There's no difference to them talking to you or researching on their own - they're both situations where influence is being sought. All bias inputs are the same - thus you are only working with one variable, which is certainly accounted for.

I don't think seeking my advice can be compared to a biologist or a semi thought out online study, but I appreciate the thought....I don't doubt anything you're saying. I just was a little surprised when I heard from these guys....my first thought was "I hope these aren't the type of hunters who are going to be the majority voice", followed by the thought of telling them to do some research on their own...what happened is I just told them what they should be for and against........I'm sure I'm not alone in being a little frustrated for not getting to participate in the survey, but it is what it is.

  2. I don't see a problem with that. Casual hunters are just that, and they have as much a say as I do being a serious hunter. If anything, you should feel better. dbhunter just countered that saying one in his circle got it, and I have to assume that's a serious hunter circle...or you just want to complain and think you know better than Cornell University. Get over it already, the sample process is scientifically sound and accepted within the community of professionals that are responsible for these tasks.

apparently you missed the point.........those two casual hunters asked me for my input on certain topics, so they were influenced by an outside source and answered in a way they may not have had they taken time to research on their own.......but I'm sure that's an isolated incident. I'm aware that they more than likely take into account that many surveys won't get returned and that some "cheating" may go on.

  3. last night i had a deer biologist confirm to me that going to (1) buck WON'T work well enough to be biologically sound.  also i think that'd just aggravate hunters by eliminating opportunity regardless of what's in front of you.

much like the aggravation of having to hunt under the current mandatory AR's that were imposed in some areas...........

  4. TY Dave, I will check them out and good luck on your moose hunt.

I would look and see what area allows baiting earlier...not sure there is any difference in the regs, but that is a pretty important aspect of hunting over bait. It's pretty important that you go somewhere that they start baiting as early as possible and maintain them. There will be places that don't start as early as they should.

  5. i think the 7000 that were sent out are sent out.  if you haven't gotten it you probably won't.

I was just curious if anyone on here got one, I know two guys, neither serious deer hunters, so they asked me to help fill them out, obviously you can see the problem with that.........shows how flawed the system is when they only select a few out of all the hunters in NY.

  6. Venison is very important to our family.  This past season, for the first time ever, I was able to do a real "apples to apples" comparison of 1/2, 1-1/2, 2-1/2, and 4-1/2+ buck venison.   The button was struck by a car at the end of our driveway and I finished it with a knife.  The 1-1/2 was my x-bow kill, the 2-1/2 was a "gift" from a friend during archery season, and the 4-1/2 + was my rifle kill.    All, except the button died on their feet from the shot, or within seconds from massive heart/lung damage.   The button probably lingered 5 minutes before I was able to end his suffering.    I personally consumed the tenderloins from each, 3-4 days after the kills, all cooked the same (rare the way I like them) in a frying pan on the stove in olive oil.  The button was about 50 lbs dressed, the 1-1/2 160 lb, the 2-1/2 200 lb, and the 4-1/2 + 225 lbs.  The 3 younger bucks were all killed in a southern, Ag region of the state and the stomachs were all filled with corn.  The old buck was taken in the NW Adirondacks and its stomach was loaded with white-oak acorns, mostly un-chewed due to well-worn teeth I suppose.

The results of the "taste test" of the tenderloins were:  1) The drawn-out "road-kill" fawn was best by a wide margin, pretty much about the most tender, best tasting tenderloins I ever had.   2) Very little if any noticeable difference between the 1-1/2 and the 2-1/2.  Due to the larger size I would definitely pass a 1-1/2 if I knew I would get a crack at a 2-1/2.  Most years lately, I get them "cracks", so antler restrictions wouldn't hurt me too bad. To me, as a full blooded "meat hunter", a 2-1/2 year old buck is as good as it gets when you combine quantity of meat and quality. 3) The tenderloins from the old buck were definitely a bit "chewier", but still tasted good.   Quantity of meat was only marginally more than the 2-1/2.

The loss in meat "quality" with the old buck certainly had nothing to do with method of death, hanging temp, or cooking method as all 3 mature bucks were similar.   The diet is a bit of an unknown however, as there is no corn within many miles of where that old buck lived.   With a 3-point min per side AR, we would be eating the same as we are today (the 1-1/2 was a 6), but I would still vote against the AR's if I could.  I want my freedom to apply my own AR's depending on where we are in the seasons and with the freezer.   I have gone many seasons with no bucks and full freezers due to liberal doe tags.  This is the first I remember where we were full with no does.   I do prefer butchering bucks, due to less fat to trim on average, and the bucks taste just as good within each age class.

I just say a prayer before I cook the meat and "The Man Upstairs" makes it come out perfect......you only get good tasting venison if he wants it to happen.

  7. If the poor taste and quality of an older buck is being used as justification to take a younger buck, then it would seem to be on topic. Aside from it being the choice of the hunter to take a 1.5 year old buck the rest is BS.  Which I am OK with by the way, but the excuses to justify it other than "I choose to" are BS.

I stand by my statement that the quality of the venison is not age dependent. it is meat care and cooking. Any of you guys shoot a big ole buck you don't want the venison from. Just give me a holler.

haha, that's probably the most annoying statement that guys make after shooting something that they feel guilty about shooting or are embarrassed to have shot.......the last thing that ever enters my mind before I shoot a deer that I want to kill is what it may taste like. I'm pretty sure that any deer I take, that dies and is recovered quickly and is properly cared for is going to taste just fine regardless of age.

  8. My point is that there are a lot of comments when we talk about ARs that trophy hunters are tying the sport and are really bad people. Just read this thread. Yet I don't see any of the trophy hunters putting down the best hunters. It's the pot calling the kettle black. That is what is whack.

well, look at it this way...nobody is telling the "selective hunters" what to shoot, by law or otherwise......on the other hand, the "non selective hunters" are being told what they can shoot.....so it's only natural that one group may be more annoyed than another.right?....or maybe DEC will enact an "my wife just had a baby so I don't have enough time to trophy hunt so I need to lower my standards for this year, but normally I would never shoot a buck of this size clause" to the AR laws..........

  9. Not true... I'd get into why but it's a long answer... and in the scheme of things won't mean much to anyone anyways... nor would most even care... so I'll just say it doesn't work that way.

well, I'm sure you'll tell me I'm wrong, but if the majority of bucks are killed opening weekend, and you now remove the ability for people to kill the yearlings during that period, how could it not have some type of impact on yearling bucks surviving another year?.......and in the scheme of things, AR's mean nothing to me nor do I care, but don't want you to "burst my bubble" again...so don't get into it...again.

  10. when it comes to wood, it's just like striped clothing, horizontal stripes give a shorter fatter appearance and vertical stripes give a taller thinner appearance...........I'd vote for vertical any day of the week...and a white ceiling.

  11. another thought if you're going to entirely gut the room, install 1/2" plywood behind the sheetrock....guys with extensive mounts go this route so they can hang mounts anywhere without looking for studs or installing anchors, so far this hasn't been a problem for me........

  12. Westchester.

I do like the wood look but is it a pain to install over walls?

not really, I've glued it on in the past and it was pretty simple....only problem is if you go that route and get tired of it you can't take it off without ruining the sheetrock.....and the color I like is beige/light tan, not bash...and like I mentioned, too much of something is a bit much, that's why I don't like the wood ceiling walls and floor....makes it feel too closed in....and lighting is very important as far as I'm concerned, too much wood doesn't reflect it very well from what I've seen.

  13. Been house hunting lately and although nothing bought yet, been thinking about my trophy room to be. What is the ideal wall color? Most likely, I will be taking an extra bedroom say 12x12. Is a neutral tan the best/safest bet? All 4 walls the same color? Thanks in advance.

that's a question you should ask the future wife, might as well get used to her making the final decisions....I always like the natural pin wainscoting with a bash paint on the top half..........where you looking for houses?

  14. That was a good flick, personally I didn't like "the moral discussion" about the boy that got them in trouble in the first place but hey, Hollywood need some drama on the screen....

read the book, if you want to doubt the guy who was there that's up to you........but I'm sure you were in a similar situation at some point.

  15. Just watched "Lone Survivor" on DVD . There was some brutal action in that movie . Those Seals are some tough SOB's .

you should read the book, and watch some interviews with Marcus Lutrell that are on youtube......pretty eye opening and heartbreaking if you hear some of the things he says.....Michael Murphy graduated a few years ahead of my daughter from the same school....my son did something as a tribute to him without our knowledge until they sent a letter home about it...probably the proudest day of my life so far.

  16. Oh, for some reason I thought you were from this neck of the woods......??  Sounds like you guys had a great day, going to shoot some clay birds tomorrow?!?!  I would be.............................. :)

I bet you made that dealers day, cool.

yeah, he seemed pretty happy.....I would have been surprised if he didn't offer a deal, probably going out for some real birds in the next day or so...let you know how it goes, and thanks for the input.
