  1. all parts are original and have matching #'s, the stamp on the receiver appears to be a wings on what I can best describe as being on a globe  with CE stamped right below, on the barrel right after the receiver is stamped "fxo aw" if that helps and it still has the rear elevation sights on it.....I also have an Oberrndorf which was rebarreled for 30-06...by me, which I now know was a big mistake.

  2. they should go back to when you bought your regular season tag that was good for archery and regular season...it was either sex during archery and if you were successful you could buy another tag for the regular season that was buck only as it is now and turned back into an either sex tag during late bow / muzzleloader season, and doe tags were pretty much on an area based need.......

  3. A headspace issue in this case probably wouldn't be caused by the barrel/receiver, but it certainly could be caused by a bolt that was manufactured in a different batch from the rest of the gun. Those things were being cranked out in huge numbers and the specs among different batches weren't always entirely compatible with each other.

The deformation at the case mouth could be as simple as corrosion/rust that ate away at the chamber and was cleaned out years later by someone looking to sell the gun.

A few simple tests will probably determine what's wrong. Sounds like a nice winter project.

thanks, think I'm going to work on resurrecting it and start shooting it again....btw all the #'s match and everything looks clean as far as rust and corrosion go.

  4. look at what NYC is doing, they are buying up private land at an alarming rate and opening it to the public....there's a lot of unhappy people because of this, the Real Estate people are pissed because now that land is forever off the market and many of the local residents are pissed because this previously unhunted land, that may or may not have been their private sanctuary's now has others hunting it....so as much as big money may be securing big parcels of land, public entities are doing the same.

  5. I know there must be many issues that could cause what I'm talking about.....but for you guys with the knowledge, is it unreasonable to suggest a gun with the original barrel could have issues with the headspacing that could possibly create the problems I mentioned? if so, I'd rather find a good gunsmith and have it checked out to avoid any potentially damaging or dangerous situations.

  6. By "out of shape", what do you mean?  If it was bulged or belled, it could indicate severe throat errosion. That isn't a headspace issue or particularly dangeraous but it would result in dismal accuracy.

Remington or Winchester 8X57 ammo is pretty bad stuff as far as power & spec anyway. Hard to make an accurate accessment.

was just a little out of round where the opening of the neck is......and what appeared to be the brass / metallic dust, I'm not a reloader or gun fanatic so maybe my findings and the info that I got was not of any real concern? but, for you guys who are, is this a real possibility of something that could happen?

  7. Mausers are no different than any bolt action (that utilizes "rimless" cartridges) when it comes to headspace. The distance from the bolt face and the shoulder determines headspace.  W/"rimmed" or "belted" cartridges, the rim or belt is the headpace locator. One can also resize these types of fired cases so the shoulder (if present) will headspace.

Inspecting the fired case could give some indications of excess headspace. A severely flattened primer W/factory loads would indicate that the primer was pushed out of the case head @ the intial ignition pressure W/the case then slamming back against the bolt face causing the primer to be flattened into the radius around the pocket.

The only way to check accurately is to use headspace gauges. I have 8X57 "GO" & "NO GO" headspace gauges. It takes less than a minute to check.

    Where are you located jjb4900?

I'm very far away from you, L.I......I only brought this up because I saw a chance to get an answer as to what I was told was possible or not, and this is what I was told could be the issue, who knows if the guy even knew what he was talking about.....If I remember correctly I was just using Remington factory ammo..no primer issues, only a real fine brass looking dust around the the back of the chamber where the brass sits when fully seated and the neck of the case would look out of shape....I'm 100% sure this is the original military barrel that was never messed with, haven't shot it in many years, but saw the chance for some possible answers so figured I'd ask.

  8. Have no idea Lawdwaz the head space is set up when the rifle is built or a new bbl. is set up on the rifle. Sounds as if some people just like to BS.

yes, I just made it up for conversation sake...thanks for your useless input.

  9. My Mauser experience is limited to one gun that was custom built around the action from a 98, so I don't have any insight here.

May I ask who told you there might be headspace issues?

it's been awhile, but I believe it was a gunshop I brought it to when I noticed fine brass "dust" building up around the inside of the chamber and the brass looking a little out of shape after shooting.....never really looked any further into it after that as it wasn't one of my primary hunting rifles...they offered to have it sent out to have the headspace checked.

  10. I'll give them a suggestion to shore up their management plan. Spend the effort addressing the biggest hurdle in front of most hunters. Land access. dump the damned nuisance tags and find a way to assist hunters in getting in areas. Spread out some of the pressure and get the herd numbers in some of these high density WMU's under control.

that and bring the herds back up in the areas that are hurting.......once they get the herds in check they can worry about tweaking them.

  11. ok, I'm totally clueless about headspace and reloading to adjust for headspace issues....but, I have an older sportarized 98 Mauser that still has the original 8mm Barrel on it that I stopped using because I was told it may have headspace issues, this was based on the condition of the brass after it was shot...........anyone???

  12. What they want is an easy fix ... one that just won't work IMO...there is a lot to be said about driving ppl away when many ONLY have the week ends to hunt or are in compatition at work for days off in that 3 week period. If you want mature bucks then TEACH hunters what they look like...Can you tell a mature buck when it has 4 points to a side and is broad side by the rack?...No   Can you tell by the body shape?...Yes  Is there always a spot in your hunting area to give you a good view of rack width while maintaining a clear shot?...NO But if there is a clean shot presented can one tell by the body if the deer is mature?...Yes

They have put out there a rough draft that stirs the pot hoping to make sense out of the mess created...Bow hunters will come out of this stinking because gun hunters will see it as they aren't being touch...They aren't..Wow ARs in a season most...not all... but most practice AR's any ways...but then OBR...there goes the gun hunters...no more bow hunters needing to be in the woods chasing buck during gun...sure they can still use DMP but not all areas get those....who wins there? The Democrats that really don't like even hunting guns...fewer gun hunters and less time they get to hunt win win for them....How many out of staters are coming here? I'm not talking land owners or previous residents.Lets see.....several big buck states...most not nearly as anti gun nor gun regulated as NYS.. remember screw up here and you could loose your privileges in many other states as well..... Taxes , hotels, food are more expensive...So.... all things being equal buck size and #'s  Where would I book a hunt?...hhhmmm

What I want is for you to think about all of it...not just the rules them selves but the ripples from the rules. I stopped thinking that anything in the democratic NYS government machine doesn't have hidden agendas and trap doors attached...they do think long term...for they know we don't

you're first thought is spot on.........they want an easy fix and it can't be done by changing the regulations every few years when what they just implemented isn't working fast enough. Think back 10-15 years ago, were people pissed off with the deer hunting? I don't remember anyone fighting about the things they are now....it seems that some hunter's want everything now, big bucks, multiple bucks, numerous doe tags, longer or shorter seasons, a tag for every weapon...something has got to give at some point.

  13. which is human nature. We fear change. We don't know what will happen. Will hunting as we know it be ruined? idk... Will it improve? that'd be great but we have no guarantee.

Businesses struggle with change all the time. Change is scary. Kodak failed at it and Apple won at it.

The area we hunt upstate went to AR's three years ago (4W & 4R), I was beyond ticked at the time........3 years later and no improvement in the quality of the bucks we see, just at this point I don't care.....never was a trophy hunter, but was always thrilled to take any legal buck. I didn't even have the desire to fill my doe tags Upstate because the deer just aren't there, so I couldn't see killing one just to fill the tags......luckily (depending how you look at it) I live on L.I. and was able to fill 3 tags, just not the same to me as getting away and hunting Upstate.
  14. I have done some online survey conducting before, but never on this scale nor to a very select group, so my idea may be ignorant. I find myself wondering if offering the survey in an online format, in addition to mailed surveys, would be of any benefit (in the future-- obviously there is not enough time to offer it this go around). One might enter their unique hunting license number to gain access to the survey, to make sure that they are a valid hunter from NYS. This would weed out non-hunters or hunters without valid NYS licenses, as well as prevent people from taking the survey more than once to skew results.

This would open access to the survey in greater numbers, reduce mailing costs, and perhaps reduce the number of people that would not return the survey. I may be biased, though, because all of us here use the internet regularly (obviously, as we post to this forum). So it might be best used in conjunction with some mailed surveys.

Again, I might be barking up the wrong tree. I imagine (and hope) that the folks that conduct the survey have a better idea of what yeilds the most results.

I was thinking along those same lines, how hard could it really be to set up an online survey / questionnaire that requires you to log in using the same info used for online license sales and harvest reporting?

  15. Everyone wants to be loved. Me me me.

They see 7,000 and think there is no way possible to get an accurate gauge on the sentiment of the hunting community in NY. No way possible. Not at all. Never a chance.

I must surmise that these same people that feel this way know more about survey methodology, stats, and analytics than Cornell University's SRI. It's not like it's one of the leading institutes in the freaking world or anything. Nor does it have experts educated from other top world-ranking colleges...like Stanford, Beijng Normal, or University of Chicago...

People are literally whining about the brightest minds in the industry working on this. I just don't get it.

so since there are geniuses working on this, I shouldn't bother to send emails or make phone calls with my opinion on any of these matters because that would be considered being selfish and whiny? I've always been told not to complain if you did nothing to promote or fight an issue, guess I'll leave it to the professional's from this point on.

  16. I wonder what the numbers are regarding hunters that kill two bucks a year?

How about the hunters that kill no bucks?

On this site, how many guys or gals killed two bucks this year?

Is the killing of two bucks really a problem?  Show me.................

killing two bucks a year is no more of a problem than someone killing a little spike or 4pt.......

  17. Thanks for the list Doc.

Remember guys, this article was not written by the DEC, so wording is obligatory at this point. We will have to wait and see what the DEC actually puts out there. The way I look at it, this is the next round of the DEC's deer management program, as the current 5 year plan runs out in 2016. If you guys remember back a few years, they did this same thing, spitballed a bunch of ideas, sent surveys, got those back, had a public comment period with regional townhall style meetings, and then put their plan together. Some ideas were included, others were not.

I really wish they would conduct these surveys to all hunters, through a short questionnaire each year when you buy your license.

From that list, I would support 2,3,4. I dont see the point in carving up the state into more zone or units or whatever, there are already WMUs, Regions and zones, but thats not a huge deal. I highly doubt we will see ARs, and even though I might support it if done right, I dont see the shortening of the seasons happening either. Just my take on it.

I agree 100% about giving ALL hunters the opportunity to participate in the survey, sending out only 7000 questionnaires to randomly selected hunters, in no way guarantees they'd be getting a fair mixture of ideas..............I know everyone is welcome to attend the open meetings, but we all know that's not possible. I wrote several emails regarding my opposition to AR's prior to us getting them, but I never got any type of response in return, so who knows how much weight an outside response from a single person even has.

  18. attachicon.gif248.jpgMaybe that explains why the buck was struck thru the heart at 60 yards with a 300 fps, 135 lb draw x-bow.  He heard the release of the arrow and positioned himself so that he could check out with as little pain and suffering as possible.   One things certain however, that heart was delicious.  My wife pickled it and another for an appetizer at our new-years party this year.   I think my first guess was more on-target.  The venison goes where the man upstairs wants it to go.  Range, practice, poundage, speed, etc., are of secondary importance.   Good luck next season for all you folks whether you got any last year or not.

is that really how it works?

  19. In MS there are ARs. For most of the state it's 10" spread and 13" beam. For the Delta where they grow bigger deer it's 12". You adjust for the region. You will never get 100% of the deer, but you will get a large percentage of them.

To your second point, that's fair enough. It just seems that this site has a tendency to bash the trophy hunter and the meat hunter can do no wrong.

I can count points, but how the heck is anyone supposed to be able to accurately judge inches? obviously it's done, but gotta be tricky.

  20. I usually only put in enough chips to provide smoke for the first hour and a half or so. It will only go so deep regardless of how long the chips are in there. It only intensifies the amount in the outer layer. Sometimes making it too smokey. Trial and error.

I'm pretty sure what you said is exactly what happened....

  21. I think you are correct, sounds like too much smoke, too high of a temperature, cooked too long. I usually go 160 degrees with just a few wood chips. Also, I have to rotate the racks in my smoker after a few hours, the sausages closest to the heat source will be finished long before the sausage on the top racks if I don't.

ok, I did read that just because you don't see a lot of smoke doesn't mean that it's not smoking......maybe I should have listened.
