  1. Based on the pic gfdeputy2 posted and what I know of deer anatomy I'm confident I hit a lung. I had a limited window to shoot through and he was following a doe right out of it. I guess I should have waited though. This sucks. I really didn't think he'd get so far with a close range shout like that.

you would need to add the bone structure to that illustration to get an idea of how that shot angle could go bad.

  2. Oh no. Really? I thought that should hit the lung from that angle.

I'm gonna guess you hit shoulder......keep in mind that anything cut with a razor is gonna bleed like crazy in the beginning and probably eventually clot up if it's not fatal. If you ever gave yourself a good cut with a knife, think about how much it bled, if you just let it bleed and walked 500 yards, it would leave a good trail or if you stood in one spot it would leave a pretty good puddle.......we have 6 pints of blood, if you took one pint and dumped it out it would look like a crime scene, but it wouldn't kill you to lose that much....... But, I hope I'm wrong.

  3. If you are a ciggy smoker, and just can't go a few hours without a smoke, here's a tip so you don't have butts under your stand or in your blind.

Use an empty tylenol bottle, or anything like that, with a bit of water in the bottom. Doesn't take much space in your pack, and you can keep it in your jacket pocket. Put your butts in the bottle. It's air tight, so the smell wont get out. The worst smell from a ciggy is the butt.

For you cigar smokers...Can't help ya. This method might work, but I have no experience in putting a slimy phallic shaped thing in my mouth.

but you're obviously thinking about it...

  4. NY is known for hunting accidents. Some guy killed his hunting partner last year. A few years ago, 2 hunters shot Elk, I don't know what happened to them. A little kid was shot driving deer a few years ago.

I sometimes think hunting public land is better, because others should expect to see others.

actually, NY is low on the list of hunting accidents....

  5. For the record... the above is still true no matter how much of a law breaker any of us are... its not a "holier than thou" stance.. it's just he truth.

I agree 100%....maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think many have a problem with a hunter taking a few minutes of leeway with shooting hours....the problem lies with those who go out with the "screw the law" attitude and they're going to shoot as long as they can see.........after all, not all watches are exact, but they are or should be fairly close in keeping time.

  6. people push the boundaries of the law with hopes of not getting caught on a daily basis no matter what it may be, speeding, cell phone usage while driving, rolling through stop signs, trying to beat red lights, you name it...more lives have been changed forever by people breaking the vehicle and traffic law then all hunting violations combined. It's all the same, and for those who break all the other petty laws, but chastise another for doing the same on another, I say stop and take a look in the mirror before taking on a holier than thou attitude.

  7. what if you bring out a deer that has obviously been dead for a day and have it tagged for a day later? myself?, I don't start hunting another deer until the one I shot previously is recovered. I would go back looking for it with the weapon I shot it with and tag it for the day I shot and it obviously died.........I would think you would have problems if you brought out a stiff deer tagged for that day and it's obvious it died a day earlier and with a different weapon....

  8. Like anything else, Tickets can be written. Getting charged and getting convicted are two distinct things. In the end, you may win but considering the cost and aggravation I can't see it being worth it. But some people just can't seem to help themselves.

In many cases, if you get arrested for something, the arrest itself usually remains on your record......the outcome may not be what the original charge was for, but the arrest stays on your record nonetheless........some people will risk anything to get a deer, they ain't worth it as far as I'm concerned.

  9. I don't understand how anyone could feel comfortable hunting or going onto land that isn't public land or land that they don't have unquestionable permission to be on. Someone other than the property owner can be given the authority to enforce trespassing laws....

  10. there's a big difference between climbing into your stand with the intention of staying as late as possible and shooting a deer a minute after your watch says it's quitting time........unless there's a way for everyone to perfectly synchronize their watch with the big watch in DEC Headquarters it will never be an exact science.

  11. I guess we have several types of people.....those who pick and choose what laws to follow, those who really do follow all the laws, and those who break any law that stands in the way of them accomplishing their goals........

  12. if sunset is 6:40....is legal shooting over at the time my watch strikes 6:40 or the second before it strikes 6:41?..........that's a whole minute, so good to know.

  13. I liken it to the speed limit, the majority of us exceed the limit by a few mph, but are smart enough to not act recklessly and travel at dangerous speeds......unless someone is gonna tell us they NEVER speed or break any traffic laws.

  14. So then the regulation goes by the "predicted" sundown and pack it up even if you can still see fine.

This is exactly why I posted this.. As a gentleman I went with said "I stay until dark" which along with some other things he's said seem suspect

sunset is not a "prediction", it's an exact time for the zone you are in.....
