  1. yup got a thermacell.I was looking at the nice cushions at Bass Pro the other day but I didn't want to spend 50 bucks on one!!!

after I sat on a plywood seat for 8-10 hours a day for 6 days, I would have spent twice that on a good cushion had I known......we resorted to wrapping pillows in camo t-shirts after the first few days.........bugs weren't a problem at all when I went, but I'd rather have a thermacell and not need it then to not have one and need one.........and make sure you have warm weather camo, it can be hot.

  2. I heard field judging a bear the first time can be pretty tough. Do some research.

Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

when I went, the outfitter told us that if you've never seen a bear in the wild before, they will all look big.......nothing suffers from ground shrinkage more than a bear. I wasn't personally successful, but the average was 150 lbs., my brothers was the largest at 195 dressed and it looked huge on the ground.

  3. Bear with bait. I would love to do hounds but they don't start running the dogs til mid-September and I would never be able to take a week off from teaching. Still can't wait to go...my first guided hunt.

who are you hunting with? I went a bunch of years ago, best advice I can give is to bring a real comfortable cushion to sit on.

  4. if it's all private land, I would guess the property owners hold the cards.........you would have to get the majority of the people to agree to hunting, especially if the houses are close together.........I would also think it would take 4-5 years to see any impact with the birth control plan.

  5. I'd go crazy if I had to deal with preference points for DMPs. I have some pity for those that do and those that don't even get DMPs.

When I think of preference point, I think of Iowa. I've got 1 point, lol. 2015 can't come soon enough.

yeah, preference points were required in my area for about 3 or 4 years, so a dmp every other year was about normal..........add antler restrictions into that mix and you can guess the rest............it's why I devote more time to bow and muzzleloader season and rifle is just out of tradition at this point.

  6. If we assume that it is possible to vote out Sweeney, are you equally willing to vote out Mark Grisanti?

My next question is do you believe the chances are good that the person who replaces Sweeney in Long Island will be better in respect to hunting and/or second amendment rights?

My third question is Who will replace him as chair of the en-con committee? I am not familiar with how the committees are formed, nor how the chair person is selected, do you? I do know that one gentleman from downstate on the en-com committee didn't know what a muzzleloader was and had to ask seconds before voting. I will give him credit for at least asking when he doesn't know, which is probably better than some of those ego-maniacs...

good point. what if we have anti-gun, anti-hunting politicians running against someone who voted for the Safe Act, but has been a friend to sportsmen? a little more research needs to be done on each candidate before you cast your vote.

  7. It kind of makes you wonder why everybody was pinning their hopes on this gimmick then. It can't be taken both ways. If it is worth doing, then the potential for being a significant impediment to bow hunting exists. If it takes place and nobody even notices it, you have to wonder what was actually accomplished.

This year will be  a much better test because, as was pointed out, that thing last year was such an absolute mess (now you see it... now you don't .... oh there it is again ... quick, spread the word). It's hard to say just how many participants got "confused out of it" last year. Personally, as before, I believe it all much ado about nothing. I think it is pretty much a "window-dressing" approach to a serious problem that has its basis in hunters not taking on responsibilities of mentoring and encouraging new hunters. We have provided an opportunity to do what people have always had the opportunity to do (but didn't), patted ourselves on the back and walked away declaring .... "problem solved".

like I said before, if this is the only reason you get your kid out into the hunting world, you've already lost them.

  8. SO if you were in his district would you vote for him or against him if the election were tomorrow?

I would vote against him due to his vote on the Safe Act, that has more of an overall impact on all of us than his stance on crossbows...............while not a big fan of crossbows during archery, I'm fairly certain allowing them would have as much of a negative affect as the youth hunt will.

  9. Yes two totally different topics. The hunting one is secondary. if a rep is willing to step on the Constitution what makes you think that you can count on them for anything? You can support him because he has this one stance that is in line with you (And I guess there could be more or many more of his stances you agree with) But I believe that any Rep that voted Yay on that law should be opposed ant every turn. If NYB supports him becasue of his crossbow view and they are willing to turn their back on what he did, that speaks volumes about them and reinforces my view of them.

Personally I don not think any legislation should be stonewalled regardless if I agree with it or not. It should go to vote and then we get to hold our Reps accountable if they vote contrary to our views.

I'm not saying I agree with any of his agendas or that I support him.......I certainly think the stance on on infringing on the second amendment is more important than any other topic..........I was just saying they are totally different issues.

  10. I think most people's concern here relies on the "special" treatment and it's long-term impact on recruitment. Hard data is challenging to come by in this area and I don't think anyone is against getting kids involved. How best to do it is really the crux of the topic.

I do agree that if that's what it takes to get you and you're kid involved in hunting, there's a much bigger problem.......my son was tagging along and freezing his ass of with me for a few years before the youth hunt opened up, deer and turkey alike. It was nice to get out there before the crowds and spend quality time with him while the woods were quiet.

  11. I know there are many who argue that the youth hunt will be used by adults as a way to shoot a deer and have their kid tag it, but I'm sure that's no more of a problem then adults who shoot their deer the day before opening day, use a crossbow during archery season, shoot a deer over bait or any other illegal scenario you can imagine.........no matter what the season or implement used, there will always be illegal activity.

  12. Its easier for a beginner to pick up. I agree, I wasnt as "hard core" of a deer hunter until I picked up my bow either, but Id venture to say that most people's first taste involves gun season.

my first taste involved tagging along with my dad and uncles during deer season way before I was able to hunt, as did my son........nobody in my family were serious bowhunters way back then.

  13. I hunt a very large piece of public land and didn't even see anyone out during last years youth season. I hardly even heard any shots off in the distance.

my son and I hunted it last year, all on public land........not only didn't we see any other youth's hunting, but we never ran into any bowhunters or small game hunters.
