  1. just make sure that an old license is accepted if that's what he intends to use, NY says "Hunter Ed Certificate", so I take that to mean what it says.....find out ahead of time.

    Other State Certificates

New York State accepts Sportsman Education Certificates from other states when purchasing a sporting licenses.

Certificate Requirements in Other States and Countries: To verify whether a New York State Sportsman Education Certificate is accepted elsewhere, visit the International Hunter Education Association (External Link) to find certificate restrictions and requirements in all other states and countries. Many states and countries will require to see your hunter education certificate and will not accept your hunting or trapping license as proof of a certificate.

  2. I've never had an issue. The current place we hunt (same town), borders similar type of property. The few times a deer crossed the boundary, we call in and they have always given us access over the phone to retrieve. We always offer for them to come see the blood trail starts on legal hunting areas, but they never care to come out.

yeah, I think the DEP is pretty good as far as that goes.....the few times I chatted with DEP Police they were pretty friendly.

  3. .22 rimfire is allowed in any county for small game during an open deer season as far as I know. Nothing larger and no center fire rifles during the open deer season in shotgun only areas for deer.

you can scratch Suffolk County off that list.....

  4. You might want to look into that watershed property for hunting access, I know the reservoirs

give free permits but you have to apply. Then you're allowed to hunt and the posted signs don't apply because you have a permit. Just a shot. Congrats and happy hunting to you and your dad.

not always........even with a permit some DEP land is off limits.

  5. I don't think they're too concerned about guys shooting rifle cartridges out of them...........heck, that would probably help thin out the less desirable gene pools.

  6. Replace a Lost Certificate

Call 1-888-HUNT-ED2. You will be asked for your name, date of birth, type of course you took and when and where you took the course. Certificates dated earlier than 1980 cannot be found or replaced. If you need a certificate and yours cannot be found, you will need to retake the course.

here ya go....licenses can also be purchased online, takes a few minutes at home......and to be honest, it took me about 2 minutes to find that, probably less.

  7. the vacant land / posting issue aside, I would think that anyone who owns a home and has any assets would carry an umbrella policy....people can and will sue for anything these days, whether it's a friend who gets hurt on your boat, hurt in your car, falls out of your treestand on your property....you name it and it can happen.

  8. Then, I guess I am in the minority, or perhaps the minority.

I have time to dream, time to plan, time to prep., time to practice with guns and bow and set them up and time to actually get out to hunt.  I have time to be on this site, as all of you do, so that was part of my point.

So, I have time to actually read or look up the regulations.  The time excuse is a non-starter.  If you do not like to read, that is another issue.

I'm one of the few, I guess, that actually looks forward each summer to the new reg. booklet and site uploads and the changes to regulations page.  I sign up for and receive the press releases informing us of proposed new regs.  This is as much a part of my fun as working up a new load, wrestling with a scope mount problem or trying endless factory loads to see if a gun will shoot before I send it away.

Mistakes, most unintentionally, are made here by well meaning posters giving advice off the cuff.

Mistakes were apparently made in the guides themselves, but would not have been caught if someone had not read them thoroughly.

For me, it's me that is going to be out there, alone, when an Officer comes along.  I need to know, first hand what the actual rule is. (I know sometimes a minor amount appear to be conflicting).  Telling him "some guy told me" will do nothing.

If you were offended by this post, so be it.  I personally cannot understand how someone can put so much time, dollars and effort into this sport/activity/life style and give the rules to engage in it such short shrift.

As far as chastising me for even raising this, the fact that, I can choose to participate or not, you just did the same.

I know may will parse the above out and respond to an individual line or thought, attempting to prove them flase or silly.   I hope the remaining, thinking readers will view this post in its entirety.

Again, if it offended then I am clearly out of touch with the majority of you.  I will attempt to keep silent on these type of issues.  To each his or her own.

I feel the same way.......but I should add that it doesn't bother me that people ask, I'm just amazed that many don't take the time to care enough to read the regulations.....I know some will disagree, but you can find accurate answers to most questions on the DEC website.

  9. Anybody have any idea why there is a cut-off point on DMP sales? It doesn't make any sense to me. I would think that DMPs should be available at any time of any applicable season until the quota is depleted.

I think it has something to do with the system not being on a "first come first serve" basis.....they keep it where supposedly you have the same chance on day one as you do on the last, after the deadline they recalculate things and mail out permits to those who may have been previously declined and the zones that have an overabundance are made available until they run out............at least that's how I understand it.

  10. like I first said, there are too many variables. a young kid, a new hunter, a guy on hard times or with limited time. if you have this imagine of me fighting with or pissing in someone's cheerios about them shooting a big buck then again you're misunderstanding me. Big hugs, beers and great times were had opening day where that picture was posted above. My cousin who shot the wide rack 10 was in a stand I turned down believing i was in the right spot. I hold nothing against her, i was super happy for her (btw, the buck was finished off by my father), but I would be a liar if I hadn't told you the thought didn't cross my mind "dang I should have hunted that stand". Never vocalized other than a grin and a smile that she also thought was funny and later brought up. If that makes me or anyone else a "bad guy" then call me guilty I guess.

just out of curiosity, is there a point or reason for you to throw the "(btw, the buck was finished off by my father)" in there? that alone shows there's some sour grapes about someone else getting a nice deer that maybe they didn't "deserve"............but I may be wrong.

  11. I don't think it would work. This trail probably was in good shape many years ago. But now it's washed and pretty steep. Funny thing is there is an old rusted and broken down jeep on the property. Someone must have flipped it up on the property back in the like the 1960s if I had to guess.

if it's that steep, I would work on making a trail that takes a more gradual climb up the hill......my Uncle flipped one on a steep logging trail...not good on a 70 year old body.
