Not true in my experience... I've killed mature bucks on every property I've ever hunted. Even places where other hunters said they hadn't seen any bucks. You have to know where to look for them or have some snow to pick up a track. Grampy is right on point about how to consistently kill or at least be on and see mature bucks. You have to adapt to whatever the territory has to offer... IF, in fact, your goal is to kill mature bucks then you must lose the small buck mentality. I've killed plenty of mature bucks on public land, usually in farther than most hunters want to go. Skills are everything when talking about killer big bucks consistently. Anyone can kill one by accident... even on public land. It happens all the time, the record books are loaded with accidental encounters on public property bucks. The reason many hunters feel the way you do is because they lack the abilities and skills needed to consistently encounter a buck at all, let alone a mature bucks. Hence the reason many hunters are managing their properties for bigger bucks. The only way they'll ever see one is to make sure they grow enough of them to increase the odds.
I totally agree, I KNOW there are big mature bucks on the public land we hunt......however trophy hunting is not my priority, not to mention I don't usually have the time to devote to holding out for one, but for those who do, the opportunities are definitely there.

LOL.. I wonder sometimes who you guys hunt with and who you know... almost everyone I know that hunts has an old time hunting type camp... no jealousy, no antler envy... sometimes a little friendly competition for that year's bragging rights, but mostly guys enjoying having a group of guys that share the same passion as they do... this forum and most trade shows I do are the only places in my "hunting world" that I see "antler envy" or the "look at me" attitude. I agree that things may be changing, but the old-time guys and hunting camps are still alive and well.
I based that off of what I see and read outside of my hunting world....I don't know anyone in my circle of hunting friends who have that problem, but sadly I have seen the old time hunting camps slowly disappearing.
-
I knew plenty of hunters whose biggest thrill was seeing what other guys brought back to camp....those guys are gone as well as the old time hunting camps......now "antler envy" and "look at me" are king.

young bucks, like 1.5 - 2 years old?.........yes, it's been making sense to me forever.

The zip-tied overhanging branch is bringing in does like crazy, and a few small bucks so far. The more it is hit by bucks and does, it seems the more the branch gets visited. Can't get much more natural than the real thing. Here are two does adding their scents to the mix the other day.
that's a great picture!

if you go iron sights, make sure you have binoculars.....especially if you hunt an antler restriction zone or don't want to mistake a little spike for a doe.
-
oh, and I think the indoor ranges have a pretty consistent customer base and stay busy year round, so those may be worth a look as well.
-
I was wondering about when the shooting ranges get crowded or used more?
two weeks before season opens, with the weekend before being an absolute madhouse at some.......the only problem I see is some ranges make $$ selling targets, so they probably wouldn't be too keen on the idea of offering up free ones, but you never know.
-
I always lay the scent in a big circle, with my stand at the point that would be the start and finish of it.....that way no matter which way they go, they always have to come past me.
-
Nonsense... bucks are clueless which way a scent trail is leading unless they got the lady in sight.
I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen a buck following the trail of a hot doe the wrong way when she ran by me with bucks in pursuit heading the other way.
More than 100x's that's for sure.
The secret is to make your move when you see that happen. They can come from either direction, but I've NEVER seen that kind of reaction to a drag rag compared to the real deal.
well, I'm not quite sure it's nonsense..there are many animals, my dogs for sure, that can tell which way an animal is traveling...maybe with artificial lures, but in the real world many can....I'm sure there's exceptions to every rule...but like I said I'm no expert, but for every time you say it's nonsense, I have an instance where I say it's not.
-
last year I used "ever calm", while I can't say it brought them in, I can say that every deer in range appeared comfortable and it certainly didn't spook any....I'll definitely use it again.
-
just to be clear, if hunters hunting on a nuisance permit are tossing deer and wasting the meat, they should lose all hunting privileges. There is no excuse for it.
but, unfortunately it's allowed and legal in some if not most areas.

I see a field day coming for the ECO's during the first two weeks....
-
I've sweated my ass off putting up stands and killed deer that same afternoon out of them.......

Shooting a deer so it gets placed in a dump is not how I envisioned hunting when I signed up. Many consider them rats so I guess many think this is OK. Not me.
yeah, that's no better than nuisance permits....I personally won't shoot extra deer with the intention of just dumping it off at a donation center or anywhere else for that matter. I only do so if I can use it or I have a specific person who wants it for personal use.

reminds me of when we first had antler restrictions placed on our zone.....most I spoke to didn't know until I told them.
-
Using a drag line seems like a fork in the road. How does the buck know what way to follow. Does he go in your direction or back the way you had come from
I don't know the science behind it, but they know......not much different then a hunting dog that is trained to chase animals, they know which way the animal traveled......but then again that is a live animal that the stronger the scent is the fresher the track scent is. I have blood tracking dachshunds that can tell which way a wounded deer went, and sometimes the track is cold, but they still know. I'm sure there is a good answer, but I don't have it.

Can anybody tell me the ground rules needed to become a Venison processer in NYS as/per making sausage and other cuts on a for hire bases. Understanably I have been processing on a privet level for the last fifteen years and have been approched by others to go open to the public, I am however not a licensed butcher and would look soley to the processing IE sausage and other smoked products (all venison brought to me in a boned out state)
I think (if memory serves me correct) this is controlled by the dept. of Agriculture and you may find some info on their website......

I take the "out of sight, out of mind" approach. Pretty much try to handle butchering in the garage with door closed when possible. Wrap the carcass in the tarp and toss it in a garbage bag.
Not likely to convert the retirees in my area to hunters anyways. I do share venison with my immediate neighbors that like it.
you're not Italian by any chance are you? or as they say, a "Goodfella"?

well written......

maybe start with talking to them about stuff other than hunting for starters?......work that into a later conversation after you get a feel for them........

Warm temps shouldn't be a concern. NY has a late start compared to other states.
Many people killing deer in 90 degree temps

yup, I was just thinking about all the western states that have been killing big game for weeks already..........
