Good, Inexpensive Rifle?
deerpassion replied to Dstone001's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
i can vouch for that... bought a savage M 111 30-06 on a fathers day special at gander a few years back for 400 with a bushnell 3 x 9 on it and it also is a tack driver without exception... sited it in three years ago and its still dead on, with careful handling of course ! -
I hope you at least lock it up with a cable lock when leaving over night, they're cheap, don't weigh nothin , and at least give me a little peice of mind its gonna be there for the morning sit...
-
ya i've got the summit open shot which weighs roughly 15 or 16 that is going to be 95% percent of my hunting, but i've got this one spot in a state forest that is swamp with huge old rubs that just doesn't lend itself to a climber and it is right on the edge of bedding, so makin a bunch a racket hooken up a climber is not and option in there, would rather just set a ladder in there and be done with it so i can just climb up and be as quiet as possible.... thanks for the input
-
well when ya put it that way lol... nice work
-
now that's some ingenuity right there... how much did the thing cost ya all said and done with the wood, hardware, and the four ratchets? seems like it mighta been cheaper just to by a moderately priced hang on?
-
So it was my impression that stands are NOT allowed on WMA's, must pack in and out each time, but on State Forest Land I thought is was no sooner than 30 days before season you could put a stand out and leave it up till the end of big game season... just recently got my bow certification out of the way and the instructor now says that no stands are allowed to sit on ANY state land for any period of time... anyone have any thoughts on this? gonna call the DEC and verify this soon!!!!

ya give it a few weeks to air out n for them to get used to it n they'll be back for sure...

the day licences went on sale they had em sitting right on the counter at gander mountain...

oak orchard, tonowanda, iroquois national forst....
deerpassion replied to deerpassion's topic in Deer Hunting
thanks for the advice , might try n tackle that one next season... have only had time to scout tonowanda and carlton state forest... got some decent bucks on cam in tonawanda, and some in carlton with exception of two big boys! I like to scout my a$$ off before i hunt an area and just don't have the time to delve into iroquois not to mention all my trail cams are busy right now haha.. but I definitely want to hunt it next season cause I here it receives much less pressure than ton or oak orchard, has to be some big boys tucked back in there... -
when can I come over don't know about you but i see four shooters outa that group, good luck
-
well after reading everyone's input I think my plan of action is going to be to set a couple mid september... gonna get some preorbital for the branch, and spray one spray of mock scrape and then wiz in it and see what happens,., should be a fun little experiment that will hopefully pay off this season and many more to come...
-
really, ya'll pee in your mock scrape or an existing one? hmmm might be worth a try, I wiz off the down wind side a my stand all the time and have had deer right at the base without spookin... food for thought...
-
i've been using code blue's mock scrape 1oz srpay bottle ... a couple a sprays on the scrape and one on the branch and your good for a week or two... been looking at getting some of the mock scrape dirt that comes in a pouch... real soil infused with the scrape ingredients that you mix in with the roughed up soil and it is supposed to reactivate itself with moisture or rain, so if you have a spot you don't visit regularly or is far from home you would be good for almost a month without refreshing it...
-
congrats... very cool, but can be costly lol... ever since I bought the carbon express maxima hunter's last year i've done it twice... and at $80+ dollars a pop for a six pack I don't even dare shoot at the same circle anymore
-
that's interesting!!! I am gonna have to think of some creative way to get the camera up high and get it angled down at it so they don't spook with the cam as they are workin it and never return cause i got two regulars that are bruisers.. would hate to spoil it before it even began... maybe a wedge or something ... hhmmm... did you notice on any of your video's the bucks spotting the camera and reacting negatively to it... ? don't know if you watched that video on another post here a little while back about the research done with them spotting the trail cams? gonna give it a whirl any how...
-
well since bow is so early this year its a toss up... but im gonna set one about a week before season and put a cam on it... maybe it'll get em at least curious or territorial and get em stoppin by every few days to check out who's in the neighborhood...
-
im not sure about other state lands, but i know tonawanda wma has mounds , and you don't need any kind of license for that... maybe a pistol permit if that's what your going for but other than that no...

DMP's selection available today - What did you get!?
deerpassion replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
got mine for 8G -
great buck, he looks to be only three, man he would be a giant next year, but i'm not sayin i wouldn't sling an arrow at em... good luck man
-
ya i was shocked too.... my guess is the two big boys are home bodies on the bordering farms and they are just takin a stroll through to get some apples... once people start walkin in the woods I don't think they'll move very far... just hopin they'll keep this pattern up until the the 1st of October so I can get a crack at em before they become educated, but im not holdin my breath... the big bodied 8 in the lighter pics has frequented every 2 days or so, so my money is on him, but man would i sure love to see that tallllll 8, and i love those brows on him, only got him on one evening though.. gonna leave the cam in till the beginning of season and hopefully he comes back with some velvet hangin off, that would be an AWSOME pic of him... would be my biggest deer to date if I bagged that boy, he only looks like a three year old, so i could only imagine what he would be next year!... the next month and a half is going to draggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if i don't see those two (which i can only pray i can hold out for one of them) there are plenty of other bucks in the area...
-
yaaaa budy!!!! now seeing them in season is another story
-
but where oh were could those big bucks be... hhmmm.. guess that is the million dollar question haha
-
All of these bucks are on a one week soak on state land here in western NY... Check out the body on this bad boy... Meet high tower... .....
-
man im sure hopin for that S, SW wind on opening day, be perfect blowing my scent right out over the swamp...
