No matter where the discussion varies, it always comes back to simply making it easier to getting larger racks. Period. People try and disguise that goal all day and night, but that's still where it ends up.
-
Most people wouldn't but a lot of people do. A firearm should not even be put to a shoulder until the decision has already been made to shoot but I'll bet a very large percentage of hunters don't follow that rule either.
-
How about this alternative? The idea *should be* to improve the status of the deer herd. That doesn't necessarily mean increase the numbers, although in some cases it may if the land can support it. What if: you increase or maintain the amount of doe licenses depending on the area and restrict ALL areas to ONE buck per year per license. You pick your method of harvest, but you only get one. I believe that would accomplish a lot more than mandatory ARs.
-
and the problem with that would be? Other than more guys getting bigger racks, more easily, I've seen no justification for ARs
-
So it comes down to people wanting to be able to shoot bigger horned animals easier. And I should support that... why?
-
Other than making it easier for guys to be able to more easily get a big rack, can someone please succinctly and unemotionally list the benefits of ARs to the deer herd, which is what this whole thing should be about. I don't give a rats a** if it's easier for anyone to do anything or not. How does the herd benefit?
-
I just don't understand how in the world the deer population has survived for centuries without the benefit of these laws. It's just mind boggling.
-
Absolutely. I believe that everyone who supports ARs should fall under their rules. Those of us who don't support ARs are therefore exempt.

Well driving is driving, period - same risk. There are still idiot drivers around you who aren't paying attention which always puts you in a dangerous situation. Hunting is hunting, period - same risk. There are still idiot hunters around you who aren't paying attention which always puts you in a dangerous situation. If someone is quite a distance from you and there is a deer between the two of you which is standing on a knoll higher than the other guy - you very likely could be within his sight path and without blaze on he will probably never even know it. If you feel comfortable betting your life upon the judgement and dedication by individuals you've never met - more power to you. I'd much rather walk out of the woods in the evening.

not to me, makes about the same amount of sense

Kind of like wearing your seatbelt until you get to the freeway.

Hi. Welcome to the wonderful world of getting out into the woods in the fall/winter! As for the ticks, do yourself a favor - checkout this thread, get some Sawyers, and USE IT. Tick Thread Link

I didn't mean to implicate anyone here, I haven't really been around long enough to formulate any opinions of anyone. (YET. ) Just a REALLY sore subject with me which is why I try and stay the heck out of it but sometimes I just get overtaken by overwhelming forces. lol
-
You don't know me, but make it four. I bow hunted for years until I was unlucky enough to be in a car accident that broke my back in various places. Now I'm denied that privilege. I could go on an extended rant on the subject but it's all been said before and changes no ones opinion. (can you tell I'm somewhat bitter towards those who block it?)

Not a biggie: I do use the "like" feature, but I haven't used it yet today and when I tried I get "You have reached your quota of positive likes for the day" Two questions: 1) why would I reach the quota for today when I haven't used the function today? 2) The phrase "positive likes" would imply that there is a "negative like" function, but I don't see it? <just kidding, but it'd be a good function! >

I'm with you.

If *everyone* followed basic safety rules: NEVER point a gun at ANYTHING until you're SURE you're going to shoot it there wouldn't be a problem. But until Darwinism really works (read as: never) protecting your azz from idiots should be your #1 priority.
-
But if people are going to tout that it's not simply for increasing trophy potential then shouldn't there be some supportive data to show how the DEER will actually benefit from the changes? I don't follow that logic at all. So it's better to let a subset of people represent the whole rather than finding out what the position of the whole is. Just not following. The key words in that sentence are supposed to be and such as. That gives me about as much confidence as does the government telling me how great Obamacare is...

That's good, better find some wood to knock on though when saying that. ;-) What are you hunting though, these?
-
Yep, sure am DH. I've lived in DC for 40 years and it's gotten tighter every year. I recently got shut out of a long time parcel as well. You have two choices. Take your chances on the local state properties or travel. Sux but that's about the size of it around here.

Congratulations! (to you both. )

dang, not good news

The question are rather self explanatory. I'm curious if anyone has actually seen wild pigs in NYS and where.

I may of missed it but I didn't see anything indicating any improvement in the condition of the deer herd, simply bigger antlers. I'd really like to know the criteria used for selecting the survey participants. Seems like it would of been fairly easy and fair to all to implement the survey on the DEC site. Registration for the survey would be simple with your DEC ID number. They all registered hunters would have the ability to participate in the survey if they chose to do so.
