  1. How much property and how much pressure? Still hunting is an extremely rewarding hunt. Granted, nowhere near as successful in most cases and it takes a lot more involvement by you to know the area and even the deer but what a rush when you succeed. Great fun but you need a good sized area to practice it.
  2. Huh? Where? Sorry, as I said before - anything (in New York) south of Fishkill doesn't compute in my memory banks....
  3. Naw, I'm a newbie - here at least. Anyone that's been on the net for any length of time knows that chit happens sometimes and as long as it's addressed promptly by the site admins/mods it's no biggie and just goes with the territory. Having managed boards, one of the keys is consistent enforcement of the rules irrespective of who the violators are. And with the amount of mods I've see here, that shouldn't be an issue...
  4. I'm in the area too, but think of it this way.... you wanna take a walk on Main Street say... oh... around midnight?
  5. Haven't been to NW PA have ya? Better be in a Chevy pick-em-up with a rack in the window or yur a foriner (spelin intentional)
  6. You ain't lyin'! Ain't nuthin' south of Fishkill.
  7. no way affiliated with 'em Target Link (10/17/13 only)
  8. I have to admit that trying to decipher what part of a post is the quote and what part is the new text is somewhat of a challenge. At first I thought my eyes finally *really* went on me.
  9. I'm not sure where you are so this may be a bit if a hike for you... or not... but as I put in another thread, East Fishkill Provisions Smoke Haus venison processing is excellent. They're located in Hopewell Junction. East Fishkill Provisions Smoke Haus
  10. I've always cut/butchered my own so I can't help with that aspect but if you want someone to process for you the Smoke Haus in Hopewell Junction does excellent work. Their venison pepperoni is just outrageous. East Fishkill Provisions Smoke Haus venison processing As far as butcher, I don't know why they would object to any custom cut specifications. Especially the ones you're looking into. Less processing on their side of things.
  11. bummer but it still gets your heart pumpin' when they come in doesn't it? Always a good day.
  12. My 12 Ga. Mossy 500 does not kick. Seriously, I can shoot slugs through it all day in a t-shirt and my shoulder won't hurt. It's the best of all worlds for NY. If I put the cantilever barrel on with the 3x9 Leupold, I'll reach out with it comfortably to 150 yards, no problem. It'll take down anything that the NE has to offer. For birds, etc; just take off the rifled barrel and put on the smoothbore with my choice of 3 choke tubes. Well, with slugs it does feel about like a 20ga with skeet loads but that's it. Not only doesn't it kick, but there really no muzzle climb. Anyone can shoot this gun the way it's setup. Plus the adjustable stock is nice, Adjust to person, how they're dressed, etc. Now, why doesn't it kick? Here's why - I have one of these on it, and yes it is legal. Stock Link
  13. 2 pounds (about 1 kg) venison or beef sliced 1/8-inch (3 mm) thick 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 cup (240 ml) bourbon or 2 cups (480 ml) red wine (I use the bourbon) 1 cup (240 ml) water Marinate overnight in the refrigerator in a non-metal pan, covered. (I use a zip-lock bag) Coat with a mixture of 1/2 honey and 1/2 water and hang on a rack for 8 hours to dry. Place in a cold smoker for 12 hours. Of course any recipe is simply a guideline and open to whatever modifications you want.
  14. Hi Jerry, Just took a ride over toward that way to leaf peep last weekend. I live in Poughkeepsie and took a run over Minnewaska, over through Ellenville and I was going to keep going over toward Liberty but the color just wasn't all that great. Depending on what happens with the casino's you could end up a tycoon if you have property around Monticello. Good luck
  15. Not necessary but sound on Deer and Dog Video link
  16. I've used the scuba antifog while snorkeling/etc and it worked well. My only concern with it is if it would damage the coatings on my bifocals.
  17. and typically dangerous, at least that's been my experience.
  18. Oh, I didn't mean to imply that they're bad - just probably worth a question to the dr about if pursuing them.
  19. I don't know how common this is but just fyi; my wife used to wear contacts before her lasix surgery and almost lost sight in one of her eyes. She was using those extended wear ones that you leave in for 30 days or something and she got a detached retina somehow due to leaving them in. I don't recall the specifics but probably worth asking your optometrist about if you're considering them.
  20. ok - Thanks CCHC. I kinda figured it was per lease period. 11 guys at 1650 = about 18 grand. That sounded like about on par to me, but 18 grand per year? I'll pass I guess. Seems like it'd be more cost effective to actually buy something at those rates but believe me, I'm all too familiar with the tribulations of a bunch of guys doing that too.
  21. PREDATE: NAHC = North American Hunting Club I migrated here after the latest website changes they implemented which, to say are horrible would be a drastic understatement! I guess I should of changed my logon handle here so people here didn't pre-judge. I tried calling the number - it's a tutoring companies answering machine. So I sent him an email and got a reply actually. It didn't say a whole lot though so I replied with a couple of questions - met with silence. Here's the general gist of his reply: "Thanks for responding. We have 2 openings for members. The club is a bunch a guys who share a love of hunting and hanging out. We lease the 848 acres from a lumber company. We have a 5 year lease with them, we are in year 2 of the lease. The dues are $1650 per man. We keep the club to 11 members so we have plenty of room in the house and out in the field. I've attached a topo map of the property so you can see what the terrain is like." So I asked if the 1650 was per year per man or per LEASE period per man. If per yr/man that's awfully high but I can't get an answer. I do know where the property is and it's got some pretty steep sections. There are deer there but I wouldn't plan on getting run over or anything. ;-) Doesn't say much though that they guy won't really reply and if he posts every year it makes me wonder why the high turnover rate.
  22. Zag, I hear ya about the issue with binocs. My hunting binocs have a rubber piece on each eyepiece that turns in or out that's supposed to make them work with glasses. About the only effective thing I found was to spend time with the binocs and get a system worked out that works for you. A pita but me taking my glasses off isn't an option. And contacts aren't either.
  23. I'd put money on it being the womans fertile time of the month. Seriously.
  24. I agree Eagle, not really much you can do about it. I do have transitions but don't see where that'd do much about glare. I also have much more problem with fogging. Someone (here I *think*) suggested using the scuba antifog gel. I was going to get some and ask my eye dr about it but given that yahoos from Westchester invaded where I hunt, I haven't the need this year. It's worth investigating in the future though.
  25. Given my experience with the electric company and people not wanting to grant easements even if I would of wanted to pay the ransom to the electric company, I'll never consider buying a piece of property that doesn't already have juice to it.
