  1. I always take three shots to check them. Better safe than sorry. I may not need to do two and my line of thinking may be open to debate, but I fire one and then the second with a dirty barrel and the third is just to confirm the second. The barrel isn't cleaned after that until the end of the season. The other thing I do is leave the gun in the garage until seasons end. No huge temp swings that way. Again, probably not really necessary... but it makes me feel better.
  2. hm, no report. I hope that means that you're butchering!
  3. Congratulations and welcome to the "feet planted firmly on ground" club.
  4. Good for her! May as well set the ground rules right up front. Don't like it? Don't let the door...
  5. I hope you find it. But I'd plan on not. Mark the last spot where you have blood and mark the suspected/known direction of travel. Go and get yourself a Coleman Gas Lantern and return at dusk. The Coleman make blood shine like under a black light. Extra gas and mantles are recommended. The mantles break very easily if the lantern smacks a tree or something. Good luck.
  6. I s'pose it coitenly could be. I'm certainly no administration supporter... dat's fer sure.
  7. I was in large scale CAD development for 38 years for a "local computer company" and I agree with the scalability issues. I didn't intend for this to be a bashing thread, simply an informational one for those who may find it beneficial.
  8. Caveat: This is *NOT* a joke. Three programmers from (I don't remember where) spent a weekend, reviewed the source code for the governments healthcare site, and coded their own. It does have a few bumps. But the intent is to show you the various plan costs based on your area. You can *NOT* sign up from their site. It also does have some "bumps" but they are continually updating the site. For instance, I entered Chesapeake, VA zipcode and no plans showed up for some reason. They also haven't gotten the NY data yet as NY has it's own exchange and they haven't been able to get that info from NY yet - they say they're working on it. They took the price calculations directly from the governments site. I know most of us here are from NY but thought you may have relatives or know others who may benefit from the information at this site. Edit: You can enter another zipcode of an area similar to yours just to get an idea of costs. I entered a zip around Philly just to get a clue - it worked. http://www.thehealthsherpa.com/
  9. If you end up with the 76CSx - - give me a shout, I have a file that has all of the settings I finally settled on after much reading and trial and error. May not be exactly to your liking but will get it all set and also be a good tool for you to become familiar with the available menus and various settings. It is a very customizable unit. It also supports different datums for topos.

    Got 'em!!

    Congratulations and enjoy dinner!
  11. I've got a Garmin 76CSx - LOVE it. I've used it in some pretty heavy cover woods and have never lost satellite reception due to canopy. It works in the woods, on the road, and on the water. A lot of bang for the bucks. Not as good on the roads as our Nuvi, but it certainly will get ya there.
  12. Ok, so I'm going along with people thinking that it's a good thing that they want to ban trans fats. I mean, the studies have cost the american people huge amounts of money and then all the bureaucracy of analysis and then the cost of getting legislation through; that's a LOT of taxpayer money! Of course they won't give those cost number out. But it's going to save a ton of lives, right? Wrong. "Avoiding foods containing artificially produced trans fat could prevent 10,000 to 20,000 heart attacks and 3,000 to 7,000 coronary heart disease deaths each year, according to one study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." According to the US Census Bureau , the US population is at 300 million and climbing steadily. So if we use the worst case numbers, that means that the legislation will affect .0067% of the population at a maximum for heart attacks and .0023% of the population for heart disease deaths. Now, call me a bad person but are those numbers really worth protecting 27000 people, max, against themselves? But we're not over-regulated or anything. They just can't find enough ways to blow our tax money. <phew> ok, I feel much better now. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
  13. It depends on conditions, movement, etc. When I do go, I'm in the woods all day unless of course I get one. I carry a lunch and stay. Do I stay in one place or move/still hunt? Again, it depends. I've seen a lot of deer mid-day.
  14. I'm with you. Never been in a tree stand, don't plan on it. I figure if I was meant to be in trees I'd have feathers.
  15. Thanks, the only one I could find out about this morning was the prop 1 A friend of mine sent me this pic. It'll never happen though. de Blasio being elected shows the current sentiment. "give me everything and make someone else pay for it"
  16. Dunno - it could well be a hoax. It was on Channel 2 news last night and they interviewed a woman who, in theory, saw the deer and others in her yard. True? No idea, just saying it was on the "news" out of NYC
  17. Typically, conservation officers are not required to have a search warrant. Should they is a matter that can be argued until the cows come home with no resolution. Bottom line, it's the law of the land and my view is if you voluntarily choose to participate in the activity you also accept the laws that go with it. As Paula said, if you're legal and not confrontational with the officers, it shouldn't be any big deal.
  18. I still-hunt when I can and have often thought of getting a shooting stick of some sort. Haven't yet though.
  19. I can't think of one I've ever seen either.
  20. When I was young I was a fairly good shot off-hand. But I shot more rounds than you could probably imagine. In my opinion, that's the key. I wouldn't even hazard a guess at how many rounds of each caliber I've sent. It'd be one hell of a big number though. With the prices today, that'd be tough to do. Today, as Doc said, I look for a tree, or settle on my knees if sitting, etc to stabilize things. Doc: You're not wobbling any less on 2x vs 9x - the movement is simply shown more at 9x but 2x is wobbling the same amount, you just don't know it.
  21. It was on the news and the woman said that it looked like it was doing fine and keeping up with others. Sad though.
  22. Google is VERY recent. Bing is VERY old. At least from the views of our house. Now, woods don't change that often so it may not matter much but one never knows.
  23. I don't hang except to skin and quarter, then into the fridge and then cut, vacuum sealed and into the deep freeze. If I were to hang, I agree with the poster who suggested hanging in a controlled env. I would definitely not suggest hanging at 40 or higher due to bacteria formation at those temps.
