Phil Shoemaker, a Alaskan guide has used a 30-06 with 200gr bullets for his gun of choice when backing up his brown bear hunters off and on for years. If I could wave the magic wand and change my 300WSM into a 30-06 over night, I sure would. But since I can't, I'll live with it an advise others who might dip their toes into the COLD magnum waters............<grin>

shawn, pretty sure I've got a freezer full of venison. Back straps, roasts, ground, sausage aplenty. Wild turkey? Yep Wild boar? Yep. Even some waffles. We're doing are best to whittle it down with 3-4 meals a week. Slow but sure..... No venison ribs though, they go back to nature. There could be a nuisance deer in there too but you sure won't see me talking about it . Ain't nothing to it, unless your a novice.

Heck no it isn't "too much" for a deer but is it too much for you? If you've never shot one, you should find a friend with one and whack away with it for a magazine or two........... Do you own any rifles now? What chambering? Do you have a good place to shoot and do you plan on just hunting deer with it? If your just going to use it for deer hunting each year and shoot 1-2 shoots prior to the season for sight in, then the 300 is just fine. The thing is, depending on your answers, much better choices are available. $1000 is a decent amount of money for any of us. If this is a one and done deal, you better REALLY enjoy shooting the thing! If this could be the start of a gun safe full of love, then have a ball and blow it all. <grin> Talk to me Goose..........................................................

They all sound like great choices! Load 'em up and get 'em sighted in. Everybody should strive to burn up a box or two of ammo before opening day, at a minimum. Twist my arm...................
