I feel like you understand what I'm saying but still don't find issue with accidental and intentional acts of self arm being lumped together as concerning. You're overestimating the intelligence of many american's and in 30s they don't even think to question the source of the data. So yes, a gun death is a gun death. But is suicide something that should drive gun regulations or should we maybe focus on mental health? Because if it's not a gun, it's a bridge or pills or a rope etc.
-
I agree... my only explanation is that you may have only clipped the backside lung if he was quartering away and a single lung liver can be a slow death. But honestly I would have thought dead in under 50 looking at those pics.
-
yikes. i cant imagine that wasn't traumatic.
-
man that's a tough one, but glad you recovered him and he's done suffering.

hey man a bloody nighttime arrow and no recovery insight? We don't know if we should cheer or send well wishes lol edit, nevermind i see the update. Congrats!

Was toying with hunting this AM, but I didn't like the warm weather we just got and tried to remind myself not to overhunt too early. I know many subscribe to "you can't kill them at home" but I also think it matter what you're trying to kill. So I'm trying to stay real low impact. Will still probably hunt tomorrow with another cold snap. Cam at the stand I was going to hunt did pop a mom and fawn which I would have passed anyhow.

The ad created an analogy of a loose tiger in the house around kids playing and at the end put up the stat that firearms are the leading cause of death for children, very very strongly implying that reckless and careless gun owners leaving loaded firearms around the house are killing more kids than anything else. If you recall my first post and a few other members posts, nobody is not advocating for locking up firearms. It's the only thing I like about the new gun laws and of course I've been in compliance with even before my oldest was born. However, if you remove suicide from those stats, it's not the leading cause of death. Which would change the narrative that kids aren't dying more than anything else from accidental shootings therefore ruining the whole "loose tiger in the house" narrative. What some of us are taking exception to is something that the media has run wildly unchecked with for some time now, and that is manipulating or falsely representing data. COVID is a great example. Most reasonable americans know that covid is real and the first few strains were deadly even for some healthy people. But there was a while early on where many deaths that were not covid deaths were labeled as covid and it very falsely misrepresented the mortality rate, especially considering there were not tests so we didn't know how many people had it and survived. The fact that you can't see why including suicide deaths in an ad about securing guns is a problem is alarming. I had a coworker whose teen son hung himself. If they want out, they'll find a way.

I mean it's not every day but it's pretty close. News 10 just had an interview from a mom whos 3 year old was shot. Those numbers, btw are included in this data.
-
does it distinguish by homicide and suicide? Anti-gun people always love to include suicide in their numbers. Like yeah guns the easy way out so they take it if they can, but if they want to end their life, they'll find a way. Problem is, cause of death is never suicide, it's overdose, jumping, gun etc.
-
IDK about you but from a very young age I was taught to respect a firearm and taught firearm safety. I was never made to feel afraid of them, but to understand that yeah, a loaded gun in the hands of a 6 year old might as well be a tiger. The only issue I have with this ad is how they portray their stats on leading cause of death. But if they use the analogy of a tiger in the house as similar to that as a loaded pistol in somebodies sock drawer and that moves the needle for some? why not?

We should have no issue with locking guns up in houses with minors. This isn't infringing on your freedoms, it's just the right thing to do.

I have a couple cams in fields that would get good sun. My browning's take 16 AA's and the price of batteries isn't getting any better. Looks like most solar adapters are interchangeable with most cams. Anyone have any success or failures with these?
-
I don't know the official term, but I did notice a nearly full moon on my way out last night. That's never good for evening action in my book, even with cooler temps. Sure enough cams were popping around 10pm and again 4am.

Official 2022 Fall Plots Thread
Five Seasons replied to Five Seasons's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
thanks i've heard that as well about them not even touching some newer veggies they haven't seen before. My area is really rich in food, but not much after the corn is cut and the apples are gone. I did blends specifically for that reason. In fact I even split my plot in half with 2 different blends haha. I do think you bring up a good point though, do I keep planting stuff that isn't getting eaten in hopes they eventually eat it or pivot to something like beans? I guess we will see. Right now my focus is blood on the ground and not food plots haha. -
Reminder tonight of my hatred of squirrels. Quite a racket all around me, but then some good twig snapping action south of me that was a deer for sure using a well traveled run that goes by another stand. One I save for the rut. Anyhow as this is happening and I’m watching intently, I hear what I think is squirrel commotion to the north east and finally take a peak to see a nice shooter buck slowly moving through some real thick stuff about 50 yards from me. I waited to see if he’s turn and when he didn’t I tried some grunts. A minute went by and I tried the Hail Mary rattle. I know it’s early but I’ve seen some smaller bucks soaring on cam so who knows. Not a bad sit for a weeknight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Got in a bit ago. Really took my time walking in. Left this stand alone for over a month and a bunch of sticks down. Warmer than I’d like but expecting it to cook as the sun drops. Didn’t bump anything on the way which is a good start. You forget how dense the canopy is this early. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

i'm going out tonight. cams have been very active for this time a year, but mostly 1.5's and 2.5's. Looks like it's going to warm up a little so you just never know!

But he's also a non-hunter telling other people how to hunt? GTFO with that. I don't want to derail this thread any further so I'll leave it be here, but it sounds like he's a good archer and not a great hunter. Nothing wrong with that. But history does tell us that woodsmanship, hunting ability, archer accuracy etc are not mutually exclusive. You can be a good hunter and not a good archer and vise versa. I'd have a hard time taking hunting advice from a guy who quit hunting. Now if I was in an archery league or competing on paper? Sure, sounds like he'd be a great teacher. carry on yall.
-
So he's a mature buck hunter only, but doesn't have the time and just gave up on it all together instead? I'm sorry man, there's something more here and if there's not, this guys opinion does not reflect what many of us believe to be true with regards to archery hunting.

Official 2022 Fall Plots Thread
Five Seasons replied to Five Seasons's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
from what I read, and what I hope is that they'll still be in there during gun season maybe digging up the bulbs? The fall plot was really intended for gun more than bow. Something to suck them in when all the corn is cut. I guess we will see. -
we agree there, but I'll save the debate from another thread. The course goes a long way, but every compound hunter here and on AT has taken it, yet we still make bad choices (including myself here). All I was trying to point out is that I don't think many deer are lost because of accuracy, I think they're lost because of shot choice and I don't see how a crossbow would change that, other than potentially increase the wounding loss rate. Sure they're more accurate and at greater distance, but a shoulder is a shoulder and quartering towards is quartering towards regardless. Heck over confidence because you have a more lethal and accurate weapon capable of longer ranges could be even worse.
-
you're right here. I will add too that many hunters discount prep. I know a few here that put in the time like I do, but many don't. I spend weekends and countless hours trimming shooting lanes, adjusting stand placement, clearing runs etc. Sometimes we get caught in taking a bad shot because it was the only shot we had on that nice buck. My advice to all here is to spend more time in August and September working your stands so that you don't have to rely on that one shooting lane only. If you're hunting a field, set a marker out at the distance you're comfortable shooting with and then you don't have to rely on your range finder in the heat of the moment. So many things we can do to prep for hunting that will pay off.
-
I stopped reading when he said the guy no longer deer hunts with a bow, and waits for gun. I'd give up my first born before I stopped bow hunting lol. Tells me he's a target shooter and nothing more. Many guys can win gold medals shooting at a target and be some of the worst shots in the woods. They are not the same thing.
-
and yet there are some that think the crossbow is the cure all. If anything it will be less experienced string and arrow hunters taking shots they're comfortable with a gun but with a bolt. It's not often that archers shots are poor, but their shot choice is from being caught up in the moment. the crossbow doesn't solve any of this, it just puts more guys with less education in the woods.

I'm not sure there are many lurkers. I just tested making a new user yesterday and you can't even do it. This site is basically dead other than existing members.
