  1. agree. helps the venison last longer too. I think next season when I'm grinding I'll do a 5 pound batch of 50/50 and freeze. I'd love to be able to do everything fresh, but damn is a lot to skin, cut up, grind and package a deer. To add the sausage making step would be a bit much. So far freezing then making the sausage later on hasn't seemed to be an issue.
  2. as previously stated, I would have strongly supported this: Authorizes those 55 years old or older to use a crossbow in a special archery season Authorizes those physical unable to draw a longbow as determined by a physician to use a crossbow in a special archery season can't get behind a lot of the other parts though, and therein lies the problem with our legislative system.
  3. yeah i've heard that as well. There's a part of me though that struggles with "when is wild game, no longer wild game". Ya know?
  4. i will say that the snack sticks we didn't freeze have been holding up great in the fridge. Very pleased. Not quite costanza's, but still good. The breakfast sausuage is a little dry. I'm not sure if it was me, or if it's just the fact that it's 80% venison and not full pork or chicken like the grocery store. Still good, but my only real minor gripe.
  5. last year at sodus bay we're boarding my FIL's boat and it's easily in the high 80's and some amish were fishing in and around the docks. Full amish gear in the blazing sun...
  6. i've seen some sh!t too. I do sometimes feel bad for the guy/gal who is learning the whole boat/trailer/launch thing and some a55shole is impatient and giving them a hard time. Although, if you're new to this thing, dont go during a busy period. It does take some practice though.
  7. i thought this was understood with my posts, but maybe not so I'll state it. Addicts are not blameless. They carry the most responsibility for sure. But the topic was on sensitivity towards them and that's where I felt the need to mention that they're not all devil worshiping drug fiends. And that society has done its fair share in creating the situation we are now in.
  8. there are studies out there. Generally the rich can still afford or know a doctor who can prescribe the pills. The middle class and below cannot afford illegal pain killers and turn to heroin. This is pretty well known path.
  9. bahahah, i misunderstood the post. My bad, it was late and i was enjoying a beer... or 2 on the deck. the taxidermist might be able to give you dimensions to determine how you can transport. I would also say a tarp for a short trip on a non-rainy or super sunny day should be ok? I'd lay a bunch of blankets and stuff down too. Maybe m00g was on to something with the carpet?
  10. you speak like addiction is a choice. The vast majority of patients don't choose to abuse. They become addicted and have trouble digging out. Some people have a better tolerance, stronger willed etc. Some have a strong addictive personality. Nobody just decides they want to end up injecting heroin in a city alley. They suffering either physically or emotionally and the drug is the only thing that helps. If we as a society would work harder on mental health and alternative, safer pain management like marijuana then those who will struggle with addiction may not ever need the gateway prescription in the first place. and if this is some sort of tough guy thing for you, look no further than many of our professional athletes like Brett Farve and others who have taken these pills to recover from injuries and can no longer seem to live without them. My boss is a marine. had a horrible head on collision accident a few weeks ago from a drunk driver. Broke her back in multiple places, ribs, sternum etc. She's basically refusing many of the pain meds as much as she can tolerate because she knows the long term affects.
  11. the fact that they have not ruled on this, or taken up the issue further solidifies my point. Additionally, chef was banned from a group on facebook, not facebook. That is exactly like being banned from a specific hunting forum. man there is so much ignorance here I'm not even sure what to say. Please just do a little research on the opioid crisis (one recognized even by trump). Please try and understand the pain clinics in florida and the pharmaceutical lobbyist position on this before you just swallow "all doctors are good" nonsense. To your second point, there's nothing stopping chef from starting his own facebook group and not silencing the opposition. It's even free. You can find anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, fake moon landing groups. And you can find pro-life and pro-choice. Each filtering the other sides's opinion.
  12. Anything bigger than a whitetail is generally skinned and quartered in the field. It’s not actually as hard or bad as it sounds. But you would need to get the hide cooled and stored properly. I have a large Coleman just for this purpose should I ever be so lucky. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. One cannot make the case. Just like this website. It is owned and operated by a private business or person. Not the government (ie public) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. freedom of speech works like this. No 1st amendment: Chef makes comment on facebook. gov't doesn't like comment and throws chef in jail. 1st amendment: chef makes comment to boss or on facebook boss or admin doesn't like comment and bans/fires chef chef still not in jail the first amendment is not freedom from consequences. It's the right to say things and not go to jail for them (with the exception of threatening harm and such). It's why you can still be openly racist and not go to jail. However, nobody will generally hire you or want to be around you... except maybe papsmear.
  15. what many fail to understand is that most do not just seek out heroin. They become addicted through an opiate that was prescribed to them for an injury or illness and can no longer afford or find their fix and resort to the next available thing. that said, I'm not one of those who goes around promoting legal injection sites, similar to not allowing illegals to have a drivers license. I also don't think you deserved a ban, but you are being a little insensitive. I know a few families who have lost loved ones from this epidemic, hooked just the way I mentioned above and I doubt you would say the same to their face. PS, pass legalized weed so people can treat their pain naturally.
  16. I'm in the Rochester area and this Friday I'm taking a trip to Bloomfield to check out the new Matthews vertix. I fully intend to shop the other brands as well, but I'm a Matthews guy at heart and have heard nothing but good things about this bow. Anyhow, I've done business with traditions and guaranteed in the past but both are gone. Bullzeye has 11 vertix in my draw length alone so I'm going in expecting a good selection. I also know it's June, so I should be beating any crazy rush or service issues where most shops can get bad reputations from sometimes unreasonable customer expectations. That said, anything I should know about the place? Any other options for Matthews dealers within an hour of Roc that I should be looking at?
  17. that's because matthews is the shit
  18. i think that's pretty common. My dad mounted a buck a few years ago that wasn't recovered in time and lost the cape to coyotes.
  19. where'd you find the recipe? that does look amazing.
  20. it's funny, tunes would be my first priority too. haha
  21. there was a show on discovery or history a while back. it was a family taxidermy business I think. I dont think it lasted very long but I watched a bunch of the episodes. It was really interesting and helped show just how detailed and intricate the work is. Much respect to those that do it.
  22. been a while since i started this journey. Added a smoker to the equation and yesterday I made a 5 pound batch of breakfast sausage and a 5 pound batch of snack sticks. I used my jerky gun with a sausage attachment, and can foresee a stuffer in my future. Wasn't super difficult, but a more time consuming having to reload every 1.5 pounds. And a good workout for the hand. Both batches were made with LEM kits which include the casings and spice mixes.
