  1. i think if you gave a quick description of what it was, it wouldn't have been as shady looking. We've all seen these fake facebook and forum posts from hacked accounts. that's all.
  2. setup a target. start close and move back. bb's are cheap. we're not talking .308 ammo here.
  3. start buy reading some of the longer threads here. Get a subscription to new york outdoor news, full draw etc and avoid the outdoor channel. Those hunts are not realistic and take place in other parts of the country and many of them are ranches/farms. In New York there is plenty of state land, but it is indeed pressured. The best thing you can do for private land is ask. If declined offer to lease for a fee after you scout it. Hunting is hard and there's more to it than just sitting in the woods with a gun. 90% of it is good prep work, add 5% skill and 5% luck. Keep is simple at first and avoid calls and mock scrapes etc.Put in your time. With time you will learn from your mistakes. A lot of guys here have been hunting their whole lives and they're still learning. If you have a family or friend that hunts see if you can tag along. This really helped me when I dove into turkey.
  4. you're never going to get me to just blindly click a link from a site i've never heard of. i'd advise others not to as well
  5. couldnt agree more. I think as hunters of any game we get sucked into the latest and greatest. scentlok, under armor, faster bows and straighter arrows. I think any beginner should stick to the basics. If you become hooked on turkey hunting (i sure did) then upgrade later on. Nice thing about hevi13 is you can safely shoot out to 50yds.
  6. agreed. I had this guy from Brighton and I'm out looking in the country. He'd show up in his suit with shiny shoes and I'd bring my muck boots along. I let him know first and foremost location was my biggest concern and that you're not putting me in a track. He started wearing his jeans and sneakers the second trip haha. x2 on homestead as a good site. I used mostly zillow though and just set land filters, but be careful because there's some small acre property out there that backs up to nice parks or farmland. But dont bank on that as "huntable" ask the neighbors before you commit. as far as $300k, what I meant by that is we found homes in tracks on .5 acre plots with neighbors on both sides and in the back in the $180 range that were very nice and modern. but a house i buy has to pass the "can i pee off my deck and not have anyone looking at me test". The same house on 10acres was generally $300k. Found an awesome piece of property on 26 acres and another on 42 but both were from the 1800s and never updated, however in the $150k range. Both needed at least 100k in upgrades and 20k of that was immediate safety/comfort needs. If my wife was patient and able to deal with that, i'd have gone that route and upgraded as we went along but she wasn't. haha. as far as brush goes. We've killed more big bucks in the bedding/transition areas than we ever have in the hardwoods. I think there's a common misconception that the hardwoods is where it's at. And maybe so during bow season but on heavily or moderatly pressured land they avoid the hardwoods like the plague. Only downside to brush is it takes a lot of prep work to get a stand and lanes in. Plus, my 6 died in the most horrible patch of briars this year. Had to literally cut him and a trail out
  7. here is the actual link for those that use firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ i believe chrome has a version too.
  8. The DEC can say all they want. A good lawyer will suck that up in a heartbeat. I see it all the time in my line of work.
  9. 1. i don't know. i'm not an administrator, but their opposition to the youth hunt is still there on the site, and while I don't agree with them, they did change their stance on that matter. 2. http://www.newyorkbo...plishments.html this is the problem with the current firearms debate and the fiscal cliff discussion. If anyone does compromise and decides to be the bigger man, than it's a sign of them giving in, or knowing they're losing. It's comments like that from people like you that make it so hard to do anything in this country because whoever makes the first move to compromise is made to look weak. Could you imagine if the NRA came out and said they would agree to some magazine size reduction? People would jump ship to a more radical pro-gun organization. What if the republicans compromised on the tax discussion and hit the wealthy harder instead of increasing everyone's social security tax? OMFG! They failed us! etc. etc.
  10. i always chuckle when people from the city "area" refer to anything above the city as "upstate". Unless of course you are actually looking for a club in the Adirondacks or Syracuse
  11. it doesn't leave a mark. the website just hasn't been updated. get over yourself.
  12. they updated their petition to the governor. i cannot retrieve it anymore because the bill expired. the website must be outdated. In fact I think I posted it here somewhere.
  13. google adsense sure does. that's how they make money. it's not spyware but it is a little creepy .
  14. i've yet to see someone debating against elderly/handicapped.
  15. if you're new to hunting i'd avoid tom decoys all together. In my opinion they're better suited to good calling experienced hunters looking for the big bird. A Tom decoy can actually deter jakes and other tom's. I'd suggest a jake and hen and practice calling. then practice calling some more. primos makes a good dvd for turkey hunting that helped me out a lot. comes with a free mouth call although i did not care for it http://www.primos.co...eos/mta-turkey/ this is new. might be worth a shot too http://www.primos.co...alls-made-easy/ i found the box call easiest to master. There's a good forum out there dedicated to turkeys but its national and you become overwhelemed and people are hunting different birds than us. i wont post it b/c that's probably against the rules. but i went overboard bought a harrison hootin stick and crow locater calls. they're worthless. Bought a $75 pure gold choke for my 835 and a $100 mueller reflex. The reflex was worth it, but i'm not sure how much better the choke was then the stock. I do however recommend the hevi-13 shot and a good vest. Dont skimp on the vest. you'll be sitting on your but for a while and you should be comfy
  16. 1. not with the autocockers 2. there is some truth to your last statement. But the fear is that more of the "weekend warrior" "deer camp" hunters will be in the woods. While it's true that there's a handful of clown bowhunters out there too, the quite and peaceful bowhunting where you hardly ever encounter another hunter would be at risk. yeah, yeah, yeah i'm an elitest etc. etc... There will be less than a handful of new hunters added if xbows are approved. all it will do is bring current gun hunters into the special season, so I dont want to hear about us being endangered and that xobw's will save our sport.
  17. doesn't tell me my vote isn't counting. appears to accept it every time. So unless you're the administer and know for a fact it's filtering than there's noway of knowing.
  18. lol exactly. i know at least 6 people i work with that are not NYB members who disagree with xbow's during archery. Remember there's a membership fee. I'm not here to make another thread 7 pages long, I just wanted to point out that it's not "well past the debate stage". Plus i saw quite a few polls having Romney win the election... i'm pissing my pants right now. I had to hit "vote" 3 times for it to take when voting NO. hahahaha.Oh and guess what? You can keep voting as many times as you want! lollolololool
  19. the word "used" in that definition would include any garden shed or barn so long as the neighbor goes out there even once a year.
  20. some nice deer east west and south of the city. as mentioned getting land access will be your toughest challenge as most parcels have established permission rights. Buying it is not so easy either. What I found is that any house with at least 10acres is either $300k+ or has a shack sitting on it. good luck!
