  1. unbelievable... http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2013/01/22/shooting-reported-at-texas-college/?hpt=hp_t3
  2. i'm not positive, but i was told it doesn't matter if you're a shotgun only deer area, you can still rifle hunt. maybe someone else can chime in.
  3. the issue with bb's is that at a distance or to the uneducated hunter it's not so easy to spot. 18 years old, 3rd season in the woods i shot what i thought would be a delicious small doe. Very small nubs. I've seen some bb's with big mounds on their heads. I think antlerless is tough to inforce because it's hard to determine for the inexperienced hunter. And then what do you do when you take an illegal bb? In turn, I made this same point with wny... what are the ARs? spread? points? i for one rarely count points when my heart is pumping and I'm ready to take a deer. Generally I take a quick look at the spread and you can tell. I would never vote for ARs for youth. Doesn't PA have this or something similar in place?
  4. looks like I have a fan. This is the first sub 8 point I've taken in 7 years. I told you why I took it. It was my 3rd morning in the woods, the wife was already getting cranky. Sure, I didn't have to take him, but I did as it was legal. I can totally control myself. Do it every year. I took this deer because I could and I did. by the way. Spell check is your friend. Use it bud.
  5. delicious. I've certainly been busted drawing more then raising my gun. Is there anyone who hunts equally with both instruments that has had it the other way around? Don't they have to take the course to get their tag anyhow? i sure hope there's not a loophole there where the bowhunter has to take a course but the xbow hunter does not.
  6. there is nothing better in deer hunting for me than late october bow hunting. The rut is on, the deer aren't running only into the wind because of the guns going off, there's a lot more wildlife around, it's warmer and it's more challenging and therefore more rewarding to me. I do wonder as well, if when my son comes of age if he will even want to learn to shoot a bow, or just take the xbow up right off the bat. My real question, and maybe there will be answer that will finally get me over to the other side is this: Excluding elderly and handicap; why would a current non bow hunter start hunting archery season if crossbows were legal? A good answer there and you'll get me over to the dark side.
  7. dude you cant possibly believe that. Raising a crossbow is the same as drawing and then holding the draw? it's like raising a gun with a bigger footprint
  8. im going to mostly stay out of this from now on, but I disagree with this. An instrument that is being pushed mostly because it'll increase numbers and allow disabled and elderly to use it must offer some advantages no? Why else wouldn't they just be hunting with a re-curve or compound? You can't have it both ways. It either offers advantages for those that can't use a compound or it wont increase numbers because it doesn't offer advantages. For the final time I'l add that this should be added during archery for elderly and handicapped. But why will more people start hunting during archery if it's challenge is the same as that of a compound? Non bow hunters will go out and drop a grand for a crossbow now? If they wanted to during archery they would have already bought a bow.
  9. that still reads a little funny to me, and this is just a comment and I'm no expert obviously but "big game season" and "special archery season" seem different to me. Why not just spell it out. and in addition, it only "adds authority" it doesn't make it regulation.
  10. that's the argument though from anti-AR. I never see any deer, you cant stop me from shooting the few deer I do see. My standards are not yours etc etc. Nothing you did was illegal and nobody said it was. I wouldn't have shot the BB, but that's my choice. The discussion was... should it no longer be legal? And if ARs were in place state wide would it help or hurt whitetail hunting? That's the debate.
  11. A broader range indeed http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7396832n
  12. bad parenting is all that is. thought handguns were almost impossible to acquire in the city anyhow? must be we need better laws... oh wait.
  13. you didn't answer my question. You claimed the ARs hurt your season and that you were lucky to get a bb late. I'm assuming you're a meat hunter first and foremost as am I. So did you pass on doe or just not see any? if you chose to sign your tag over that's your decision, but I dont want to hear that you couldn't get a deer because of ARs. Maybe next year one that you passed on will be a nice shooter buck. If it was late season and i needed to fill my freezer i'd take a nice taking 120lb doe anyday over a bb or a scrub buck. Good luck.
  14. doesn't matter. it's liberal nys. i did everything you mentioned and will continue to, but this is the state we live in and we have to accept that. Now who wants to marry a dude?
  15. not every manufacturer will, but some will. You'd be dumb not to spend a little R&D just to redesign a mag. Supply and demand. I know i sure hope something happens as I go to claim my permit in February. As far as I understand it you can still buy the gun, just not the mag. So drive to another state and load up. regardless all revolvers are still legal.
  16. Iowa, Missouri, Kansas etc. Plenty of states with big bucks and cheap land. My boss from from Kentucky owns 20 acres and he says that's tiny for down there.
  17. sounds good. Why doesn't it mention rifle though? can you not use an xbow during open season in rifle areas? Or is it just the fact that in those counties you can use a rifle or a shotgun so it doesn't matter?
  18. i think it'd come down to serial numbers. I'm sure those will be required when registering. Generally I bet if it was built preban you'll be safe. But post ban and you're really just admitting to a crime.
  19. I can't tell if this is just reinstating crossbows for regular and late season or includes archery. I will leave my opinions out of it, just curious.
  20. and that's my point. Is 100's out of all the hunters in NYS a good number? I don't know, i'm asking the question. An old mature buck is a 3.5 or 4.5 year old. There are not as many in NY as there are in other states. Asking hunter to pass on nice healthy 2.5 year old is where i personally draw the line. If we go too far noboby shoots anything and that's not the goal. A 2.5 year old is generally a nice shooter buck (i understand by my standards, but others it may not be). We're still arguing over who is anyone to tell another hunter what he or she can shoot? I bet this argument was rampant when seasons were originally put into place. Many hunters then hunted for food, now they're being told when and how many they can shoot. I only view ARs as the next evolution of the sport.
  21. from what i understand the law specifically spells out detachable magazines. We will find loop holes, one already being discussed is that tube fed guns of any capacity are not listed here. Just a matter of time before a manufacturer or accessory dealer figures out the loop holes. Then it'll just be a matter of time after that congress bans the loop hole... they fixed many of the current ones with this bill. And in all honesty, minus the assault weapon "scary looking gun" ban and the magazine limits not much else bothers me. It'd be nice to buy cheaper ammo online and sounds like the checks for ammo will be a hassle but it doesn't end my world. But now how am I going to buy a legal handgun that isn't a revolver? i dont believe so. My reasoning is that a semi-auto shotgun doesn't have a detachable mag, but a thumbhole stock is still illegal. correct. to my knowledge even a semi auto tube fed rifle doesn't have a capacity limit. ha that is kind of funny, but i believe it has to have one of the other banned characteristics. But you're registering your handgun on your permit anyhow... so i'm not sure it matters other than for future sale. And in that case, just remove the accessory.
  22. wait till you knock her up. Plan it around deer season and you might be ok. Mine was conceived during gun and popped out 2 months before bow the following year. Not great timing.
