Who wants Yearling Buck Protection with ARs in their area?
Five Seasons replied to Meat Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
reeltime, I appreciate your experience with ARs in PA, and I cannot speak from your viewpoint. But you mention the good ol' days and property that wasn't posted etc. I'm sorry but that has absolutely nothing to do with ARs in your state. That is common across the country and is the result of private land disappearing, more hunters, less farms and lawyers. Secondly, your bucks per square mile is 3rd in the northeast and your total buck take has increased from 2008. In addition the 5th highest take of antlerless deer in the country. And if it's really all just about meat... isn't that all that matters? Finally, I do not see a lot of dissension among hunters on this topic. We may stand on separate sides of the fence and a few people on each side take it to far but I think this is more a matter of philosophy and hunting style that some people disagree on. I do not see this as something the anti's cheer for as many QDM states have seen license sales increase since 2008. I see that may not be the case in PA but with any of these statements or statistics you have to realize there are many variables in play. I doubt it was any one thing that caused license sales to drop in PA. I was blown away at pictures of some of the deer I saw shot there this year on a coworkers phone. I love the "if you don't like it move" argument. We should all do that in NY now that they're infringing on our second amendment rights. Why should we ever stand up for what we believe in or lobby for what we feel will benefit our sport?- 320 replies

i hope that wasn't directed at me because you cant quote me as saying that in this thread. In the crossbows threads however... i refuse to believe that someone who has hunted their whole life sees a trophy in a spike horn. My grandfather of 82 with cancer is still in the woods and will shoot that spike and he has every right too. But it doesn't go on his wall with the other 7. But again, if you didn't read my whole post, I am accepting of different standards for youth, elderly and handicapped. and in addition, statistically in time chances are that 1.5 is now a 2.5 or 3.5 year old instead.- 320 replies

who is looking down their nose? who is claiming to be holier than thou? Your "dad in-law" will eventually see those smaller deer become bigger deer and statistically he may have increased chances of seeing a bigger buck. Just as I have argued with xbows, i'm in favor for handicap/elderly and in the case of AR, youth being held to different standards. i suggest everyone spend a little time reading and the report helps you analyze the statistics, but if you'd only like to glance, go to page 7 and see how as yearling kills decreased over 3 years, mature buck kills increased. That is simple fact that requires no degree to understand. http://www.qdma.com/uploads/pdf/WR2012.pdf- 320 replies

I know some guys who only shoot doe and never see bucks. Primarily they shoot the first deer they see. This year and countless other times I have not shot the doe and had the buck follow. Same can be said for passing on the smaller bucks. Tag out early with the 6 point and you may never know what may have come your way. I agree that you have to challenge yourself or you might never see the big guy.- 320 replies

everything you say is true. I suppose I should mention, that while I've been hunting for 13 years, only 5 of those have been with bow. I have not really put the "big 6 point" self imposed rule on myself until last year, and then given circumstances i scrapped it this year haha. However, all those deer were bow and the neighbors only hunt with a gun (and someday a crossbow ) so who's to say they wouldn't have? wny, your buddies deer poses an issue. So maybe beyond the ears qualifies? But then there's a real nice thick 2.5 year old basket 8 who wouldn't qualify. So now you're asking hunters to count points which really isn't fair and can be difficult with the adrenaline pumping. I mean... we still have people shooting other hunters for God's sakes.- 320 replies

I dont understand your point. We do have serious acreage in 7J. Still nice to increase your odds. In 8F we do not settle. It would take too long to explain the opportunities we have every year and some break our way, others dont. We've had bow strings snap, mounters not present shots, turkeys spook deer, monsters come in at dark etc. There is always an opportunity, sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you dont. 60 acre spot last 4 years (30 hunted by us in 8F) all bow except 1 gun wall mounter 8, real nice basket 9 small basket 8 2.5 year old nice 8 5 point, 7 point neighbors and friend took real nice deer during some of those years as well, and those are just the ones we know of. Again, I'm not upset or overly passionate on the subject, but I have a neighbor that shoots everything. They bring friends and family and post 7+ people on a 15acre plot. Sounds like Baghdad on opening day and usually why we only bow hunt 8f. they shoot absolutely everything and have no issue hiding it. We wonder how much of it's legal as they butcher in their barn. It's almost sad. So the opportunities are always there for us, but it becomes disheartening to let the 1.5 year old go in hopes he grows up and then when he heads north and you hear 3 shots (for some reason they can never shoot once) your heart sinks... the area has had tremendous genetics and excellent food sources . Recently though it seems the genetics have declined. This year, how many 5 pointers do you know that weigh 150 pounds? A bunch of weird racks on the cams too. 4 years ago my mounter 8 only weighed 130. idk... totally agree, but that's why the discussion is focusing on changing what is legal.- 320 replies

Phade, In our family of about 7 hunters there's a nice mounter taken every year in 7j. Between my father and I in 8F it's probably 1 every 3 to 4 years. As far as skill, I have a lot to learn, especially in archery. I think that one particular point is the one reason why I dont jump all in on AR. As most would agree that any bow kill is a good one and with everyone you take your experience and knowledge increases. I guess it comes off as selfish when we talk about neighbors not shooting small deer as they legally have a right to. In my family we've made the big buck top 10 a few years. We're good hunters and I wholeheartedly agree that skill plays a tremendous part in taking mature bucks. But they still have to go by you. I will add we don't have a single food plot in any of our hunting areas.- 320 replies

and i agree with you. I'm actually not that passionate about the subject. If there was a vote for it, I'd vote yes for ARs, but I don't lose sleep over the matter for the very reasons you just posted. I think the BB upsets me more than the 1.5 year old haha.- 320 replies

Who wants Yearling Buck Protection with ARs in their area?
Five Seasons replied to Meat Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
i know it seems hypocritical but i couldn't be picky this year with the birth of my son. He was still a nice 150lb. deer. And 15 seconds later out stepped a big 9, that a lot of hunters would have harvested illegally because you just dont see those deer everyday. Had there been ARs in place I wouldn't have taken him and I still kick myself a little because of what did end up happening. My issue is that the land i hunt is heavily pressured and chances are he wouldn't have made the season anyhow. This also was a bow kill, not that it matters. so like I said in my post above, to practice QDM, AR etc. you need everyone in the woods participating. My father is the ultimate QDM and every year a few people in the family bring in the bucks he passed on...What's the point at that point?- 320 replies

I know a lot of hunters. Most are "if it's brown, it's down" and even the most uneducated hunter already knows that if he and his neighbor pass on that buck he will be bigger next year. The problem in NY is that unless you own a 1k acres it's hard to practice QDM as your neighbor will just shoot the deer you pass on anyhow. totally agree, but when you talk about bucks and "mature doe" there is no way to really size them up from the stand and know what's legal or not so you have to draw the line somewhere. The hope is too that the 2.5 year old is also smarter and less likely to be taken out of luck like some of the dumb bb's i've seen wandering through the woods. 8F and 7J- 320 replies

wtf are you talking about? nobody said anything about food plots. This discussion has only to do with not shooting the little guys. If you're a meat hunter, there are so many doe in the woods you basically trip over them. I have never made any attempt to hide the fact that i'm a horn hunter. So long as I have some venison in the freezer, I am absolutely out to shoot the biggest, baddest buck in the woods and if you had a nice 10 standing next to a 1.5 year old doe, I know you're shooting that 10 so I don't want to hear it. I spend a lot of time and money to hopefully get a chance at a mounter. When you fish, do you hope to catch a bunch of little guys or do you hope for a few slobs?- 320 replies

i would venture to guess you really dont have much of a difference, but that you're experiencing the flight of your arrow differently because of the light. There are many illusions created by light.

that's probably worth some money. Doesn't the asian culture break them down and claim it as an aphrodisiac? heard of a taxidermy in cuse being robbed for this reason. I know a guy that trained his dog to shed hunt. Very cool.
