that doesn't appeal to me in the slightest and it's not even the money. I enjoy the challenge. The scouting, the prep. The time in the woods getting ready for the season with my dog is almost as enjoyable as the season itself. It's never been about the big buck for me. It's the time in the woods with my thoughts and enjoying nature.

Who wants Yearling Buck Protection with ARs in their area?
Five Seasons replied to Meat Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
congratulations you can copy and paste. My point is that your 10, 20 or even 100 acres you hunt is not a relative sample size. I made this same argument with reeltree earlier in the thread. Your own personal experience does not equal reality across the state or even in your own WMU. I've moved trail cams 1 tree over and had 10x as many pictures. I've had tracks in front of cameras and no pictures. I knew a guy that put his trailcam 6' in the air and wondered why he never got any pictures. I'm not stating you're doing things wrong with your scouting, I'm simply saying that the State's DEC's research performed by professionals in their field is "the best" we have to go by. And research and data are in favor of ARs. Lets say we see 50 real monsters taken in this state. Of 200k hunters, is that really a good ratio? I don't know... I'm asking the question. To me it's not so much about the NYS Top 10, it's how many real nice 2.5 year olds are taken? Another question. Would you rather shoot 1.5 year old bucks 8 years in a row and then land a mounter? Or shoot a nice respectable 8 every other year?- 320 replies

New NY Gun Law Fact Sheet
Five Seasons replied to WingNut's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Year of manufacturer no longer matters. All pre-ban 10+ mags are illegal in a year, period. Any 10 round mags purchased before Tuesday are legal, but cannot be sold or transferred within state and can only be loaded with 7. As far as effective date, I understand it to be immediate. But the cops and gun sellers have not been given any guidance as they normally would have had it been put through the normal process and not rushed. -
New NY Gun Law Fact Sheet
Five Seasons replied to WingNut's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Received this from a friend. Might help clarify for some people FACT SHEET NEW YORK’S NEW GUN CONTROL LAW *This is a summary. It is not exhaustive* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The legislation (S. 2230) passed by the legislature and signed by the governor contains the following key components of significance to law abiding gun owners and pistol licensees. Redefines and Bans “Assault Weapons.” An ‘assault weapon’ is now defined as any semiautomatic rifle or pistol capable of accepting a detachable magazine with ONE military style feature (folding stock, pistol grip, thumbhole stock, second grip that can be held by the weak hand, bayonet mount, flash suppressor, muzzle brake, compensator or threaded barrel or grenade launcher); any semiautomatic shotgun with ONE of the following: folding or thumbhole stock; second grip that can be held by the weak hand; a fixed magazine in excess of seven rounds; ability to accept a detachable magazine; A semiautomatic pistol that can accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following: folding or thumbhole stock; second grip that can be held by the weak hand; capacity to accept a magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip, threaded barrel, barrel shroud, weight of 50 oz or more when unloaded. Within one year, all “assault weapons” under the new definition (pre-1994 and now pre-2013 semi-autos as defined above) must be registered with the state police at no cost. This will trigger a NICS check. Current owners may transfer these semi-autos only to a dealer or sell them out of state. Intentional failure to register will be a class A misdemeanor. Unintentional failure will trigger a 30 day grace period to register, after which the gun will be confiscated. Knowing possession of an unregistered assault weapon will be a felony. The law does not distinguish between rimfire or centerfire firearms. Even .22s are covered by the law. Exempt: the following are not ‘assault weapons’ and are not affected by this law: bolt action or pump rifles and shotguns; antiques; revolvers; semi-automatic rifles that cannot accept a detachable magazine; semi-auto shotguns holding five or fewer shotgun shells in a fixed or detachable magazine. Magazines. The law bans all magazines in excess of ten rounds, including “pre-ban” magazines of 20 or 30 rounds previously possessed lawfully. High capacity magazines possessed lawfully heretofore must be disposed of out of state or to someone authorized to possess them within one year. Ten round magazines are grandfathered, but it will be a crime to load them in excess of seven rounds. Magazines older than 50 years old – curios and relics – are exempt. No new ten round magazines may be sold or possessed in New York. Pistol licenses. All pistol licenses will have to recertified (not renewed) every five years. Licensees will have to confirm to the state police that their information is current and that their registered pistols are still the only ones possessed. Pistol licensees will be able to request that their names be withheld from public disclosure, and state police will compile a statewide database of pistol license holders. Ammunition. All ammunition purchasers must undergo an instant background check at the point of sale when the new state check system takes effect. This provision does not take effect for a year. A buyer of pistol or revolver ammunition will need to show a valid NYS pistol license and a driver’s license. Internet sales of ammo are banned except in the presence of a gun dealer where a NICS check is required. Gun sales. A NICS background check will be required for all private sales of long guns in New York, except transfers to immediate family members. Gun storage. The new law requires the safe storage of guns in a house where the gun owners knows someone in the house is mentally ill, prohibited from possessing a gun, is a convicted criminal or subject to an order of protection. -

yeah this was point too. I think this was only the result of the scary black tactical shotgun... probably the best home defense weapon there is. To be honest, the thumbhole/pistol grip turkey gun is the first real thing to impact hunters. Although your buddies guns aren't illegal they do have to be registered. so dumb... -

i wouldn't call it a fight. A healthy debate with a few people who refuse to see the others side is more like it. If anyone on here thinks their opinions and posts will change anything than that's just silly. I'm hear to kill time and learn and I believe that to be true for most.- 320 replies

ALL 10+ SHOT MAGAZINES ARE GONE
Five Seasons replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
your currently owned handguns and guns are not illegal. to comply, you may only load 7 rounds in a magazine and register the longguns. The law does not address tube fed guns so they are still legal. The issue is going forward... most popular handguns and certain rifles are illegal. Reality is though, those guns you own that can no longer be sold will eventually be sold out of state or confiscated as those are your only legal options. The only confiscations that will take place are pre-ban 10+ round magazines. You have 1 year to sell out of state or hand them in. -

I'm awake. what should we have done that you believe would have made a difference? Honestly made a difference. And 3 months ago and 2 years ago this was not an issue during campaign season either and had it been, the overwhelming liberal majority would have voted the same. -
and a war it would be if it had happened in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, etc. Whether we like it or not, O'Reily made some good points last night. Let the states make their own laws, but the federal government should stay out of it. We happen to live in a state that is not pro-gun and will never be. We are a big minority. As Americans we have the right to still have certain firearms should we decide to move. I don't like this option as my family is rooted very deep in this state, but it does allow an American the freedom of choice on where they decide to live depending on their beliefs. This can be expanded to gay marriage, marijuana use etc. I'm not advocating we lay down and take it, but we have to face the reality of where we live. Most of us are upstate new yorkers and decisions regarding legislation/taxes etc are largely made with the cities best interest in mind and not ours.

it's not illegal to own, it just must be registered and cannot be sold or transferred within the state. future new sales are what is illegal. -

correct. In theory though, you can also no longer buy, sell or transfer a 10 round mag... so in theory they will all be gone in 60 years. -

hmmm i was thinking the shotgun pistol grips and thumbholes were exempt because generally they do not accept a magazine... didn't see that section. don't have one currently, but that's dumb. I know a bunch of guys that turkey or deer hunt with very expensive guns with thumbholes or pistol grips. wtf does a thumbhole even do to promote mass shootings? -
eh, it's just a company trying to make a buck. The same reason they release a new bow every year that's 3 fps faster than the last. Oh and I love the charger and despise the prius, but I have a hard time buying that statement.

Ammunition question
Five Seasons replied to Fletch's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
good luck finding anything that isn't oddball. -
there are other ways, we just haven't figured them out yet. it's day 1. relax for a minute and take a deep breath. But really the best thing currently is to vote the right individuals in. Cuomo may think this inked his ticket to be 2016 president but he has no idea how different the rest of the country is from NYS. There are many, many pro-gun democrats that will remember this.

not if it exibits the characteristics. there are 0 mention of calibers in the bill The bill bans guns that meet all three of the following criteria: o are semi-automatic, o have a detachable magazine (in the case of pistols and rifles), and o have one feature (two under current law) commonly associated with military weapons. those features include forearm rail grips, pistol grips, etc. (yes all they did was describe a scary looking gun and ban it). -
we've already discussed this. most of that money pays for conservation and preservation. We only hurt ourselves by sacrificing something we love that will change nothing. All you do is give them a reason to take the rest of the guns as there are obviously no hunters in the state that need them... and boy would the animal rights people love it!

many still use them and nobody is asking them to change. But it is funny how those that don't adapt and learn the new technologies and methods created by my generation are stuck in the past or claim them as dumb. I sure wish we stopped trying to better ourselves and improve things. We'd still have dangerous cars, people would still be dying of polio and I'd need an antenna to watch b&w tv... My 2 year old nephew plays games on my brother in laws iphone just fine...
