  1. I'm just getting started! I wasn't home the first weekend and the weather has been crap but last weekend was ok and I am looking forward to this weekend and the last. This is the best part of the season if you ask me!
  2. Ran short on time due to Mothersday breakfast but we did see the same Tom I worked last Monday heading thru the same spot towards where we just were. He was 30 yards from the road gobbling and strutting with his hens. One of these days I'm going to have time to wait him out lol.
  3. Im trying to wake my 13yr old up, rain is pushing out here but it's a wet one. I don't have much to look forward to for birds but you never know. Nothing shaking yesterday either.
  4. Just imagine the smell if he cooked him in the crotch pot after.
  5. Spotted a flock acrossed the road on the backside of one of my spots so I decided to go around and try to wait them out where I can hunt. Well I didn't wait long enough because when I circle back around at 10 they were in the bar way I had been through 30 mins before. So I went back in again but never caught up to them. Very skiddish birds leads me to believe they have been hunted and harassed. Also it was dang windy making hearing impossible for me. Not bad for a first official trip out.
  6. Baked scrod for her. We are seated at the table that JFK proposed to Jackie.
  7. Fois Gras at the Omni Parker House. More to come.
  8. Breakfast today at the North Street Grille in Beantown. Also had the shortrib hash which is so good.
  9. It's too bad they don't use modern things like social media to promote such things. Like Facebook and stuff....oh wait they do! Lol Seriously, there are tons of things the DEC promote and do. You just don't know about them because they use different methods to reach the age range that uses them.
  10. If you looked there are plenty of programs geared towards getting kids and adults outside through the DEC. Hell they even make taking the course required to hunt super easy now. If you knew where DEC's money went you would know a good portion is sent to making it more inviting to go outdoors, hiking trails, boat launches, camp grounds, Pheasant release programs. I guess its just easier to be negative and dismissive than it is to take part in growing the sport. (In general terms not member specific terms)
  11. NY sells @5-600,000 licenses a year, we are packed to the brim with hunters compared to other states of similar size. Coupled with less room to hunt, do you think maybe the decline is not as bad as some say it is or maybe natural to some extent?
  12. I'm not sure where you get the idea that youth turkey season was created to recruit new hunters, although it is a good way to start any new hunter out, it is not what it was intended for. Have you ever thought of giving back to the hunting community in any way? Per the DEC. "The Youth Wild Turkey Hunt is an excellent opportunity for junior hunters (ages 12-15) to spend time afield with experienced adult hunters gaining the necessary knowledge and skills to become safe and responsible members of the hunting community. We look forward to the great stories and pictures we receive from young hunters and their adult companions and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable hunt"
  13. Good shootin Tex! If you use the BS happy ruler and scale it comes out to 24 pounds, 10.5 inch beard and 1.5 spurs. Nothing doing here but I only went out back for a short hunt, might try again tomorrow. Coincidentally I saw zero birds in my travels today.
  14. I will be out in back of the house off the roost then off to work. I won't hit any better spots till I can go with my son which will be the second weekend. We are heading to Boston next weekend. I did get some cam pics out back and I saw some around the corner this morning. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to kill one here.
  15. I call very softly to let them know I am there then ramp it up a bit right before fly down. Then do my fly down and a couple soft yelps. The idea is to be the first bird he hears so he might come check it out or if he is with hens they might come check it out. With a henned up bird I try to call the hens in with softer calls and feeding calls.
  16. The 870 I passed on to my boy this week and my freshly patterned A-5. Throws a nice pattern with the Carlsons Long beard choke and XR 6's (40 yards) The 870 has a plain Jane Remcoke XX Full and also throws a good pattern.
  17. I should add that killing hens will have a very small impact on over all numbers too, I just choose not too.
  18. I don't feel there are any negative effects of "too many hens", it all can change in a year, wet spring and too much snow wiped birds out around my house. That and an increase of predation, Raccoons and Fisher mainly.
  19. "Finally, hen survival is the major driving force behind turkey population changes. To better understand what is happening in NY, we will be conducting a large scale study where we band hens, radio-collaring some, to determine seasonal and annual hen survival and mortality. This should provide insight into the role of predation on hens, as well as the possible impacts of hunting mortality during the fall."
  20. Grow and let em grow, here is some more good info. http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/nyturkeyresearch.pdf
  21. I don't know any one that hunts with their kid one weekend and then stops. Seems like you are trying to find a reason to be against youth hunting. Refer to my last post in that case.
