  1. Son and I put a few miles on this morning. Found the same tom from last Saturday but he was henned up and not interested in me so we attempted to cut the distance down. Made it close and got busted. While there I looked way out acrossed the valley and spotted another strutter so we went back to the truck and drove around closer. We still had a mile to cover and two creeks to crosss. Made it across one creek and we were trying to set up in a thorn bush when we got busted. That one would have been damn near impossible to get due to the terrain and second creek. No where to hide. Back at it tomorrow for one last hunt, this time around home as we both agreed we don't want to walk 5-6 miles again. Lol And my wife and daughter were smart enough to stay home today.
  2. We only name some of them, Snowwhite because she's a white leghorn. Then we had an Elvis cause he was a hunk of burning love. He left the building last week in the purge. We have Big Red who is a Bantam Roo. Had a Donald at one point, his comb flopped over which turned into me calling it a comb over which led to thoughts of Donald Trump. Sweetpea the hen turkey. Tater the Tom turkey. Brownie, because shockingly, she is a brown hen. Had a cool looking one named Checkers because she had a crazy color pattern like a multicolored checker board. She escaped and something got her one day. Thats all I can think of at the moment.
  3. I'm waiting on a small Turkey hatch, I have a couple of chicken hens doing the brooding for me. We did some candling and things look good on four of them so I might try and hatch some more too. I think I am skipping the game birds this year because we have a vacation planned for July and I don't want to task someone with caring for our regular flock of birds and a pile of Chukkar. After that we will doing 100 meat chickens in two batches of 50. I have found that raising and caring for birds is great for the kids and I really enjoy it too. We run a variety of chickens, 3 ducks, two turkeys and one Banty rooster that keeps all of em line. We had a mess of other Roosters and I finally had enough of them last week. I am considering adding Guinea hens to the mix to free range for ticks. Last summer we had 120 birds at one point, fun.
  4. I will be out for the grand finale this weekend with the whole crew, son, daughter (8) and wife. It would be something to get one with the whole crew!
  5. If you like ugly guns with plastic stocks.. http://www.browning.com/products/firearms/rifles/bar/current-production/bar-mk3-stalker-detachable-magazine.html Browning makes a gun for all tastes. Lol
  6. No go for me and my aching back, pulled a muscle getting my mower unstuck the other day and with out my son to go I ain't so motivated to push myself. Id like to thank my wife for making me move 250 pounds of chicken feed and 9 bags of mulch after I told her I hurt. Lol
  7. Wait I though the get together was the 21st, son of a...... looked fun.
  8. He said Union flag, not Confederate. So did you see the 35 Star Union flag from 1860 on many many trucks and a camper or two. Ok back to the regular program.
  9. I'm flying solo tomorrow and I laid eyes on one a half hour ago heading to his roosting area I hope. At least tomorrow will be close to home, today was 120 mile round trip.
  10. My son told me it was his best hunt ever which made me reconsider my frustration of not getting him one. He said it was a combination of the Toms, stalking the hen and the over all scenery that put it at the top of his young list. That made me smile and it put things into perspective for me.
  11. Stumbled into another Tom. We were so close that I think we spooked his hens without knowing it.
  12. Worked that bird for two hours. His hen circled and then he busted me as I was resetting the decoy and our set up. Depressing. Now we relocated far away.
  13. LB on his way in to me and my boy. Cross your fingers.
  14. Sounds like my morning, one deer didn't like me and the other didn't seem to care. Luckily the angry one left before the birds came in. I have a couple Toms I have been figuring out. The one we can kill this weekend so long as no other guys park in between us. I'm saving him for my son. The other I don't think is going to happen because he has no set pattern. He was in a small highly visible field last week right next to a couple of houses and the road. Almost like he knew he was safe there. I have seen that darn bird all over the area in a mile or two radius. I am guessing that was the bird that gave me the old two gobble salute as he left this morning.
  15. We raised some last year and after butchering I had to go get a couple more because I enjoy having them so much. My Tom gobbles and struts all day and I get a kick out of making him gobble. And it deff helps improve my calling.
  16. Had 5 gobbeling on the roost, I suspect the bigger one was the one farthest away only gobbled twice and left. Then the 4 Jakes were going crazy and came in to 50-60 yards. I decided to take one as they followed the hen away and took my shot at 50-55 yards. He hardly even flopped with the XR 6's. Fun hunt to say the least and my first bird in 4 years as I gave it up for a couple of seasons and spent last year trying to get my boy a bird. His quest continues this weekend.
  17. Hammered a Jake to teach the rest of them a lesson. Bastards.
  18. Oh boy a whole mess of gobbles. Maybe 3-4 Toms?
  19. I got one pegged for tomorrow, he finally has stayed in a field I can hunt for more than one day.
  20. Check it out, last year you found one on nearly the same day!
  21. Number of times Trump has golfed since taking office @15 weeks ago....19 Number of times he has attended Church....1 (Easter)
  22. You never disappoint! Congrats on another fine bird.
