  1. talking with the hunting community I'm around most were against 1 buck limit. many said the same thing that 1 buck would kill their season short by eliminating any opportunity to take more than 1 buck. they didn't seem to like that. area is now under voluntary QDM with ARs but before that most said they'd be fine with ARs as long as their neighbors were doing the same. the option for no change i don't think will get much support.
  2. out of everyone sitting at the table last night we knew of only one who got it. if they distributed the surveys broad enough and at random, then 7000 is enough. talking with some who has experience with similar surveys, they said the results at that point won't change much at all if they up it to say 70,000. we'll see how things pan out.
  3. i think the 7000 that were sent out are sent out. if you haven't gotten it you probably won't.
  4. last night i had a deer biologist confirm to me that going to (1) buck WON'T work well enough to be biologically sound. also i think that'd just aggravate hunters by eliminating opportunity regardless of what's in front of you.
  5. i use a Bore-tech coated one piece rod with a bore guide for all my rifles. the rest of my family thinks "I've got too much time on my hands." and "I worry too much". some of them miss deer often and i rarely do. so i just shrug my shoulders and do what i do. i can get all my guns to shoot anywhere from sub-MOA to a single ragged hole. ... i think all the little stuff does add up.
  6. yup pull it straight out. forgot to mention that.
  7. i have them for rifles and shotguns. they're good to carry upon the rare case your muzzle ends up into the dirt. i always run it through with hoppe's cleaner or Hoppe's Elite oil. never dry. always breech to muzzle. use them for a quick cleaning but depending on how much you shoot the gun you'll have to go back after a while and give it a good cleaning to remove copper and lead fouling. after a while for shotguns you'll go back and clean the bore to a mirror finish. they work good and for the hunting rifle or shotgun that's shot a handful of times a year they're awesome. they're machine washable but I've always washed them with detergent by hand. then you let it hang and air dry.
  8. why CCI stingers? hot stuff like Remington Golden Bullets, CCI MiniMags, Winchester Wildcat, and other hotter stuff are more prevalent in places like Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart. Also you get them in bricks of 300+ rounds instead of sleeves of 100 rounds or less. It's around just keep looking. Harder to find standard velocity (1100 fps and under) target ammo for us who shoot competition.
  9. the whole blade surface is sharp on mine by design. no need to sharpen them. I on occasion use hell razors too though as I use them with my recurve. I don't and have never sharpened the back sides.
  10. I've also seen better halves have a say and use a very slightly darker color paint and a sponge to dab make tree silhouettes in the background to create depth and a cool look. the color was very subtle though and I'd imagine you need to be a light artistic. I'd think it's just a reason to give her a say with the space without ruining your man cave.
  11. problem with knotty pine on whole wall is light from the windows and age will discolor the wall compared to what sits behind your mount or whatever else you've got hanging on the wall. So if you shoot more critters and have to shuffle stuff on the wall you might be scratching your head after you move stuff.
  12. yea I've seen tan walls, knotty pine, white walls, best trophy rooms I've seen go with cultured stone or knotty pine about 48" up the wall, trimmed, and then the remaining GWB painted a forest green or similar color. the antlers and mounts pop but it's still natural feeling. wood up the wall shouldn't clash with your hardwood floor if you've got one, as don't pick so they're completely different.
  13. we saw it when it came out that night. our experience was the same packed theater, silence during, and silence after. only until all the way out in the lobby did people quietly say it was good. one guy tossed a soda into the trash and when he said "excuse me" he was all choked up. then another brushed shoulders with me also on the way out and was the same. I've seen a bunch of movies with Bradley cooper and this didn't even seem like it was him. way different than the normal characters he portrays. thinking back it was more of a story with no shoot'em up action movie feel to it at all.
  14. The For the purposes of opposing ARs because a younger say 1.5 year old buck tastes better I'll respond. I've processed my own and others since I was old enough to shoot one. Before that I helped family. I've talked to professional butchers that do deer and world class wild game chefs I've met at shows. They've all said difference is negligible between older 4.5+ yr old deer and yearlings. All other stuff has more of an impact on quality. Did it die quick or stress the night? Was it cooled soon and aged? Where on the deer was the shot? Was the cut on top or below when the deer was hung? Is it the right cut for what it's intended for? Did you cut it right? A minute left on heat could be the difference between the best thing you've ever had and the worst depending on cut and what you're making it into. Now compare a 1.5 with a 2.5 which is how much the ARs will probably effect things and you'd be full it crap. Just what I've found and heard for whatever that means to who reads it.
  15. passed a lot of bucks. took a 5.5 year old doe with a bow early season. later in the season I took two doe, one 3.5 years old and one over 8.5 years old.
  16. depends a great deal on where you are. we've got TWC internet and digital cable with sport package that includes Outdoor and Sportsman channels. we'll watch a couple movies a month too and that usually comes to $120. We have Amazon Fire TV now too and watch included free stuff on there.
  17. I've got an engineer mind so I've really only read one, but I've got no complaints. Strategies For Whitetails by Charlie Alsheimer. seemed like it had lots of useful factual info. Haven't read more of a story with heart, sole, and emotion kind of deer hunting book.
  18. whether it's fortunate or unfortunate we never end up in your situation phade. we rarely have a buck live long enough. we're mostly judging bucks 3.5 yrs old and below. from what I've been told and seen of others history with trail camera pics is definitely a must. Charlie Alsheimer did an article on a buck and it peaked at 6.5 or 7.5 and then started to go backwards. by 12.5 yrs old it look closer to a yearling with a weird oddly shaped rack. awesome and heavy looking deer. maybe some year in my lifetime i'll have your situation. lol
  19. yea all my 2nd opinions live and hunt locally. In all honesty I probably use them for convenience but even say here compared to the fingerlakes halfway across the state is a big difference probably. you see the difference in Quality Whitetails magazine "Age this" section, where deer are aged from all across the country to the point it makes you shake your head and laugh at the differences.
  20. I'm others and myself relate to that. life seems to always trump hobbies or recreational pursuits.
  21. I don't disagree with the last 2/3 of what you said and understand where you're coming from. I've heard some crazy and ridiculous deer "facts" trying to learn all I can about this stuff. I've also seen harvested and aged 4.5 year old deer go well past 150". I don't speak for others but I say "most likely" not based on a half ass idea. I've learned a lot on how to age deer on the hoof from sound sources. also I tend to send pictures off to others, trusted biologists included, that give me second opinions. not all biologists can age a deer and not all people who aren't biologists are just throwing out guesses into the wind. my statement was based on aging harvested aged deer and aging on the hoof with trail camera photos and field sightings, both by me and others. if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and true professionals tell you it's a duck... then damn me to hell, but I think it's a duck.
  22. You being a past, short term, QDMA member just means you get some aspects of it and knowledge. I haven't been apart of QDMA for too long but involved in QDM for longer. FourSeasons uses QDM on his deer farm to help bucks make the most of there selectively developed genetics. many everyday deer hunters use QDM to get bigger antlers where they hunt, outside a fence. others use QDM to hold more deer within the land they hunt. 11,000+ acre co-op I'm a coordinator for is mostly about balancing the herd with little focus on "wall hangers". mindsets have advocated letting every doe walk and shooting bucks no matter the age. we had a boom in population but now seeing numbers going way down. almost all bucks got shot off every year leaving almost nothing to breed doe. we've got fawns with bright white spots in late September. fawn recruitment/survival from year to year isn't good. woods are bare and taking heavy abuse whether mature timber or not. so the area is now using voluntary QDM with ARs to get the herd back in check and let the habitat recover. with us being rifle, our current plan, and with the current mentality of the hunting majority the bucks aren't living to see 3.5 yrs old and won't anytime soon unless landowners go above and beyond. you can say QDM can be about big antlers but to continuously imply that big antlers is the main focus of QDM is just not true. True and basic QDM goals are met when a healthy balanced herd that's in check with its habitat and sustained with predation (human or other animals) and other natural causes of death. QDM is not QDMA and QDM beyond what I said is whatever you choose to make it to be to meet your goals.
  23. yea i'll back this.... I've only seen a couple 8's that were most likely 1.5 years old from my observations. more common to see 6 pointers here with a 7pointer here and there. definitely not abnormal to see a basket racked yearling.
  24. that'd be my down fall. anything over 3.5 years old and I get pretty fidgety with an itchy trigger finger.
  25. judging by the body he's 4.5 years old or more. I'd take a chance that he probably has more than the minimums. smart deer by coincidence though. lol
