  1. yup... I'd say that's the #1 misconception around here and a big reason why people won't do it. people don't understand that it's also about habitat management too. maximizing the holding capacity of your land is a big thing that's pushed I've learned. one thing I would almost like learn how to do but don't have the time right now are trail cam surveys to determine deer density and harvest numbers. before that i've got other stuff that takes priority and makes that a difficult task. I've realized are holding capacity is significantly less during the winter than in warmer months. we've got many ag and pasture fields that produce big tonnage of food, but once the winter gets here we can't sustain the same number of deer, which then travel a little elsewhere.
  2. I know I said that but one has to consider what I said in text of my other posts. I continue to make efforts to share what I know with others who at least have listened to some of it. some people time and time again will disregard everything you say. it's not that I don't care they won't listen so much as I don't care to put more or more effort into telling them what I know when they've had a continuous track record of ignoring it. no one wants to waste effort and 'spin their wheels' with a person like that. my efforts are better suited passing info onto someone new that may listen. you're right we as hunters do at times "play defense". I would say I'm pretty good with sharing info. I have been with the neighbors for some time now. I figure if I tell them about the biggest one I can find it'll give them a reason not to shoot a smaller/younger buck. everyone is linked. "it's not you, it's the neighbor on the other side of me that won't to QDM, so I your neighbor I'm out." I hear ya phade.
  3. where are you all getting that private party sales aren't included into the SAFE Act? just from the phone call to the hotline or from the text itself? I asked some instructors last night who are pretty knowledgeable with all this stuff and they agree private sales of ammo are illegal.
  4. yea they are expensive to run and keep up. I would keep mine stock for the most part and they'd live longer. the best thing is the custom genuine bolts that hold them together. after a while of losing one here or there you learn to check them all. shocks too....seems like I was constantly replacing or rebuilding shocks.
  5. haha... pros sometimes change bows more than underwear. bottom line is they all work.
  6. well no. he bought them at Woolworth's so I'm sure they can change the DL. lol
  7. this would be small scale more private and not a conference for NY branches. it's more like some people wanting to start a co-op or practice QDM under the QDMA's help. those people getting their neighbors and surrounding land owners together to say here we would like to do this, but listen to what this QDMA person has to say.
  8. that's one fear I do have but only time will tell. as long as you're hunting some where else i could care less if you believe what I've learned. I can't and don't want to force anyone to hunt a certain way that should be a personal choice. that said I'm not going to hunt my parent's farm and let anyone outside the immediate family do what they please, that's just silly and wasted effort.
  9. I'm pretty sure it's going to be QDMA associated and not just people getting together for deer management. yea there's the Upper Hudson River Valley branch that covers this area but I don't think there are any co-ops started in Rensselaer county yet that I've heard of. I'll find out and try to keep you posted. I've just been informed this was going to happen.
  10. So my brother got our dad's snowmobile back together. I don't have my own anymore so it's been a few years since I've really been on one much at all. It was a blast. I miss it and should get one someday when I don't have important unknown important expenses coming up (like my first child). I've been flying around on them since I was 3yrs old. Even raced and have trophies from those very young days too... somewhere stashed away. HAHA... I really shouldn't have rode it. to think we've gotten all this snow too.
  11. I still don't get it. so i'll have to go look at the law text I suppose. FYI I take an answer from the NYSP SAFE Act hotline as law no more than asking a kid riding his bicycle down the street. I know multiple gun dealers who have called that hotline with questions, multiple times with the same question, and gotten different answers.
  12. because unless you're registered with the state you can't sell ammo, at least to another NYer. that's Penal law around section 400 or so. so what I'm saying is when I hear of some a guy that knows a guy that's selling 22LR ammo for a ridiculous price out of the back of his truck to some guy that hears he's got ammo, that is illegal. I'm not sure what the rules are about selling it to someone out of state.
  13. in the past I've been looked at as a knowledgeable hunter and that's all. when I've tried to educate some what I've learned from experienced deer management people it's like they don't believe me because it's not what they've always been told or thought. I'll explain tooth replacement and charateristics to tell them it's most likely a 1.5 yr old buck and for future reference it probably shouldn't have gotten shot. then I get told I'm way off because it's got 6 points and therefore a 3 year old buck. it gets me angry as heck inside because I feel like it's hopeless. I'm an engineer. science and data is my life. I don't just pull this stuff out of my rear. hopefully now they'll listen and i'll learn more too with this meeting.
  14. ... I guess it wouldn't be an actual QDMA branch meeting, but I don't know for sure.
  15. it's in Hoosick Falls (west Hoosick) in rensselaer county NY.
  16. I was told someone will be there to talk and answer questions. not sure if it's someone from Washington county QDMA co-op or an actual QDMA speaker. it's specifically held to get involvement down around here with multiple owners of contiguous acres that would add up to more than 1000. so I think it's really both.
  17. that is a nice one. really good mass it looked like. definitely a mature buck I'd imagine.
  18. I was told yesterday by my dad that he was asked to attend a QDMA meeting with some neighbors. It's taking place next week. hopefully this is a step in the right direction for many around us. I'm assuming they're wanting to get a co-op going. All of us together make for enough contiguous acres.
  19. Remington Golden Bullets to me are junk. One should understand that I say this, because I shoot NRA bullseye 22LR pistol matches. it's rare that one doesn't go bang. however, I see some bullets seated in the case poorly and from round to round you will hear difference. the "pop" sound isn't consistent because some are a little hotter and some a little lighter loaded. They shoot minute of squirrel 24/7, 365 days a year. Dick's Sporting Goods around here had them Friday morning. One store in Latham was sold out at 8am and they open up at 9am. People were lined up at the door. They only got 6 boxes in so they pulled the first six into the heated vestibule to wait and told the others sorry. Then the Albany store had several 333 round Winchester boxes in. Once they opened the door everyone stayed in order, single file at the counter. they handed one box to each person until they ran out. Store opened at 9am and they were sold out by 9:02am. I think that demand will come back. Centerfire pistol and rifle ammo is already showing back up in stores. the average squirrel hunter is now buying a few bricks instead of just one for fears they'll run out and have a hard time getting more. the main reason though is many people, some that don't even have guns, are buying up bricks when they find them and then reselling them. it's cheaper to do this with 22LR then centerfire. same thing goes for the doomsday nut/hoarder that thinks he/she needs and can actually shoot several thousand rounds in any given weekend. I've heard of a dozen people doing the reselling thing and it's just wrong on top of being illegal. there's one way to stop it though. don't buy it from them! if you stop buying it from them they'll stop doing it. it shows up here and there so there's no reason to spend $0.20 per round on 22LR.
  20. sounds like it was legit... if they offered up the video footage. the flash came after the person trying to enter drew their gun. we'll see.
  21. HAHA... try being an NRA bullseye competitor and look for specific 22LR rounds like CCI Subsonic. it's alright for practice but all this high velocity stuff kills your bullseye game. you shoot one handed. timed firing at each target with the last requiring you to shoot every 2 seconds at a bullseye 0.90" in diameter. right now the slowest consistent stuff I can find is CCI Tactical AR but they're still almost mini-mag velocity. I'd like to find stuff under 1100 fps.
  22. I don't have pictures but I've gotten knots (bulb like bulges in tines) crooked or bent over tines. my uncle shot a nice buck that would've been a perfect big 8 but it had a spike on one side that went up, not even out like a beam. gotten lop sided racks with twice as many points on one side compared to the other. my biggest buck is a typical 8pt with a long 2"+ sticker coming off the back of his left base only. my other uncle has a true main frame perfect 10 pointer with all 1" tines and about 10" beams. lol
  23. yea I guess you don't need it for small game or turkey according to the regulations guide on page 14. it doesn't directly say that but it's obvious enough.
