My Nikon Omega works pretty well using the BDC or not. it doesn't get much better, it being your standard 3-9x40mm scope. whatever it is you pick you want it to be dependable and hold its zero. muzzleloaders can have a bit of recoil. more of a push than kick but there can be a lot there.

Yesterday it was nice so I brought out a new bow I picked up. It's a leftover 2013 PSE Bowmaddness 3G that I setup up with a QAD drop away rest and HHA single pin sight with the geared dial. I'm liking the setup and it should work good for outdoor 3D's this summer and as a backup hunting bow. I shot some at 20 yards and quite a bit more at 60 yards to get the yardage dial tape figured out. I'm a bit rusty from not shooting this winter but I was shooting 5-6" groups at 60 yards so I think i'll shoot a couple more times to verify the settings and then get the right tape on there. thought about shooting farther and just measuring the distance around the dial and comparing the tapes. maybe that'd be even more accurate then their number system. if you've used this sight, are the actual tapes that come with it pretty accurate that far out?

good deal. looks slim and lightweight enough.

my parent's Yamaha Grizzly 400 4x4 has tires that aren't that old. they're bald as heck though. I had a difficult time getting up on the hill to do some scouting and deer related work. didn't have that much snow that day either. -

QDM Meeting with Neighbors

just couldn't help yourself. remember, nobody's bashing one group or the other. here's something to think about. sure bucks are inherently going to be more likely in an area with CWD. by their nature they're more frequently coming into contact with another deer, a deer that could have CWD. however, they talk about prevalence in the herd being the driving factor. well if bucks are 2 times as likely to have CWD when compared to doe, yet we have 4 times the number of doe compared to bucks where I hunt which is not good. that means where I hunt would have twice as much CWD prevalence in the doe herd. that's why that study says both must be considered. you just bolded the text until you got to the "but..." we don't know EXACTLY how it spreads would be accurate. Certain means through which it's transmitted is known. this is a major reason the DEC doesn't allow putting out bait or minerals for deer at any time during the year. you can't read only the lines you like and then you got to think about what you read. none of this stuff is a one size fits all sort of thing. even here within NY areas are different. you got to take what you learn and see how it applies to your situation. -
don't forget to count the occurrences in the post I started about having a meeting with the neighbors.

Is it legal to target practice in my backyard
dbHunterNY replied to faust1578's topic in Bow Hunting
definitely a problem. shouldn't have been shooting in that situation. also as said neighbors need to give you permission. it's one of those things you can get away with but shouldn't continue to do. tough but that's the answer. -
good work and good deal.

I wonder if he uses a hole saw to core them too. lol ...we're getting dangerous now.

hard to tell from the video but I'm thinking and it maybe looks like a small wood drill bit. saw this on facebook lately.

QDM Meeting with Neighbors
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
well I certainly don't want deer to get CWD in this area, but thank you for the well wishes. -
yea really? I know a lot of gun only hunters on both sides and they all wouldn't vote for Cuomo if they were bought, let alone with their free will.
-
done that on many occasions... hardest time to hunt is the best time with a gun. opening weekend the deer are running around so much it's hard to get a good buck to stop or slow down enough to release an arrow. lol once things settle down after the first week it isn't too bad.

a lot of great posts. this one seems right. that said a large fence with captive deer for study aren't necessarily a deer farm like some others are. I'd like to experience it with an open mind so I know and can say I'm weighing in with first hand experience. I've known a few others who have done it on one occasion. I'd never pay the going rate and it'd have to be a massive tract of land within the fence with lots of cover and a sanctuary. none of the 200 acre fenced properties I've seen with most being field are ethical in my opinion.

QDM Meeting with Neighbors

i think there's a lot of open questions right now and we should wait and let FourSeasonsWhitetails (Mike) have a chance to respond as to not be over burdened with questions. -
way to go. looks like you're starting to get a collection. I haven't made a valiant effort to find sheds but even so I've only found a couple ever.

QDM Meeting with Neighbors
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I assume the questions were rhetorical and you weren't insulting my brain power and implying I've got aphasia. if you're saying they would then be doing nothing to fight this disease, then that means you would only know about male deer contributing to the spread of CWD. All the other procedures, regulations, and practices science has learned about the spread of CWD doesn't apply? I mean there's a lot of it, all the way down to how to hang your deer as to inhibit the migration of prions that cause CWD to other parts of the carcass and meat that will most likely be traveling across the country side. you said in this thread yourself that hunters, and I'm sure this includes those educated by the QDMA, are a big part of whether or not CWD spreads too. So is what you said that hunters could spread CWD is wrong or what you just said in your last statement about QDMA wrong? so outside the fence you use QDM to produce the biggest bucks instead of shooting the first male deer you see, when to your knowledge you knowingly could be contributing to the spread of CWD outside your fence. why is it not a problem for you to do it but you've got a problem if QDMA was to support it? ...I should probably add this. I'm ignoring the fact that you just said "CWD is doing nothing in any state by any means to hurt the wild population." I'm am because you're the one that brought up CWD as an issue. so saying it's now not an issue after this whole time of arguing with people, I have to think you just meant to type something else. -
QDM Meeting with Neighbors
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I understand you now. it was clouded with the talk of mature bucks again, when really you and others think the issue is about QDMA thinking that any buck should walk. Yea I've read articles on their site and other stuff. I can't say I've read stuff in the forums where that info you posted came from though. Just published articles or those put on their site. I'm not sure anyone would agree with the stance you feel they should take to be honest. I think the QDMA wouldn't be liked at all if they said you as a hunter doesn't have a choice in what you take and that you must take the first buck that presents an opportunity, regardless of what it is or what you think about it. I know you don't do that, because you've said earlier in this post that you're after the biggest buck in the woods. no conservation efforts I know of ever target a game sex with no discretion once so ever. that to me would be something driven by fear more than anything. many relevant entities, such as the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance, have said not to have this attitude as it inhibits understanding of it and further work toward finding a solution to it. it's said right in their video series they've got on their website. -
QDM Meeting with Neighbors
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
hahah.... no I don't have to really do some research on CWD before I post about it on a public site. I've done some and what I found was what I posted. if I'm wrong it's ok. if you're wrong, it'd still be ok. science evolves as things change new findings happen every day. that's why we're encouraged to be grown men without attitudes who discuss important aspects of what we care about. we're allowed to talk about this stuff in public. so, if you can blow so many holes in my words and thoughts then tell me. specifically what was wrong with what I said based on what you've researched? so what you're saying is we'd help the spread of CWD by shooting bucks before they mature? what age is this? ...about your question. yes, so far I do support what QDMA is about, based on what I was told in the meeting. they didn't really discuss much about letting bucks mature so much as to keep enough bucks alive to get a good ratio and structure. they actually said that a mature buck is 5.5 years old as it reaches it's peak between 5.5-7.5 years old, in which case I agree. They said you definitely could get bucks that old but it's not too likely even under QDM. -
QDM Meeting with Neighbors
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I'd like to think that we all can come in here and discuss the original topic without issues resolved in a quick manner. The idea of forming a QDM co-op with direction from QDMA and what I learned and what was discussed in relation to QDM is the topic of this discussion. That said you right in that QDM and it's relation to CWD is probably warranted to discuss, but without it continuing to be the main focus of discussion in the thread. Thorough discussion of a specific topic within QDM should be started as I feel this thread should just be an overview of QDM. Let me try to give some incite to your question. Whenever deer are put into a situation of having more physical contact they more likely to spread CWD. It doesn't matter which side of the fence the deer is on either. It'd spread quicker in a deer farm setting, simply because there's more deer for a given space. I would think that's why you take so many precautions of a preventative nature. That said so many factors go into the spread of CWD in a deer herd within any setting, including the absolute fact deer are very social animals with an uncontrollable tendency to come in contact to one another, no matter what age or sex. It is my understanding that QDMA promotes a decrease in overall population that many areas now have in order to sustain a healthy herd of free range deer. Fewer deer within a given area would prohibit the spread of CWD. Letting male deer live so that there's a sufficient population to contribute to a short breeding period helps yield earlier born fawns healthier and more capable of surviving in general. To go to an extreme, without the male population there obviously wouldn't be deer. Without a sufficient male population a herd can't reproduce quick enough to rebound from a severe case of CWD. I have no doubts that science has determined male deer big contributors to the spread of CWD as it's in their nature to come in contact with more deer compared to a doe. However, I believe that the benefits of a well structured healthy herd out weigh the risk of having one of many aspects that may spread CWD, if it were to appear within a herd. Also CWD is a natural disease... it isn't bound by any rules. I think there's still a lot to learn to the point that blaming one entity for the spread of CWD and the death of a majority of the deer population is ignorant. for anyone to bash deer farming or for you to continue to say deer farming will be the demise of QDMA, has no merit to this thread. Equally, for one to continue to make passive posts with intent to give those who read this thread a negative understanding of one or the other is not condoned in this thread. as the original poster of this thread this is what I expect of it, which is beyond contestation. -
I think generalizing the bowhunting population is unfair, as it would be to throw gun hunters in. I can't say that deer get wounded more with a bow than a gun. that's coming from me hunting in both a rifle zone and bow only zone. I understand where you're coming from in saying the deer are less pressured and wary during bow season but you're absolutely wrong saying bowhunting isn't a challenge. especially so if you compare it to gun hunting. most of my gun kills have been close enough they could've been done with muzzleloader, shotgun, or rifle. there's more movement and the coverage AREA is insanely less with a bow when compared to even a shotgun. it's all a personal choice, and no matter what weapon we use to take game we use it with skill, discipline, and respect for the pursued game period. Despite we need to be true to ourselves in realizing the challenges with each weapon vary, to not humbly respect another hunters choice would disrespectful and bad for the American tradition we all love.

don't over call. if a deer is coming toward you don't call to it. if it's walking away, sure try it out. I grunt and bleat mostly. I use contact grunts probably 75% of the time. 20% of the time probably use a tending grunt and/or bleat(s). then on rare occasion I use a roar or snort wheeze. basically tell a story and what they want to hear. if a buck comes through with it's nose to the ground and a couple doe came through then grunt like you're two doe. that sort of thing. you can change the sound with your hands.

come on. those first two sentences are said with common sense. that's not allowed here in NY. also yes 10 in the mag and 1 in the chamber is legal.
