  1. early season setup (gun) full strut tom or jake, one or two feeding hens, and a submissive hen laying down. the submissive hen is just an upright hen with a short stake. strutter and submissive hen close to one another 10 yards out and off to my right side. the hen is closer to me with the strutter facing me. the other two feeding hens are heading toward the strutter; one straight out 4 yards and the other at 45degrees out from the strutter. as a right handed shooter I set with the limit of my swing at the strutter with the decoys behind it. the idea is a big dominant gobbler will I'm calling in will come around to get ahead of the strutter decoy. he'll see the submissive hen and come in straight at me to get around to face the strutter decoy, get at the hen, and put a beatin on the strutter decoy. his attention is off to the side toward the decoys. before he swings around he should be close enough to drop the hammer on him good. early season setup (bow) bow setup is similar. feeding hen out 10 or 11 yards and off to my left slightly. a strutter is straight out another 4 yards and then a hen off to the right 4 yards from there. the idea here is to wait still until the tom swings around to come in and face the strutter decoy. once he turns and quarters away, you draw and take the shot. this setup works well at the end of a peninsula of cover into a field. a gobbler can then come into the tom straight and along cover, feels more open and they won't hang up from being claustrophobic. lol late season (either) I don't use decoys much. turkeys can't see them in late May from growth being too tall and they've seen a lot of them by now. I usually run and gun but may use a jake or hen to draw attention away. clucks more than any cutting unless I see the bird's fired up still. visually blind setups work well at times. they can't see what's on the other side of the knoll or around the corner to fully assess the situation with a wary nature. I used this to get a tom within five steps. he came around the corner and through the bar way. he had another tom in tow. before the second tom cleared the bar way 8-10 yards away the tom right in my lap started putting. it was too late for him though. I shot and he didn't even flop once.
  2. using that golf ball trick requires a hide still warm. if it starts to freeze you'll tear muscle tissue and ruin cuts of meat.
  3. cool videos. it's tough to self film and it goes to show how much a good solid fluid camera arm is needed.
  4. first two pictures are yotes and the third is a small fox. I don't know how people are seeing ears eyes nose and other stuff. that set of balls some are referring to I think it just a tuft of fur. seems the imagine is too dark to pick things apart up front. in my opinion if that was a cat, that's one massive beast of a cat in both pictures.
  5. looks like he's already got some age on him. if he doesn't get bigger he'll get gnarlier that's for sure. I'm thinking he's at that age he could blow up but who knows.
  6. I think you'd still be hard pressed to find a new gun for that light money, even and H&R Handi single shot. Jump to $400 and you've got lots more options. Probably needing to find one used.
  7. I tried using the spacers that came with it and the normal quiver mounting holes however the quiver seems too far forward and makes getting it on and off a tight fit to the parts of the sight. there's a few brackets out there that go between the sight and bow riser. they extend up and backwards, with a multiple holes for mounting your quiver bracket.
  8. anyone out there have an HHA optimizer lite ultra single pin bow sight (one with the dial instead of the sliding bar) with a one piece quiver mounted on their bow? there's a few options out there that I've been looking at. not sure which way to go. I'm thinking I need to buy a bracket though. I'm trying to get it mounted on my hunting bow, a '11 PSE Evo.

    Squeaky Bow

it's under warranty so I'd take it back to where I bought it and get it repaired under warranty. I'm guilty of not reading through this whole thread but enough that I've assumed he took it back.
  11. not sure where everybody is getting stuff either. every part of the law as it's written applies with the exception of background checks and reporting through the NYSP, as the system isn't available yet. ammo cards and proving you've got a gun for the ammo can't be implemented unless the law is changed or it becomes a specific store policy. for example by law you don't need to show a pistol permit to buy 9mm or 357 mag because rifles, long guns, exist that shoot them. however, if you go buy ammo for them at Walmart or Dick's they'll ask for your permit; store policy. that's my understanding. ..."muzzle break" (lol!) and 7 round limit from Skretny's decision being a gray area exception too, as technically the ruling only applies to the 2nd circuit western district of NY. however, other districts and authorities have stated their positions respecting his decision on grounds of ethics or legally covering their butts.
  12. yup should've definitely stocked up within reason before now. I've stocked up on a 223 Rem Black Hills varmint round, a Fusion 30-06 deer round, and a specific CCI 22lr round. the 22lr is 1200 fps which isn't ideal for bullseye pistol but at least I've got all the same stuff. I couldn't and still can't get a hold of standard velocity 22lr, except for ridiculously priced Eley. Midway had cases of standard velocity Norma 22LR in stock. Could've ordered that if not for this whole law issue we've got and Midway closing shop to NY.
  13. what machinist typed is what I'm thinking too.
  14. AR would be nicer for fast follow up misses or anchoring shots but for a bolt gun.... looks great! that'll put a hurtin' on them I'm sure.
  15. that was generalized I know. you've got it though, voting record hardly tells a lie. I simply think people use the terms too much to answer a position on something without doing research. if you think about it, those terms are subjective and differ with each person's idea of it. sometimes by a little other times by a lot. a voter should know where a candidate stands on this gun stuff before voting. not just general election either primary's are even more important. a party will back and push for someone to win a primary because they know they have a good chance to win, they might fit the mold mostly but not necessarily completely. if the issue you care about is their exception then it doesn't look good.
  16. ...didn't mean the hijacking. same concept in posted applies to crossbows and other stuff. politicians Cuomo included will take credit and support anything they can at the right time to survive. if they truly cared anything about it, they would've pushed things sooner. win over archery folk to offset gun folk, outside of that he could care less about a crossbows existence.
  17. haha... FYI I've grown up around politics and if you use the word right, left, liberal, etc. you are ignorant! politicians will usually support what/who they will to survive and remain in office. the label doesn't mean crap. being an educated voter that actually does their homework and votes is what counts. heck Rensselaer county is as pro-gun as any yet the general voting population bought into the hipe of Kirsten Gillibrand was for guns. She endorsed by the NRA and rode the image to win for congress. then after she made it out of the county she's a US Senator for NY voting against guns every chance she gets! Don't be fooled by those who jumped the SAFE Act ship due to backlash. Vote for those that were with us the whole time or we'll get bit again.
  18. Yes please vote... if don't you might as well sell off all your guns. it will be like walking on thin ice or a ridiculous pain in the butt just to own them with these people still in office.
  19. FYI.... three co-workers who all are recreational shooters or hunters, had no idea about this part of the SAFE Act and I've had to explain it to them today. Day's not even over yet.
  20. ....or a incredible kid gets turned down for some community or scholarship award, because somehow it gets out that he/she's got a criminal record. all that because years ago at a young age he/she was plinking cans with their dad on the grandparents' land with a 22lr with 8 rounds in the clip. DEC or NYSP happened to drive by and they thought with Skretny's decision up to 10 rounds was okay anyway. Who would know?!?
  21. yea that lady, Lou, at crossgates Dick's is always helpful. I've been there many many times. I thought it was part of the law that a dealer may only charge up to $10 (obviously charging as much as they can). That long island dealer mentioned charging $70 will probably be looking at lawsuits or most likely a letter from a customer via the attorney general. the fall out from this SAFE Act hasn't even begun yet. Try imagine standing behind a counter at Walmart or Dick's and explaining to an innocent yet ignorant old man or woman who hasn't been up on this stuff what's going on. Go ahead tell them that 50rd little box of 22LR ammo, they want to dispatch the squirrels from their bird feeders, is instead of $2.99 more like $8.99 plus the $10 fee for a total of just about $20. They'll be upset and won't understand no matter how much you try to explain. Better yet the money poor guy, that could careless about owning an assault weapon and kills the limit of deer every year to feed his family, just showed up. Unlike the mostly passive old folk, he's full of p*ss and vinegar. You tell him that the normally on sale $15.99 green cor-lokt box of ammo is now just about $30 and he's got to wait 30 minutes at least to fill out forms and do a background check with the NYSP. All while the transaction's started so he's hooked and his wife with his kid or kids are wanting to go somewhere and getting very impatient. Now this happens all day and the person behind the counter doesn't even own a gun and has had a horrible day at work. They're still in a crap mood but now complaining to their other half about how the SAFE Act sucks in some way shape or form. I can think of a lot more people with screwed over situations to show up at the counter too. Imagine that effect and how much the peoples' eyes would open up then. I wonder what the person, who states "it's just registering a gun ya got. big deal.", will say now.
  22. fighting with him will get you nowhere. sometimes i'll setup a dummy stand where deer don't go much but then on my side i'll rake trees myself and make fake scrapes. He may see the sign and setup right there. then if you can use a climber in the original spot. I've used this a couple times. heck if you know he's that rude pretend to be an ignorant good neighbor and tell him you've moved your stand and half heartedly about all the "sign" you've seen.
