Governor requesting Compromise on Crossbow Bill
SteveB replied to SteveMcD's topic in General Hunting
100 to 1 is impossible. Actually 4 to 1 is close to impossible also. As many as 1/3 of those "doe" you see after season could be button bucks who will be 1.5 yo for the next rut. And by season's end, the remaining bucks aren't running around in open fields to pose and get shot at one last time - they have gone nocturnal or to ground. If you truly think that there are 50 does with no bucks and want to kill all the does, where are the future bucks going to come from? -
Like Doc says, far less then 1/2 the state - fortunately. That said, hopefully there is a substantial fine shooting a deer illegally.

Sounds OK to me Just kidding - I still think 2 seasons total - 1 gun and 1 bow. -

No actually. Most - SZ - would be happy without the placement of more early special gun seasons (other then an early youth weekend) in the early bow season. Bow (SZ) lost the best weekend of the rut a few years back. I can't remember any changes (compromise) to the regular season that has limited gun only hunters. And I personally will never ask for one - just no more intrusions on the early bow. -

2 seasons - Bow for all bows. Gun for all gun. Simple isn't it. -
Didn't see it - what happened?

You need the correct spine (deflection or stiffness) weight rating to match a bow's spec - which are draw wght and draw length. The 400 on your arrow is what is called the static spine. The dynamic spine is how that arrow reacts from your bow when shot and is influenced by static spine, arrow length, point weight and center shot. Then you need to be sure that correctly spined arrow will give you a finished weight equaling minimum 5 grains per lb of draw weight - higher will hurt nothing. As others have said, no one can recommend a heavier finish weight arrow without knowing a bows specs and the weight of the tip/broadhead you wish to use.
-
I actually shoot my recurve threw one a lot. When I cam keep the speed difference to 2 fps or less, I know my draw length is dead on consistent.
-
I know several that love to hang a stand in the morning and hunt it that night. !st time thru for the deer.
-
At ease when it smells the human scent of the boot?
-
Then that would be an attractant/curiosity scent - not a cover. Can't imagine a deer wanting to follow it any distance.

Anyone Doing Any Hog Hunting 'Round Here?
SteveB replied to Felonious_Monk's topic in General Hunting
I live and hunt near the Cortland border in Cayugas cty. Know of probably 35 to 40 people who have killed one in the last several years. Everyone kill was a target of opportunity that presented itself when the hunter was hunting something else. Not one I have heard of has been taken by someone entering the field to hunt a hog that day, In other words, there a few around but pretty much impossible to successfully target. -
Ping pong ball weighs 47 grains. 1/2 lb rock weighs 3500 grains Comparing the 2 is like comparing a 300 gn arrow to a 22,200 gr one! I stand a pretty good chance of hitting my target with a 300 gr arrow (I shoot 4 to 500). Only way I hit something with a 22,000 gr one is if it is underneath me and I drop it.

Deer process multiple scents at once. You cannot hide one odor from them with another. Put fox pee on your boots and they will smell boots and fox pee.
-
Now Steve - that would be a 1.5 buck. Only ok to shoot if it is a 6 pt or better.

Summary from the file Larry posted: Summary: *The pilot AR program substantially reduced the proportion of yearling bucks in the harvest, and harvest composition shifted to older bucks. *The number of 2.5+ year old bucks in the harvest has increased since implementation of ARs. However, the increase has not fully compensated for the reduction in yearling harvest, and total buck take has generally remained >20% below pre-AR levels. WMU 3H was the only unit where total buck take has returned to the level immediately prior to AR. *A shift in sex ratios of deer observed in the pilot AR units was apparent, though a similar shift was observed in neighboring units without ARs. *ARs had no effect on hunter participation for the majority of hunters, but overall participation by non-local hunters appeared to decline because of AR. *The impact of ARs on hunter satisfaction was mixed. Satisfaction with buck-hunting was generally higher in the pilot AR units than the surrounding region, but similar increases in buck-hunting satisfaction were observed in the surrounding region as occurred within the pilot area. More hunters in the pilot AR area reported being satisfied than dissatisfied with the level of protection afforded to young bucks and with the level of safety they felt in the pilot area. However, a majority of hunters reported being dissatisfied with (1) the number of antlered bucks compared to antlerless deer seen, (2) the number of older, larger-antlered bucks seen, (3) their opportunity to shoot larger-antlered bucks, and (4) the number of older bucks compared to the number of young bucks seen. Seems like a mixed bag at best. Certainly not the overwhelming success with majority reception that a few claim it is.

Probably the only mount I would ever consider if given the chance.

Talk About Butt Covering
SteveB replied to Early's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Pretty sure the Amish pay property taxes. The only thing they don't pay is FICA, but cannot collect either. A few groups in the country are allowed to opt out. -
What current proposal it that? I am aware of and have posted the one from several years ago.

I was surprised by Paul Ryan's speech

Let's see Jim and sog spin that. -
Personally I will probably start shooting a lot more bucks. Instead of passing the several 1.5 6's and 8's I do every year, I'll start shooting a couple because the AR supporters say it's good management for everyone in the state.
-
The doe - if I am free to choose. Would let the 7 walk even if there was no doe. But if they make AR mandatory in 7J, I may take to shooting the 1.5 6 and 8's (that I now choose to pass) just because.
-
Let's just have one weekend total - then we would have huge bucks everywhere. Better yet - one day for 2 hours - 7 to 9 am.
-
3pts, 1pt, 4pts/per side - what is the difference if they are all 1.5's?
-
So if he was a 1.5 6pt (or even a 2.5 - still not the "adults you hunt) instead of a 4pt it would have been better?
