Had to be from a Deer Farm, right?
Four Season Whitetail's replied to moog5050's topic in Deer Hunting
More facts, info regarding chronic wasting disease Lydia Lohrer, Special to the Free Press1:58 p.m. EDT May 30, 2015 Getting behind what chronic wasting disease is, its impact and what's being done in Michigan (Photo: Eric Seals, DFP) 27CONNECT 2TWEETLINKEDIN 1COMMENTEMAILMORE Chronic wasting disease ■ Chronic wasting disease is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that affects black-tail deer, white-tail deer, mule deer, moose and elk. It causes a spongy degeneration in the brain and spinal cord and has a long incubation period regulated to be anywhere between 18 months and 8 years. ■ Although CWD was first identified in 1967 in a Colorado wildlife research facility, the prions (folded proteins) that cause it weren't discovered until 1982. The man who first isolated the infectious agents, Stanley Prusiner, won a Nobel prize. ■ The effect on Michigan's deer herd will likely be slow. Some models show a potential 50% decrease in deer populations over several decades. ■ The most likely method of transmission is environmental contamination via feces, urine, saliva or carcass debris rather than feeding over bait. What does the return of CWD mean for us? ■ Several states have identified carcasses of infected animals from other states as the source of CWD in their deer herd. ■ A study of hunters in Colorado where CWD is prevalent showed no evidence of human transmission. However, since similar diseases have a long incubation period in humans, and the disease may not be identified without an autopsy, it is wise to be cautious and avoid eating deer from CWD areas. ■ Michigan's DNR is asking that you report deer that are unusually thin or displaying behaviors such as a lack of fear of humans or weakness. ■ There is a misconception that CWD is caused by high-fence hunting. It is not. It is more easily observed, identified and spread in a group of captive animals. It's also easier to contain in that setting than in the wild. ■ Michigan has rigorous standards of testing for captive deer facilities and has tested more than 20,000 captive deer for CWD. DNR actions will include: ■ Completing a population survey in the area where the CWD-positive deer was found. ■ Establishing a Core CWD Area consisting of Alaiedon, Delhi, Lansing, Meridian, Wheatfield and Williamstown townships in Ingham County; Bath and DeWitt townships in Clinton County; and Woodhull Township in Shiawassee County. Unlimited antlerless deer hunting licenses will be available. Mandatory checking of deer will be required in this area during hunting seasons and restrictions will apply to the movement of carcasses and parts of deer taken in this area. Landowners can get disease control permits and start hunting now. ■ Implementing a deer and elk feeding and baiting ban, which will include the Core CWD Area and a larger zone of all three counties. ■ Prohibiting the possession or salvage of deer killed by collision with a motor vehicle within the Core CWD Area. Also, residents are asked to call in the locations of roadkill deer within this area so DNR staff can pick up for testing. Research shows CWD-infected deer are more likely to be hit by vehicles because of their illness. More information on CWD is available at michigan.gov/cwd. At least some are writing the facts! -

And this is why our properties are managed our way and as we see fit. -
Had to be from a Deer Farm, right?
Four Season Whitetail's replied to moog5050's topic in Deer Hunting
Yup...Wrong again! Just more proof just as the first case in that state came from a taxidermist that also had a few study deer. Came from the wild in 08 and comes from the wild in 15 The part i laugh at is that this state says lets kill them all to try and stop the spread. Yeah right, You mean like Wisconsin did and now have twice as many deer and twice as much CWD. Just more deer killed by bullets looking for something that they most likley would not live long enough to catch anyways! Brilliant!!!! -

Come north and blast some does. You dont even need tags here. lol I always try to find room for a time for someone new to hunt. May not be free rein come anytime you want because i keep our bigger acres on the down low to keep the bigger bucks around. But a couple days here and there done smart can get a person some meat and not mess up the whole property at the same time! -

Just what we do on our properties. We know how many are there and we decide how many to shoot. Some years its 5 and others its 15 DEC has their hands full with their land and have failed with most of that. -

1oo% Agree and thats where hunting is and has been going for years. Leases eat up good land to raise/grow trophy bucks. They do their own management on those properties and if does are not in the program then they wont get shot. Growing the bone and using the does as bait. -

If 10% of the hunters kill all the deer then maybe they should give more tags to those that can kill them? I know some that hunt our properties find it hard to take a deer and then there is a couple that take 6-8 a year hunting the same property every year! Throwing more tags at hunters that cant kill will not work....And that they found out! -
The first 15 days of bow season in many area's in the Tier? Most all 8's are on the list.. So glad our land on 8M is not in but land on 8H is included. We have a pile of does down there and for the most part its doe only in the early season anyways. Sure this will rile the Ny Bowhunters club up some.

2 Bills to address deer poaching....
Four Season Whitetail's replied to growalot's topic in Deer Hunting
Yup same here..I have a small soybean/corn field that sits on a road that nobody lives on, every year within a day or two of the first snow there is drag marks out of that field from overnight without gutting. I hunt a night hunt and come back to hunt the next morning before daylight and bingo, Drag Marks! Many shot in that field and never recovered because they got scared or whatever. I called a couple different times to have them set the dummy deer up there and promised them they would get spotlighters at the very least but more than likley shooters. Was told twice someone would get back to me and once was told that they prob would not have time to do it? That field has been taken care of and we now manage the deer on our properties as we see fit. Tags no tags..Hunters no hunters..They have no time. But on a side note, I do know their numbers are stretched pretty thin. So if they dont have time to catch poachers then how do they have time to manage the deer? We got it covered for them. -
2 Bills to address deer poaching....

This will change little if anything. The ones that are going to poach will still do so, Regardless of what is considered poaching. -
Possible outcome here but lets not forget that many of those 21/2 year old bucks have a little more time in their heads on how to survive so just because everybody on the ridge are gunning for them the smarter ones will be the trophys. And that could be many!

Nah..Cant see this. Cop says stand where you want and do what you will but car is not going anywhere. She mouthed of for her rights and Mr Tough officer could have went back to his job at the road. First off if you listen to the video it was the lady cop that spoke with her, took her paperwork and told her to pull over to side of road! The male cop brought it upon himself to get involved into the scene. If two trained police officers could not take her down in a safe manner and cuff her without a freaking tazer then they have the bigger problem. Listen to the video again and listen to what the lady cop did to try and hold her with the male cop, She did nothing with her hands and went for the tazer. Again excessive use of force on a female citizen and you will hear more about this case in the future. These so called cops went above and beyond and just an FYI...I know 3 city cops that saw the video and have heard some of the inside scoop and they themselves think its a joke as to where those law officers took this. Way above needed force.

Yup..I can tell ya about how many deer use/live on my property and make my decision on how many need to be removed any givin year.Said it all along that the state has their handsful trying to manage deer on their property, I will worry about what goes on with mine.

Yuo are not alone.Treat it like you should and get rid of the undesirables on your property and manage the wildlife by your thoughts and beliefs and you will have a wildlife galore.

Eagle Shot in New Lisbon, Otsego County
Four Season Whitetail's replied to Curmudgeon's topic in General Chit Chat
I cant get the story to open but if the truth is known the shooter probably has a hunting licence and hunts something of some kind or its a teenager with one of dads guns. Many, many times hunters are their own worst enemies...Lets hope its not the case here. -
One can call it what they will. Not many things that cant be controlled by man!
-
You sure are right on the habitat that man can make or break a piece of land but i bet the dead coyotes that have been controlled in this area wish you were right on that one. The hundreds that have been killed must have been enough proof to the one's that are still alive to find a new place to scratch out a living. The one that didnt take heed and got a little close to what she thought may be breakfast has been controlled also. If what we have now is a normal amount of dogs compared to what we had just 3 short years ago then control wont be much needed but by killing 100's of anything i would have to say you are having some kind of control. They sure have had plenty of time to repopulate themselves if what the white coats say is fact so i, atleast if my part of the world say..Hogwash.. to that!

Spraying field
Four Season Whitetail's replied to jersey guy's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Same here. This will allow you to kill deer for 5 years and still have some left over to kill some 5 more years. There is only so much you can do in the forest but the sky is the limit in the food plotting area. Gly is a very important tool in that. Unless you have alot of time on your hands or like to see your blood and sweat wasted! -
I know of one that will be eating no longer. Big boy decided it would be fun to run the fence yesterday morning. Guess he did not see the Ram still sitting in the driveway. First one seen this spring though, Thats a good thing with fawns coming on.
-
If they were not managed via agriculture there would be no deer. With a good size piece of property its pretty easy to manipulate your numbers up or down and to keep them in pristeen condition so they show their maximum outlook. Some properties are showing more does having trips. If a person wants the best hunting posible the land and animals have to be managed, To a point!
-
Thats because 99% of hunters are not managers. They hunt, kill deer, fill tags and move on. Very few hunters really take a piece of property and make it deer friendly and in some areas that really does not matter. Deer are only going to yard up for winter in a few different places. If the work is not done where the deer really spend their winters then it really does not matter. Food plots will feed them while you are hunting them but when winter really sets in the deer will leave most properties and group up in a few winter friendly places.
-
If more people stood up for their deer and against the bull of suplementing deer during our hard winter we would not see as much of this. Yes deer need to be harvested and numbers kept in check but to live by the bull of deer being harmed by feeding them in the winter because of diesease and such is just that. Bull. Done right by people/landowners that know deer and their needs the deer make it through if awesome condition. Trust me, I see it every year on many pieces of properties. Just a few round bales of Alfalfa left in known wintering areas does wonders. Coyotes may get a few but starvation gets none.
-
Yup...We always hit Avon with a truck load of park deer for them to score, weigh, measure but when all the pety crap started we drive right on by. Have not stopped in years now.
-
Man they are one ugly bird after the deed is done. Great hunts!
-
Yup i can show you a pile of 120-150in Ny bucks that will never see print. Years ago i thought of listing one but never did. Does not seem important now at all.
