  1. I have one that looks just like him. It was the first buck i ever shot. Open sighted Marlin Lever 30-30. After that i had the bright idea of getting every number mounted after him. I now have a 6pt all the way up to a 13pt on the wall. Have shot a few bruisers after those mounted that were much bigger and a few made the books but the wife says no doubles mounted so my next mount will not be until 14pt..Needless to say..Its been 4 years since my last mount but i shoot for the next one every year.
  2. Really, You have problems finding and seeing good deer on Rattlesnake? We never seem to not see deer when we stay at the Hill. I would imagine its like most places..Depends where ya hunt.
  3. Oh i am sure the guys paying the cash are filling their fair share of tags. They just are going about it their way with their choices on what and how many will be harvested or let to carry on another year.
  4. That is cool..Looks to be a May born fawn. Good size with spots on their way out!
  5. Regardless, If a person from the city wants to hunt bad enough they will find places to hunt. Leases do eat up land but thats the same practice in farming. People lease our fields for crops and there is still plenty to go around. An hour drive to go on an 8 hour hunt on some of the best state land there is was/is and will always be a no brainer for me. Except for me its 21/2 hour one way.
  6. Low poundage should use cut on contact. After back surgery i was down to 50lbs and the Stingers were still blowing thru.
  7. I still dont get that way of thinking. I KNOW i am going to kill a deer every year without a doubt so what is the difference of knowing i am going to kill any deer then knowing i am going to kill the hardest to kill deer in the woods? Either way i know i am going to kill a deer...
  8. Welcome to Four Season Whitetails..lol.........Thats where the farm name came from! Its an addiction!
  9. If you throw in the skill and chance thought then the bigger buck is the best opponent to match wit's against. You want to really feel like a hunter and really Hunt...Go find and lay your eyes on the biggest mature buck and go kill that buck. Nothing less than what you put eyes on will do. That will make you hunt..and humble at the same time. To take a mature buck every year should be what most hunters aim for when they go hunting so im not sure how that would stop anyone from hunting.
  10. So why do you hunt at all then?? If it does not trip your trigger knowing you will kill a big buck every year then why does any deer trip it?
  11. So true....I leave 1000 acres of great hunting land for weeks at a time to drive 21/2 hours one way to hunt state land that 100.s of hunters hunt. There is bigger deer there and thats what i am after, so i do it. This is some of the best land in the area that i leave and there is some great deer but i just dont see those 130 plus very often up here but see many on the heavy hunted state land every year. Get out what ya put in!
  12. Yup same here and..Charlie.. is now my Vet for our Whitetails. He still loves to talk about his days of that show even thou he was very young then.
  13. So True! I think after a guy has taken 100's of deer and piles of bucks of all sizes hunting turns into more of the term hunting. Find a mature buck or two and go get them, accept nothing less and eat the tag if need be. To me if a buck does not make me gasp the second i lay eyes on him its just not a big deal. Still sit back and enjoy the show and enjoy the moment but to pull the trigger on a smaller buck just does not do it any longer. Meat is there about any time needed in places i hunt. Now for a young hunter coming up thru the ranks needs to enjoy all the stages of hunting. They to will most likely turn into a trophy hunter some day.
  14. I spend more times in the Tier than i do on the 1000 acres up here. There are bigger there than here and thats why i go there. I drive 3 hours one way about 8-10 times a year. If what you say is true in your area i sure would not be hunting there. You cant be 3 hours from the state lands i hunt and i can promise ya that if you know whitetails and how to hunt you will have many chances at all the doe tags you can get and a shot a probably one of the biggest bucks in your life. All depends what you want to give and get.
  15. Thats what i call hunting at this point in my hunting life. Find them and go get them on thier turf and not settle for less. Equal or bigger yes but not less...Does are a givin and dont even really come into the picture here.
  16. Right..So you pick out a couple that you know are there and scouted out and go hunt THEM.. If another of the same size or age comes thru then yes we would take him but you wont take the first young 6-8 point that walks thru opening morning?
  17. One pin but no slider. One pin will cover what 90% of the average bow hunter should ever shoot. When you start popin 60 yards plus then yes, But we know there are few of those kinds in Ny state for sure. Mule Deer or Lope in the west maybe.
  18. We all will take a gift if it walks into our lap's but how many actually go out and scout and find a couple bucks to hunt and then kill nothing less than those bucks? End of season and no meat im sure would change our plans but for the most part? We are heading down to camp this week for a few days to get some chores done and i will be down on the Park and the Farm to start the look for my couple to chase this year. No Cam's so it will be tree stand sits and long range field glassing.
  19. Life Sucks at times and Cancer Sucks the most. Have a buddy's mom that just found and had a mass taken out this past week. She now starts treatments. Sorry for your loss!
  20. You got that right..And believe it or not my bucks are already showing the urge. New demeanor everyday and winter coats coming in. Its all about the sunshine in the eye's!
  21. I hear Ny is not a bad place to live when ya live by your own set of standards.
  22. Sad but true...In our world of wanting/needing bigger and better. Keep the military and the sportsmen weapons in their own places of need.
  23. Yup i was in Dicks in Syracuse picking up 6 of those cheap $30 lock on stands that i stretch all over the bottom of Letchworth and i remembered i needed a bag of seed to finish one of the pens. I saw the isle with all the bags and went to grab one..Wrong..A whole isle of every attractant you could think of.
  24. Dont let that fool ya...A Whitetail is a Whitetail regardless of where it stands. My deer match up with the wilds year in and yer out.
