One biggie for mr. Got a few great hunting spots, but owner won't allow firearms. Arrows only. A nice thick and warm hunting coat is great on the stand in december. But try shooting an arrow straight with one on... Late season ease and comfort Is what attracts me, if it applies to others here. I agree with the ground blind argument. Been busted 4 times on drawing. If I had a crossbow, I'd have meat..... It's on my wishliat, but low. I just focus on these arrow only places early and enjoy other hood placed to hunt firearm season onward.

Remington 85gr cor lots work great. Far as the marlin is concerned, just removing the stock, clean and oil the internals will make that 336 trigger a ton better. Remove the one screw clamping the stock to the action. Slide out the stock. Then clean and oil. Use a touch heavier oil if possible. I typical use grease, but you need to take more things apart to get it that good. You might not to venture that much, although a 336 is an easy gun to take apart.

The edges of the pond are gold. Plant Adler, red dogwood, and maybe willow. Deer will go there. Deer think they're hunted by coyotes when they think they're hunted. They cross water and feel safe. They think wind and water is a way or being secure. Go for it. Improve the land for them and you'll get much more sightings.

I used the hornady SST's in 250gr which is the same bullet as T/C's. Now I use hornady XTP 240gr 44 mag hollowpoints with a harvested sabot. I always use real goex blackpowder. I use 90grs FFFg loose powder. I have found the shockwaves kill well, but leave poor blood trails. I like the XTP's better myself. The 45 long colt XTP's are great too, but I use that in a 45 colt lever gun. I use real blackpowder because I also shoot flintlocks which need real blackpowder. Also blackpowder is easier to clean up than some alternative powders. The fouling just dissovles to nothing with water. I'd had to work hard to get everything out of the gun with triple seven. A slower traveling bullet, you need to know what it does at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and so on. Practice field shots as much as you can. I do 50 yard prone, 50 yard offhand, 50 yard leaning against a tree, and 50 yard kneeling with a rimfire. I like your general scope choice of low power. But, use higher power binouclars to check for a clear shot. Bullets of any size, shape, or speed deflect when hit by small twigs or even worse....

Went up there for 4 days from fri night to tuesday afternoon. Does everyday, but no horns. I'm up in a spot where muzzleloader does are a no-no. Taking the weekend off because it's too hot. Next weekend regarless of temps I'll be up there for a 3 day weekend. I stand hunt morning and evenings with my lyman flintlock. mid-day I stalk hunt with a peep sighted marlin 30-30.

Swamp edges and ridges..... This is how I hunt the dacks. Look at ridges more so on the south face for rubs. Follow streams until you see crossing tracks, then follow them. Where does travel, bucks like to have a path 50 yards or so downwind. the beavers clear trees, so smaller growth. The deer thrive on smaller growth. The nicest buck on our 800 acre lease was harvested by a guy with a horrible hangover. Woke up to use the outhouse, and the deer was 20 yards from the cabin. Nailed him through a window around 930am veterans day weekend. You got big open woods, but in public land areas they do hold close to roads for undergrowth to eat. IF anything else, you got a beautiful base camp with a beaver pond....... Check out the area's rules. aDK has funny rules about clearing land, adding buildings, amoung other special issues. Another one is disturbing beaver ponds. MAybe talk to the town about rules a bit. The general DEC rules require a permit over an acre. that's state wide and not ADK specific. You get the property and want some beavers gone, there plenty of folk who do that one here.

Went up last weekend. Warm.... but tues morning was frosty! Saw does everyday, and saw moose tracks when I stalk hunted the atv trails on the lease in stillwater. Saving my time for next weekend. Too warm and a not so serious member bought a new side by side. Should be calmer then, and put the full gauntlet of cameras out there too. So I'll have some good Intel on rub lines.

They sure are. I do feel confined to my 800 acre lease though. I wander around and don't get the sketchy where am I feel.... However, knowing that 800 a red over a few years has taught me volumes on patterns there. What signs, what spots, what other animals look like sign. So, confinement can be good.

I like 4lbs, but I like about 1/8th inch of travel. Travel and creep are different. Travel is movement to release. Creep is like chatter. I shoot offhand competition. The better the shot picture, the more I squeeze. I drop test my guns too. To add travel, you sometimes need a new sear or trigger. If the gun has parts only a gunsmith can buy, I will never buy it. I do my own triggers. I almost always buy used guns too.

I build my own muzzleloaders. This sure make me nervous about cutting my own dovetails on the sights and barrel tennons. these new muzzleloaders are down right nuts. 3 times the powder of a traditional one...... And the substitutes are higher pressure than traditional blackpowder...... Shot a 54 cal using roundballs monday... 75grs of FFFg goes blackpowder. Gun and or user was a bit sloppy, maybe 1.5" groups. I usually get around 3/4's of an inch at 100 yards. Plenty good for me..... Hope his hand heals ok.

Price would be a nice plus... Category 1 or category 0 hitch? 540rpm pto ok? There are some higher rpm sub-compacts out there. -
Well, it's been a few days........ Here she is with her kin......... I also attached a few more pics... Pipsqueak the bear, and Eliot the atypical no-typical to post in a younger buck. Turkey seem to be more common each year. Worth the trip in May now.......

Im ready, Bow is shooting so-so, so i'm limiting myself to 20 yards this year. Bringing traps with me this year, something a bit new. Just finished up cutting fish pieces for mink trap bait. other than that......... Does before Hoes!

I never used those guys. I use these folks..... Very, very, cheap. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/9395.html You can pick them up 3rd friday/sat in april at any soil and conservation district. The one in Cairo might be on the way to grand gorge. I use several things to break up large plot areas into corners. -red dogwood, praire willow, white cedar, hazelnuts, and white spruce. They have permissions at times, crab apples, and plenty of other stuff hunters like. -
I use hornady XTP in 240gr .429", a harvester ribbed sabot, 80 grains goex FFFg real blackpowder, and a plain old remington STS shtogun primer. They kill deer just fine, they're around 60 cents a shot with powder and primer.... That's cheaper than 30-30 ammo on a really good sale these days. However, that gun is my loaner for new hunters. I shoot a lyman GPR flintlock with .535" roundball, homemade lubed patches, and 80 grains FFFg goex blackpowder. English flints are my primer........ I have only shot deer in the rain and snow with it so far. No nice n dry days yet....... I use a cover for the gun. If the weather is real bad, I prime the pan on sight of deer.

I do.

With bow, I got up to about 15ft. With rifle, I will only put up 2 sections, so about 10 feet. Situation does command it. More importantly is concealment, not so much height. Folks put them on the ede of fields, instead of a tree or two deep. Or make sure there's some branches behind you to break up the outline. Also keep in mind where the sun is during your ideal hunt time. Too high makes close up deer harder to shoot, because you shooting higher up on the rib cage to get through the middle of the lungs. When your up too high, the lower branches get in the way. People limp away from 15ft falls, 30ft will not be forgiving........ I clear all rocks, dead branches, and loosen up the soil around the base. I have even put mulch down. That few inches of cushion makes a huge difference in how a body reacts to a fall.

Anybody fish there. What's in the river this time of year

Frost has shown up in a week or two up the dacks in the past. I go up opening bear, not rare to have a frost by then.

My local agway isn't a great deal on clover. Thinking of buying a big bag. I manage abut 2.5 acres of clover. That's around 150lbs a year plus I usually do a friend or twos bow plot. If you bought 1 clover what would it be? I usually do both red and ladino.
-
I bought ladino clover from the local agway. I don't believe it was inoculated with rhibosomes. Red clover uses the se innocullant. They had coated red clover. I planted a mix in 3 plots. One is a reseed, two are new plots. Think I'll be alright?
