You do know the gentleman died and the gun shop is vacant!!??!!

Very neat video!!! Love looking at those replica rifles, pistols, powder horns, knives, etc.

Forest Fever sounds logical. Wood Lusting has too many connotations! Years ago, at work a guy told me I had Hunter's Glare. As I looked at him dumbfounded, he said I looked like I was far away, up in a tree and intensely staring into the brush. Totally removed mentally from my current location. I didn't need to ask, he was a hunter also!

Watched a rerun this morning of that D&DH show. The clip that was posted on page one here was the intro clip for the show. An attention grabber! He had many other comments that were interesting, if you took into consideration the source. Also had a couple of other interesting segments. One was about values & ethics and basically doing what's best for you in your area. Other was "Why you can't shoot big bucks" and the theme was impatience. All in all, 1 1/2 thumbs up.

I'm a terrible sitter, very difficult to sit for any length of time. I have restless leg syndrome. I'm great in the mornings; brisk temps, sunrise, lotsa deer movement & on high alert. Good 'til ~10-ish. Afternoons are my worst time waiting for that last hour of light. Warm afternoon, no deer movement, squirrels driving you crazy, eye lids closing, stand-up, sit down, ....

I also received the file burmjohn posted. Received these also. May be interesting. One is article in Conservationist mag explaining the Bowhunters Survey. Others are different sightings data, a summary and a map.

I'm agree totally! Hunt in a thicker area and deer seem to move around in random directions regardless of wind. If I followed the "downwind rule" for the prevaling NW wind, I could only hunt along one side of my property.

Does this nervousness, day-dreaming, anticipation and longing for the season to begin have a name for the disorder? Lets coin a new word! There is already "Buck Fever", so maybe "Antici-Buck-tion". Word game time,, lets hear it!

Embroidery depicts a pretty neat picture! Just a little heads-up on what to expect when the package gets here. What do you enter into the survey log?

Never gets any better after all these years! Hope that doesn't change or I'll be finding other distractions for Oct/Nov/Dec. Thought it would be better now that I've retired. Don't have the daily obligations, like work to keep me distracted. So I'm constantly looking out the window, checking the weather or wanting to take a walk in the woods. Guess this free time will be beneficial when the season eventually gets here, but seems like an eternity 'til then!!!

This is why everyone is getting so defensive! You're arguing, not discussing! Opinions are value based and evolved from life experiences of each individual. No one is going to change these unless they are pummeled to the ground and beg for mercy.

Dr. Woods is one of many expert whitetail biologist and they all have slightly different opinions or views. He is not the "Whitetail God" you are attempting to make him out to be. He has one view of a wild animal’s behavior; if you plan on following only his preaching it’ll have a very narrow view. We all have valued opinions which we may not agree upon, but each has its merits. Yes, even us uninformed & uneducated have plausible opinions. Please don't let your conversations here be influenced by any agenda you may have outside of this forum.

You go girl!!! My 2¢; You would think that the 70 pages of discussion on AR in at least 3 separate topics would have given every member the opportunity to air their opinion....???? The chest beating, "in-your-face" attitudes and constantly repeating your views are all non-productive to a healthy discussion. No matter how much you try to bully someone or attempt to drive your opinion down their throat - it's a losing cause! Almost every poster states that each hunter should be allowed to hunt how they like to, then you keep campaigning your opinion. What's the end result of this discussion - winner is the person that gets the last word in or the last man standing? This isn't a championship MMA or WWE cage match & no one gets bragging rights for "Best Brow Beater"!!! This topic is getting beaten into the ground and everyone seems to be resurfacing old facts or personal experiences and chasing their tails. Keep the discussion real and personal. Don't bring in agendas you may have outside the scope of this forum. Back to the topic; Human nature; Every hunter's idea of what they expect out of the experience differs. Whitetail biology; Deer genetics, behavior and habitat vary greatly, even within specific management units. Courtesy; If you don't know my specific situation, don't tell me I need to hunt in a way that is based on personal experiences in your area. I hunt the way I like to and how it gives me a pleasurable experience, while doing so within the law. You want to be a "Killer", got at it safely & within the law! I'm a hunter. You want to hunt for horn, don't tell me I need to hunt that way! I cherish memories, not mounts on a wall. If you hunt to fill the freezer, God bless you & do it! I do too. If I get a thrill out of encounters with or being able to harvest a 4pt buck or doe - it's my hunt! Don't criticize how I like to hunt and I promise I'll never criticize how you attain pleasure from your hunting experience!!!!!!

Deer scents and cover scents, if you use them, how much?
nyslowhand replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Earlier post was for lures and attractants. Concerning cover scents, use the earth scent disc pinned to my hat. Take care of this through personal hygiene, washing & storing clothing and spraying with scent killer. -
On the contrary, I'd be upset if they answered the phone every time it rang. They should be out in the field most of their day. Eddie: If you want to enroll in the survey, PM me with your info & I'll forward it. Or try this guy, he must be the one responsible for administering the bowhunter survey: (He's the one that responded to my request) J. Edward Kautz Wildlife Biometrician NYS DEC, Bureau of Wildlife 625 Broadway, 5th Floor Albany, NY 12233-4754 518-402-8882 FAX: 518-402-9027 [email protected]

Pretty sure that's not how the DEC estimates deer populations and the allotment of DEC per unit. Yes, you are correct - every humter must report all kills for DEC to be able to evaluate sucess rates.
-
What's your source for this? Personal experience? Most whitetail biologist state that a majority of the breeding is done by 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 year old bucks. So what significant role in the breeding and management do mature (3 1/2+) bucks contribute? If it's genetics, we better be talking about reverse AR. If I'm incorrect; state your source and why I'm wrong.

Me too, got an acknowledgement that package is in the mail.

Night shot of a ~2 1/2 year old 8pt and a doe. Hen turkey with her 3 remaining brood. Think the foxes or coyotes ate the rest. Of course the normal, photogenic squirrels.

Swapped Trail Cam memory cards today (9/28). Up until last Saturday, had seen a few small-ish rubs. Today there were several bigger, more aggressive rubs. Gotta try and stay out of the woods, if I can! Like a little kid digging in the closets looking for the Christmas gifts. Anticipation is killing me!!! ???
-
If that's what floats your boat, great! I'd love to participate in the survey, if I weren't wasting my time. Suppose I could use the log info as my personal journal!
-
To review the raw data for personal reasons - or - to be able to provide input back to the DEC?
-
Eddie, If you do get in contact with him, please find out exactally what happens to the supplied log info. Pretty generic description on the web page. Like to think it was useful info they used to evaluate population density & potential DMP allotments....?
-
A buck would be crazy to set-up his rut area where there are no does. When they typically establish these areas with rubs/scrapes, there are already does living within there. IMHO - Right now the bucks are trolling for the girls and an area to s/u in for the upcoming festivities. This is for the pre-rut and becomes much more unpredictable and volatile when the chasing/breeding starts.

Deer scents and cover scents, if you use them, how much?
nyslowhand replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Great question! Curious to see what others have used or found that works best. I frequently use a drag line when entering my hunting area with either doe or buck urine lure. At the stand, I use only one wick with a single lure for whatever point during the rut I feel will work. Occasionally I'll put a 2nd wick out near the 1st one to increase the dispersion effect. Try not to over do the scents and keep them no more than 5' off the ground. Always wonder about this very question in regards to the Buck Bombs, since I've never used them.
