  1. That had to be a challenge keeping up to date on that!!
  2. Wow! Had to be an interesting career, intense but interesting all the same. QLTY refer to quality? That was my career before retirement.
  3. Yeah, just one and shoot it t try the meat! But once they are here there is no turning back. There here to stay! You thought stray cats were bad!!! "Feral hogs are capable of breeding at six months of age but eight to ten months is normal, provided there is good nutrition. Under poor habitat conditions, sows have been known to eat their young. Gestation is around 115 days with an average litter size of four to six, but under good conditions may have ten to twelve young. While capable of producing two litters per year, research has shown the majority of sows have only one per year." "REPRODUCTION OF FERAL SWINE: Once a sow reaches breeding age at 7 or 8 months of age they can be responsible for 1,000 plus feral swine in a 5 year period."
  4. Was some discussion about it here, eddie. http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,1490.0.html
  5. Love it when the TV celebs get one down. First thing they do is stick the tongue back in its mouth and then look it over. Like that makes it appear more photogenic. To a hunter, a dead deer is a trophy with all the blood, guts, tongue & all. To a non-hunter, not such a pretty sight I'd think.
  6. See I knew it! Oh well. :-[ Handy gizmo for some, but still seems crazy to me.
  7. You know how much those damned things are? Start at ~$140. When you're fooling around on eBay, search for; buck knife filework or fileworked Thery're worth a look, very neat knives! Looks more like a neat collector knife than one you'd want to get all blood & guts! Lot of videos on youtube on how to do it! Do the same search. Take a new Buck 110 hunter folding knife and take it all apart. Do the filework, epoxy new exotic handle material and reassemble. Sounds easy, huh? ??? Looking for a cheapie, used one to practice on & see if it is really something that gets me excited. Could be just another one of my whims. Don't we all get them? Other current whim is to make a powder horn. Have to see where that goes.
  8. Bet you'll be the only one on your block that doesn't have one. : Probably comes with a guarantee and best of all "Made in China". May take some flack for this, but my favorite is the Deer (rear) View Mirror. What the heck.........
  9. One thing they mention on the show was not to argue or discuss ethics. They are personal beliefs and arguing them is a losing battle. Good way to make enemies or lose friends! Ever take a Philosophy class - along those same lines. Accept that others may have differnt beliefs and live by yours.
  10. Noooo! Nothing like getting up at 2 or 3 AM on a Sat/Sun morning. Oh yeah, primetime TV is the 6 o'clock news or reruns of Friends.
  11. I worked those hours for awhile also. They have their advantages & disadvantages. Really messed up my biological clock!
  12. Been there, done that. Hint - don't take a chainsaw with you when you're trimming like I do.
  13. Or you could always take your laptop and do some work...? ???
  14. Thought about the same thing myself, but decided not to. My property is wet and I have aggressive mud tires on my ATV. Don't think a tractor could get into the areas I do. I drive over stone fences, blaze trails over saplings, retrieve deer with the winch, carry my chainsaw & tools in the front compartment. It's just too convienent to trade-in for a tractor. Anyways - back to burmjohn's topic.
  15. Lost my 40 year old Buck folding knife last year. While looking around for a replacement, ran into some customized ones. Very neat, $$$ - but neat all the same. I'd like to try it, but those dudes are HARD, Rc 60 or something like that. Don't want to mess around with annealing, heat treating and re-tempering. Any one fool around with this hobby?
  16. It's made and named for what it can do, Traxter (Tractor). High torque, low end pulling machine. Can-Am doesn't make them for themselves anymore, but it's the same as the JD Buck.
  17. One final word of advice: Don't over engineer the flooring or framing! Maybe deck boards instead of 2" lumber? You'll be adding extra weight and that will reduce what your ATV will safely pull. I've got a pretty good Otter plastic tub trailer I have filled with over a 1000# of gravel. My Bombardier Traxter 500cc ATV will pull it but it's a task. Even with 1/2 - 3/4 face cord of wood in the trailer, you can feel the ATV is working! No so much the cc but what abuse the rear axel will tolerate.
  18. Nothing like a little Skynard to get the adrenaline going!
  19. Manmade funnels over creeks/ditches are a tough one, can be done with some success and a little creativity. My neighbor put plastic drainage pipe with old wooden doors over a couple of wet spots along his trail. The deer have trails around and avoid these. I've put in large corrugated pipes and filled over them with gravel to forge a seasonal run-off with an ATV. The deer use these. I've also have been semi-successful with creating paths for them over stone fences. Move what boulders you can aside and fill-in the remainder with dirt/gravel. Deer are basically lazy. If you make a trail, path, forging, etc near where they normally travel - they'll use it if they feel save & secure. You generally can not make them go where you want them to go! But you can make their normal travel routes easier & take advantage of that! If you come up with a way to get Easy Passes for your deer, let me know. I'm thinking about getting them SSNs and claiming them on my taxes. Not cheap to maintain!! LOL :
  20. I probably can't help, but it may be helpful to others if you'd give the barrel's brand, mfg or ID.
  21. Ethics, morals and opinions are all standards, guidelines or feelings an individual has which were developed through their background, education and life experiences. Everyone's differ slightly and some drastically. If we all were the same regarding these feelings & standards - what would we have to talk about? Problem arises when the use of ethics & morals gets paint brushed over a situation like hunting. Basically, a few individuals attempt to apply their ethics, opinions & morals to a situation that they want to be applicable for all. Now you are taking an individual's feelings and thinking that they are good for everyone. Kinda like some of the discussions we have on this forum? LOL Ethics and morals have nothing to do with laws or regulations. Medical ethics are bylaws, but a gross misuse of the word! Don't take these examples out of context!!! Mormons think they can be polygamist. Is it legal? Do you agree with them per your ethics or morals? Certain cultures belittle woman. Do they feel they are right? Is it illegal? Do you think they are ethically or morally right? What do you think the American Civil War was about - ethics & morals! The list goes on - getting the idea?
  22. Their prices aren't unreasonable! Looking at the DIY kit? My 1st ML was a Hawken kit. Rifle barrels are a problem to blue at home, but can be done. I'm sure you've considered a used one from the gun auctions. Blackpowder guns can be shipped to/within NY without the added FFL expense. Drop a PM to bpb and tell him what you are thinking. He can help!!
