  1. I always use the leaf cut camo material around my ladder stand platform & the tree. Around the tree it's about shoulder hieght & then down to the arm rails. Keeps the body movements semi-concealed. Works good for me!
  2. If you live in WNY for awhile you take the weather predictions with a grain of salt & look out the window for the real-time weather.
  3. Hope you tag out opening weekend, they really need you at work!!! Enjoy your time off!! Best of luck also to you & son!
  4. Yeah, idenity theft is no laughing matter - I know. Happened to me twice within 6 months about 5 years ago. Second time was a disaster, had to threaten to file a grievence with the Fed Treas Dept. My bank (Key) was confident that I was to blame and kept adding on overdraft penalties & fines on top of the mistaken $1200 withdrawal. Now am happy with a community credit union!
  5. I have zero sense of security with a lock-on/hang-on stand. Just me, up on a perch and a rope tether. ??? More power to any hunter that hunts from one! Do love the security of my ladders with the wrap around rails. My climber is a Summit Viper, so it's not one of those $100 Sniper cheapies. I use it only occassionaly, but it's a secure climber if used correctly!
  6. I'll go you one better. Bet there are more accidents on hang-ons as opposed to climbers. What Culvercreek is proposing is dangerous. Up steps, then into a climber with the arm & shooting rails, Tried that twice and did not feel safe doing it!!! Took that s/u down! If you pay attention to what you're doing & take your time, climbers can be safe.
  7. If it were me, it would have been tail-less.
  8. If everyone would add it to their profile, we'd all know.
  9. Just got a new fanny pack & at the time I was considering a backpack. At the max I'm only 2400' from the front of my property. What on earth could I get into a backpack that'd be helpful? Yeah, a fanny pack....is that not PC? lol
  10. I think Cumo is afraid of him. The campaign bashing started already. TV ad brings out that he has a temper. Now (allegedly) has made derogatory remarks about homosexuals. I think some voters are turned off by his personality, brash & in your face. Also think Cumo is making a lot of idle promises he'll never be able to keep. So what's new!!!! ???
  11. Nothing to comare its' size to. Looks like a fair sized coyote. Had one road killed over the summer near Sodus.
  12. May shoot a couple more times. Put a fresh edge on my broadheads. Get bow, quiver and arrows scent free. Pack my fanny pack. Do a little snack & grocery shopping. Weather looks decent (Rochester area), looking ahead 4 days... Been a long time coming!!!!
  13. To each his own, but over the years I've gotten turned off by hunting deer with a shotgun. Carried my ML only for the past 4 years during the regular SZ season.
  14. This angular compensation is not something that the average bowhunter needs to clutter their brain with while at full draw. There are two exceprions. If the deer is less than 10 yards, the difference in horiz & line of sight distances could be ~3yds. Probably not a shot I'd make anyways. Shooting stright down at a deer. You've lost 1/2 your kill zone & single lung shot is your best hope. Second exception is for the eagle bowhunters than are more than 25' in the air. The difference in the two distances becomes more pronounced from those heights. For the average bowhunter whose platform is generally 15-20' high, would you compensate for a 1-2yd difference if you knew that in advance? Probably not, unless you shot 1" groups at all your sighted yardages. Like WNYbuckhunter said, there are other things you should be concentrating on when in the heat of the moment. Don't mess up an opportunity by trying to out-think or over analyze your shot!!
  15. More than likely those were for "fenced" areas, weren't they Doc? Texas maybe..? If you have every deer within the fences and thin out the bucks that are less than desireable, you'll end up with great breeding stock. In the wild - no way would culling have any effect.
  16. So we all some how wash and store our hunting clothing as scent free as possible. Who has bath towels that have been washed in scent free detergent? Didn't take me long to realize I was wasting time & $$ if I used a normally washed/fabric softener bath towel after scent free bath/shower. Keep 2 or 3 bath towels set aside that have been washed scent free. Mostly for bow season.
  17. This was eluded to in the topic you started about the NYDEC Strategic Forestry Plan. http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/68400.html It probably will inevitably happen, regardless of public input. I'm not too thrilled about defacing forestry lands that were purchased to be protected.
  18. Now, what are you going to do about all the hair you've pulled out from the frustration?
  19. Nothing like a ground blind when it's cold & raining or snowing. Cuts down on the wind too!
  20. The things we have to do for our 4 legged step-children... :
  21. If you even thought for a minute she'd do all that - she's a keeper!! Maybe next year teach her to hang stands & trim shooting lanes. Then the following year think she'll be ready to drag a deer out & gut it. If she's up for all that, does she have a sister? lol
  22. So Doc, we're giving up on the invention scheme to make your millions? ??? ?
  23. Another topic got into this. Basically the effectiveness of a ground blind was split about 50/50. Many commented that they need to be set-up early and brushed in or concealed some how. Lot of it depends on where you want your feet while hunting, some people hate heights. Another factor is your field of view, in a blind your view is a little limited. Great for foul weather hunting as opposed to sitting up in a tree. As far as convenience, think it is about the same for backpacking a climber as it is for toting a decent sized blind. Hang-on stands can be some what time consuming to tear down & re-setup. Bet if you took a poll, the climbing treestand would easily be chosen for overall effectiveness & mobility. Not everyone has this option, but ladder stands are great choices once you have "hot spots" picked out. Depends on where you hunt. Personal, public or private land. The terrain - woodlots, fields or thickets. They all have their advantages & disadvantages!
