  1. This whole situation with others infringing of someone's hunting property is just the tip of the iceberg. Wait a few years, it's going to get ugly. Available hunting locations for someone that does not own their own property is creating a Pandora’s Box. I can see landowners really taking advantage of lease fees. Even to the point of bidding or auctions. Already know several hunters that don't have access to hunting properties that strictly road hunt. They have no regard for whose property they are shooting onto and don't bother with permission to retrieve. Suburban hunting is really getting popular with the shooting distance restrictions being ignored. Some hunters that have no property or privileges are becoming callous & uncaring about other's properties. If you own a few hundred acres, neighbors hunting near the property line may not be a big deal. If you own a much smaller "piece of heaven" it becomes much more of an infringement issue. If you are going to hunt a property line, that's your right. But you better be facing the property you can hunt and have retrieval rights before hand. Because it's going to happen. If property is posted, there are consequences for trespassing. Be prepared for those. If you get along with your neighbors, that's a terrific situation for all involved. Not every one does for whatever reason. If you do not own property, you probably are unclear as to what is required to obtain and maintain property, financially and labor. No one owns the wildlife regardless of where they reside or roam!
  2. Don't know about the mange part, but small game & predators do share population cycle trends. Your suggestion for an open season on coyotes is probably the best option, but will never happen. Imagine hunting state land and letting loose with a shotgun or rifle and having campers within hearing distance? Wouldn't be too long before you hear the sirens. May not get a summons, but will have some very upset people. I've hunted state land for turkeys in the past. Fact of life - have to deal with the campers, hikers, their dogs, horeback riders, etc. So what's the solution? Restrict lawful firearm, restrict available public land hunting, combination of both? Open season entire state, shotgun/bow only state land & all other areas unrestricted firearm from Oct. - Apr. Then Apr. - Oct., private land only with unrest firearm. Gotta be a happy medium to keep their population under control. IMHO -Not too crazy about allowing rifle hunting for coyotes in areas that don't allow them for big game. The potential for the disregard for the safety of others in semi-densely populated rural areas is too high. Assumption is the universal 5% rule of thumb will prevail. 95% will hunt safely and the remainder......
  3. There is not way to control the current regulation of NO BAITING. How would the DEC ever be able to control it with any relaxed restrictions? Last thing I want to see is any further incerase of CWD in NY. Keep it -no baiting!
  4. Exactally the same brand and model. Buck 110 hunter's folding knife. It's not really a good size for everday pocket or belt sheath wearing. Perfect as a hunting knife. There are a lot of other good fixed blade knives if they are your preference.
  5. I do NOT get a kick-back from Buck Knives, but their folding knife model 110 sets the standard all others have copied. I had mine for ~40 years and never had any problem with it. Lost it this spring about the time I had cleaned a turkey. Have since replaced it, but it's like a part of me is missing. Wish I could recall how many deer, turkeys & small game it had cut into..! They also make a very similiar, but slightly smaller model 112 that is more conducive to carrying in your pocket. If you're serious about a better knife, look on eBay. Retail store prices are set by the manufactures.
  6. Not me, my involvement ends with cap & ball. Don't see myself getting into flintlocks.
  7. The following may be more widespread than we think: Possibly (?) cheaper knives use inferior steels that are then plated to resist corrosion..? “Why does Buck use stainless steel? We use stainless steels because they meet the exacting demands of the many different types of knives we make. Stainless steels are alloy steels that have been carefully developed to resist corrosion and more. Our knives are made to be exposed. Harsh conditions like water, snow, salt, air and chemicals are second nature to a Buck. Every Buck is made with stainless steels that offer a good blend of hardness, strength, toughness, ductility, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, edge retention and the ability to re-sharpen.” Case knives use a SS, probably a very similiar alloy. Boker/Sollingen use a steel cobalt alloy that is rust resistant. Schrade knives are now made in China, so who knows...!
  8. Come on Bill -Never say never! Someday when all your tags are filled early, there are no scheduled shoots and for some miracle the Bills are having a decent year..... See you chose you words carefully to avoid the lightening bolt. ".....cold day in anyplace...."
  9. My understanding from this link is: If you had an Oregon hunting license, you probably will not need to take the NY course. If you're into bow hunting and had an approved bow hunting safety course before, you may be ok in NY. Before next hunting season rolls around, wouldn't hurt to contact your local DEC office and ask? Those classes fill-up quickly and aren't always at the most convenient times. Maybe some other member has a better understanding of this! http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6094.html
  10. Ohh crap, I lost! Pygmy you're a dawg.
  11. AR is a single component within the overall QDM philosophy. http://www.qdma.com/who-we-are/what-is-qdm/
  12. Can't address you question about all knife blades. Have been referring to Buck folding pocket knives only. They appear to be the most popular brand/style to be customized.
  13. Welcome to NY and the forum! Several places to hunt within NY that are open to the public. The NY Dept Envir Cons (DEC) has listings and maps of these. http://www.dec.ny.gov Probably need a map of NY showing county locations. The membership on the forum is widespread across NY. You should be able to get a lot of input once you pick a few spots. You tell an out-of-stater you're from NY, they immediately envision concrete and tall buildings.
  14. Usually opening day & again on Thanksgiving weekend, my neighbor does drives on 2 sides of my property. As a stand hunter, it works out very well for me!!
  15. Just curiious. User names intrigue me; hidden meanings, initials, passions or whatever.
  16. Never have! Never will! Just not fairchase to me regardless of the amount of acreage. Question for you; What is Four Seasons Whitetails other than a user name?
  17. What do you use on the scent wick to attract them?
  18. From what I've read/viewed so far, nothing was mentioned about re-plating. To be honest, I don't know - but don't think they are even plated from the factory. Just a high grade SS alloy. One option was to use diamond, needle files to do the artwork. Apparently a tedious, lengthy process on the Rc60 metal parts. Alternative was to "un-harden", do artwork and then bring metal parts back to original hardened state. This option made filing easier, but involved more steps that had the potential of compromising the original integrity of the bldae, etc. Like I mention, think these are more collectors than practical hunting knifes when completed. As you have mentioned before, I too am always looking for an interesting winter project.
  19. Used these for years. Also do the scent-free wash/dry and stick one in bag routine. Usually pin one to my hat while hunting. Couldn't tell you if they actually work. Gives me a "warm, fuzzy" feeling about being semi-scent free. Finish hunting, stick it back in can & they seem to sort of regenerate smell. They also come in a RUT scent. This is one you'll want to put in a tree & not on your hat. They reek!!!
  20. They think they are other young yotes or their cousins??? Come on tell me, can't stand the suspense!
  21. Good for you! Made the best of a terrible weather situation!!!!! ;D
  22. My father was in the same situation with his auto collision repair business. Oct/Nov was very busy with car/deer accident repairs. Generally, he never got to hunt until about Thanksgiving or a little after.
  23. Not totally true, need the habitat also. Older-yes, but not necessarily bigger!
  24. Really hyped-up about this, aren't you? Good for you!! It'll be fun!
