  1. I'd hunt elk any old day with my 7mm08 and a good stout bullet like a Nosler Partition, or better yet, a Barnes X...Same goes for a .308, although I have never owned one.
  2. I don't think anyone is trying to keep any secrets.. For sure I am not...It's just that if I were looking for a mag, I'd search online ( like most of us would) and check obvious sources like Brownell's or Numrich....

    Football

The Packers squandered two prime opportunities early in the first quarter to gain a commanding lead...Ended up with FGs instead of touchdowns.. Tough to do that and WIN at that level of competition.
  4. Over the last 65 years I have heard of many things that are bad for me. Unfortunately, I enjoy most of them..<<sigh>>.. Defintion of the "Heart Healthy" diet...If it tastes GOOD, spit it out...
  5. My ex-wife makes it every year...Good stuff, but my supply kinda dried up... Now I buy it from a farmer in Ontario, Canada, who also allows me to hunt gobblers on his property...It is also good stuff, and a LOT cheaper in the long run...
  6. Butter.... I haven't bought a pound of margerine in many, many years.. If I use oil it is usually olive oil EXCEPT for high temp frying, at which time I use Canola oil, peanut oil, or grapeseed oil. I do use quite a bit of Evoo....
  7. Nothing like buying a new gun !! .....<< Pygmy does the HAPPY DANCE >>.....
  8. Yeah, Dinsdale...That's a factor also... I can do RT to Juneau for about the same $$ it cost me to fly to CO last fall... Shoot ALL them damn bears as far as I'm concerned...hehehehe...
  9. I want to thank all of my friends here for your encouragement. I am a definite maybe at this point.. Need to get more info. The Mermaid is being supportive, ( bless her heart)...Or maybe she just wants to get rid of me...hehehehe.. I'd have to get checked out by my sawbones to make sure that there are no health issues that would make this a bad idea.. I have been checking out commercial salmon trolling on youtube..Looks like a hoot...Like running a gigantic Seth Green Rig...
  10. The .308 was developed as a military cartridge to replace the 30-06. The goal was to have a power level close to the 30-06, but with a smaller, lighter cartridge. This allowed soldiers to carry more ammo and also worked better in fully automatic weapons. So think of it as a shorter, lighter kicking 30-06. It fires the same bullets .308 cal. With lighter bullets like 150 grain, the difference in performance is neglible. Only with heavier bullets (180 grain and up) does the 30-06 have a significant advantage in ballistics.
  11. I've never owned a Benelli, but several of my friends have them, and thier reputation is stellar. I agree with lawdwaz. If they are too far to kill with 3" shells, they're too far to shoot. Personally, I'd go with the 26" barrel rather than the 28". Two inches doesn't seem like much, but I find the handling characteristics of the shorter barrel more to my liking, either for turkey hunting or wingshooting.
  12. I suspected it was something like that.. The .308 should work fine for your Dad. With 150 grain bullets the performance is right up there close to the 30-06, with less recoil.
  13. .308 Win MAG..?? Never heard of it. Perhaps it's a .308 Win or a .300 Win Mag ? If it is indeed a .308 Win, 150 grain loads would be a good choice for good performance on deer and relatively light recoil. There are also reduced recoil loads in that chambering if your Dad is especially recoil sensitive. If the rifle is a .300 Win mag it is going to kick considerably harder than your 30-06 with ANY load.
  14. Ruger makes one of those ?? The one I am am familiar with is a Armalite AR-7 , the one James Bond used in the Movie " From Russia With Love"....
  15. Tell ya what, Biz....We'll SWAP... You go to Alaska for me, and I'll fill in for YOU at the bachelor party and honeymoon... I'll SKIP the wedding though...Already had one of those....
  16. I got an email yesterday from a friend in Alaska.. He retired from his job working for the State of Alaska in 2012. He has since bought a 38 foot commercial fishing vessel and worked last year fishing for salmon, and did very well.. He had worked for years as a commercial fisherman before he took the job with the state, so he has a lot of experience commercial fishing for various species. He invited me to come up to Alaska this summer and fish with him ( for wages) for 2 or 3 weeks, speed trolling for king and coho salmon. Sounds like a wonderful adventure, but I'm not sure my 65 year old body will be up to the task.... My buddy is a couple of years older than me, but he is a weathered Alaska born Irish-American, tough as a pine knot and accostomed to the physical labor required to run a fishing boat.. Something to think about..If I decide to go I may have to start working out with Growie at the gym..
  17. If only guns could talk.... I think about that with some of my military rifles... A Russian M-N made in 1917....A german K98K made in 1938...A Springfield Armory Garand M1 made in 1943...A Canadian SMLE #4 made in 1944... 6.5 and a 7.7 Jap Arisakas, date unknown, but WWII vintage..
  18. For cramps, eat a spoonful of prepared mustard.. Any old brand, such as French's will do...Believe it or not, it really works.. Athletes such as football players eat little restaurant envelopes of mustard on the sidelines during a game for the same reason.
  19. I knew SOMEONE would pick up on that.. I nearly edited it out.. I should have know that you'd catch it, Growie ..LOL.. Of course I meant to say I was in the RESTAURANT for lunch .. That was the old Ritz Cafe in Addison, once known as the " Wild West Center of Steuben County"... There was a partition down the center. The restaurant was on one side and the bar was on the other. The restrooms were on the BAR side, so patrons had to walk through the bar to access the can. They had wonderful home cooked food there. ( In the RESTAURANT, hehehe) They baked thier own bread, rolls and biscuts. In the 1960s, daily lunch specials such as chicken & biscuts, stuffed pork chops, meatloaf, etc. cost a buck. A ham sandwich, with about an inch and a half of shaved ham piled on thick slices of homemade bread, cost 50 cents. You could get a dip of mashed potatoes with gravy for a dime... The Ritz closed and was bought up by a Christian group quite a few years ago. It's a church now...I'm sure many of the old patrons are rolling in thier GRAVES at the thought of the Ritz being a church...<<grin>>...
  20. Very informative.. Back when shotguns were mandatory in my county, I had an informal target range in my backyard. There was room enough for about a 100 yard shot. We were shooting directly into a hillside, with no dwellings, livestock, etc. for perhaps a mile in the background. Many, MANY times when shooting shotgun slugs you could hear them whine off into the wild blue yonder after striking the ground. I seldom if ever hear a ricochet when shooting centerfire rifles under similar conditions with expandable hunting bullets. FMJs would probably be much more prone to ricochet.
  21. I think I saw Wooly hiding behind an oak tree in the second picture.. It was SOME guy wearing shorts and puffing on one of those VAPO cigarettes...
  22. I plan to live forever. So far, so good...
  23. Many, many years ago, when I was a mere wisp of a lad, I went into the men's room in a local bar/restaurant..I was in there for lunch, because I was much too young to drink. I'll never forget some of the graffitti written on the wall above the urinal... One was " Stand closer, that ain't no WINCHESTER you're holding".. Another one was " Please don't throw cigarette butts in the urinal. It makes them soggy and hard to light".. Another one was.." Please don't pee on the floor. The janitor has holes in his shoes"....
  24. That is my favorite..I LOVE a happy ending...
  25. Nice rifle...Looks like a Rem 700CDL and I'll bet it's a .280 Rem. Pretty perceptive, eh ?...<<grin>>...
