Kudos to both you and Curtis... He's a fortunate lad to have someone such as yourself as a mentor. -
Insufficient scope adjustment..Suggestions ?
Pygmy posted a topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I am experiencing a problem with a friend's rifle that I never have dealt with. It shoots WAAAAY to the left. I ran the windage adjustment all the way to the right..Still about a foot to the left at 25 YARDS !...The scope base has some windage adjustment.. I moved that as far as it would go and it still prints about 6" to the left at 25. The rifle is a Belgian Browning Hi Power Safari Grade in 30-06. The scope is a vintage Denver Redfield 3x9 with post&crosshair. The bases and rings are Buehler. I suspect possibly some torqing of the scope, but I'm not gunsmith savvy enough to deal with that.. Any suggestions ? At this point I'm ready to give him back the rifle and tell him to take it to someone with the knowledge and tools to correct the problem. -
I believe that a rifle tends to shoot a little flatter at high altitudes due to lower atmospheric pressure, but not enough to make a difference at the ranges that most of us shoot at. I consider 400 yards to be a long shot unless you have specialized long range gear. My own .280 , shooting 140 Nosler ballistic tips at around 3000 FPS, when sighted 4" high at 100, is 4" high at 200, 4" low at 300 and 12" low at 400. Those figures come from actually shooting groups at those ranges, not ballistic tables. That allows a "center rib cage" hold out to a little over 300 yards, and a "level with backline" hold at 400, which I consider the limit of my rifle and my ability. That is with a dead steady rest, of course. Most of the animals that I have killed at ranges from 250 to 400 yards have been shot from a prone position with a bipod or other solid rest.

Cool beans, Larry... When that magazine issue was published I was 20 years old, working as a grocery clerk in an A&P store, awaiting my draft notice from Uncle Sam...

A long time hunting buddy of mine is planning a high country mule deer hunt in Colorado. He wants me to work up a long range load for his M70 .280 Rem. He's replacing his 25 year old Tasco <<CRINGE>> scope with a 2.5x 10 power Vortex, I am not sure what model. SO, I'll finally get to play with one of the Vortex scopes that so many of the posters here speak so well of.

Hehehehehe...I like that, Dinsdale... A friend of mine had a similar one.. " You gotta keep the lures in the water and the arrows in the air "...

The purpose of predator hunting
Pygmy replied to Borngeechee's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
At one time in my life, a buddy of mine and I did a lot of fox hunting with an electronic caller. One reason we did it was because it was a heck of a lot of FUN, and it was very exciting when a fox came charging in to the call. An added bonus was the fact that fox pelts were selling for $50 to $75 each in those days. I used the proceeds from my fox pelts to purchase several guns, including the 20 gauge double barrel that has been my hands down favorite bird/rabbit gun for many years now. The pelts do make a nice trophy for display also. I have had several grey foxes and a couple of coyotes tanned and they look nice on the wall of a man cave..One thing I always wanted to do is have a red fox, a grey fox and a coyote tanned and hang them side by side, but I never got around to having a red fox tanned. I haven't hunted them in years...probably the main reason I don't do it anymore is because it works best at night, and I'm usually conked out in my recliner by 8:00 PM..LOL... -
Woodleigh makes a 240 grain soft point. Sierra makes a 240 grain Matchking, but it is designed as a target bullet rather than a hunting bullet. Barnes and Sierra used to make 250 grain .308" bullets, but no longer do. I have never seen 30-06 factory loads with bullets heavier than 220 grain.

Sorry I missed your special day.. Happy Birthday, my Friend.... Hope ya got LUCKY !!....Hehehehe...

Nice buck..Good shooting, Pilgrim...

Most Lynch Jet Slates have been bought up by collectors. Put it aside for your grandson and buy yourself a current pot call from any number of of manufacturers ( Cody perhaps) or use your box call. Pay attention to what Reeltime said. He is the real deal. A few authentic sounding yelps at the right time from the right place will kill more gobblers than a whole bunch of fancy calling. I speak from over 40 years of chasing turkeys with a reasonable amount of success. Good luck...Be careful and have fun...

Yes indeed, Grampy !! It's been my favorite deer cartridge for a number of years.. The Federal BT round would be a good factory load to try, but don't discount the relatively inexpensive 140 grain Remington green pointed soft points. I'm a handloader myself, but several of my non-reloading buddies use the Remingtons with good results. Have fun with your new toy..I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and you'll find it MUCH more pleasant to shoot than any shotgun with slugs, especially an Ithaca pump..<<OUCH>>....

Barnes makes the TSX in .323", 180 and 200 grain, Dan... Barnes bullets are very accurate in my rifles ..Seems like either would be a good choice in your 8MM wildcat. I love the terminal performance.. They kill very well, often retaining nearly 100% bullet weight, and don't seem to leave as much shredded/bloodshot meat as lead bullets..They also nearly ALWAYS leave an exit hole.

The early Nosler Ballistic tips had a lighter jacket, and acted like varmint bullets at high velocities. Nosler addressed this issue quite promptly and started making the BTs with heavier jackets. I killed a lot of game with 140 grain Nosler ballistic tips in my .280 rem and 7mm08 over the last 25 years or so, including some caribou bulls that probably went between 300 and 400 pounds live weight. I never had any problem, and I usually had an exit hole on deer sized game.

I have been snooping around gunbroker.com today...Bids are running from $1500 for a beater to as much as $5000 for a sweet one.. I think my buddy has a very valuable revolver..Unfortunately, he never sells ANYTHING..LOL.. Wish I could be like that...I have sold a bunch of guns over the years that I regret parting with.

Weatherby Mark 5 Deluxe 30-06 Leupold 3-9
Pygmy replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
I didn't think it would last long at that price. Now if it had been in a more INTERESTING caliber ( like .257 WM) Dinsdale or I might have taken it off your hands...<<grin>>... -
He's never fired it, and by the looks of it the original owner never fired it much either. Truly the Caddilac of wheelguns.

I was at a friend's house last night having a holiday drink. He showed me a 6" BBL. Colt Python that he had bought used probably 30 years ago and has never fired. It is about as close to perfect as any used gun I have ever seen. bright, high luster bluing, no dings and just a smidgen of holster wear around the muzzle. he has the box, owner's manual and documentation. Gorgeous revolver.. It's not for sale, but we wondered what prices a minty Python would bring these days..If I remember correctly, he paid $300 or $400 for it back in the early 1980s. I know that they have increased dramatically in price since that dude on " The Walking Dead" started blasting zombies with it a couple of years back, just like the M29 Smith .44 magnum did when Harry Callahan used one to blow away bad guys in the "Dirty Harry" movies.

-
Yup, Moog....I'll eat many things that other people won't touch, but I draw the line at Tripe.. Same with chitlins and brains...

From a couple of posts do I get the idea that this gun is prone to breaking open while carrying it..??.. That would be a show stopper for this Old Country Boy.. You know what Mr. MURPHY had to say about such things ..Tsk, Tsk...
