I'd like to see some loads actually chronographed... 15 % for a drop of 24" to 20" seems like a lot to me, especially when you consider that a case that size should work best with a medium burning powder like RL-15, Varget, or 4895, rather than one of the slow burners that tend to benefit more from longer barrels.

Any ethical hunter regards this illegal activity repugnant.. But when you get so worried about what the OTHER guy is doing that it takes away from your own enjoyment of the sport, well..There's something sad about that....

G-string...? Sounds like DENTAL FLOSS to me... Does it have anything to do with the elusive G-spot ?? I believe THAT qualifies as a theory also...At least I can't prove it exists.. Not that I really CARE..... Oh well..It's time for my NAP...<<smile>>.....

I would hesitate to buy any of these newly introduced chamberings until they have been around for a few years UNLESS you are a reloader and are willing to stock up on brass, or are able and willing to form brass from other readily available cases. I suspect that the .338 Fed could be formed from .308 win cases without too much hassle. However, ten years from now, factory ammo may not be available. Nothing against the chambering..It's just that there are so many overlapping cartridges out there today..They are not ALL going to survive.

The Kenai has good runs of all species of salmon, including the biggest king salmon in the world. There are lots of other places to fish, also, and some are not as crowded as the Kenai. Then of course, there is excellent salt water fishing for halibut, ling cod and rockfish. Just keep an eye over your shoulder for those hairy volkswagons while you are out and about. Many of the locals carry heavy caliber handguns or shotguns while fishing.

Those ocean run pacific salmon taste much better than the ones here in the Great Lakes Perhaps it's the diet..While the local salmon feed mostly on oily baitfish (alewives), the ocean run fish enjoy a much more varied diet, including shrimp and other crustaceans.

STILL, I would much rather HAVE a gun and not need it, than NEED a gun and not have it.. That happened to me many years ago, and involved two legged animals rather than four legged.. After that, I vowed never to be in that situation again, if I could help it..

The only time I remember going out in public in camo was when I showed up at the YMCA pool in my camoflage speedo.. Some kid told me that my wetsuit was wrinkled. I told him that I wasn't wearing a wetsuit...

I have seen then in Alaska and Ontario, but I have yet to see one here in Steuben County. They are here though ,and I have seen several trail cam pictures of fishers taken locally. I also have friends who trap and have caught ( and released) fishers.

Hehehehe...A buddy of mine and I learned the same thing when we were kids and decided that the hornets nest was a good target for our Daisy BB guns.. We didn't have a pool to dive into, though...
-
They are not in the least aggressive when they are AWAY from the nest...If they are feeding around you, you can swat at them, shoo them away or whatever..They will not sting unless you put your hand on them. But get close to thier nest and make a disturbance that they feel is threatening, and LOOK OUT !! Nasty SOBs !!! In my area, they have always been called white faced hornets, except by one old boy I used to work with at a pallet factory..He called them white ASSED hornets.

Not to change the subject, but just for conversation sake, Alaska has the very best strip joint I have ever been in.. " The Great Alaska Bush Company" in Anchorage... 35 dancers every night, caucasian, African American, Native American, oriental, asian... All gorgeous, not a dog in the bunch. It's just that aren't many BUSHES anymore..Seems to be the fashion trend these days..

I have had pizza in Juneau.. By far the worst pizza I have ever had.. Saying it SUCKED was a gross understatement. The chicken wings suck, too, and so does the barbeque. The reindeer sausage is very good, however, as is the beer battered halibut and steamed king crab legs.

About 40 years ago, when I could still remember how many deer and how many turkeys I had killed, I started keeping track on my desk calender at work.. Not that I was into numbers that much, but I just thought that it would be cool to be an old fart and know how many critters I had killed.. Well, I have been retired for a few years and and I have stopped keeping track in the last few years.. Last I can remember, I had killed about 120 turkeys and about 120 deer...Bucks and does were about 50/50... Now as far as out of state game goes, the numbers are much smaller and I can remember them. I have shot 13 caribou, 4 feral hogs, 2 moose, 2 elk, 2 pronghorns and one mule deer.

Same way in Colorado, unless you were born before 1949. I missed that date by one year.

Go get 'em NY hunter.. Looking forward to the story and pictures.. I'd come along, but I already have promised Wooly I'd stop by his place and help him entertain his pool guests...

Sounds to me like the deer blew or "snorted" at you. Most of the time it's a doe that does that, rather than a buck. When there is reason for alarm, any mature buck is going to separate himself from the does..That's how he has stayed alive long enough to become "mature".. You can wheeze, grunt, snort or fart all you want, but if you have been snorted at your chances of getting a good shot are close to ZERO, especially if you are dealing with an adult buck.

Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.

I'll have to to try it for homefries...Sounds good..

A circular hole like that in a tree is almost certainly made by a woodpecker. No telling what lives in it now, though.. Many other species of birds and animals nest in old woodpecker holes. It's similar to ground burrows. Woodchucks dig most of them, but many other animals such as skunks, possums, foxes and rabbits use woodchuck holes for shelter or a place to raise a family.
