No need to apologize for the E...I was just making conversation. Yes the Spanish M93 mausers DID kick a** in the Spanish American War... That's probably the biggest reason that the US adopted the Springfield 03 , which is basically a Mauser action. In fact it is so close that Springfield had to pay royalties to MAUSER for years to avoid paying penalties for patent infringement.

A number of years ago a local game warden was shot by his wife at home. Had a thing going with a local waitress and had just got home late at night. He survived and refused to press charges ..Their story was that she was "looking at his gun" and it went off. Twice...A double action revolver... She was looking at his gun, all right.. RIGHT down the barrel.. Hehehehehe..

Nice buck, Kevin..Congrats !!.. Those are some long browtines... Good job on the shot placement and recovery. The only blood trails I like to follow are WIDE and SHORT...<<smile>>....

Not to be picky, but it is the 30/40 KRAG. The name comes from its Krag-Jorgenson action. It was the first bolt action rifle that saw general use in the US military. Good medium game cartridge. The power level is between the 30-30 and the 30-06. It was our military cartridge for a fairly brief time, falling between the Trapdoor Springfield (45-70) and the 1903 Springfield ( 30-03 and then 30-06)..

Glad you are OK... Falling trees ( or rotted poles) is an inherently dangerous activity.. A lot of freaky stuff can happen. Lots of folks with lots of experience have bought the farm due to incidents just like what happened to you.

I could have had some fun with THAT post too, but I refrained.. Aren't I beeing a GOOOOOOD doobie these days ? I think you should give me a gold star..<<smile>>...

Me too...Like a rabbit hunt on a bigger scale.. I'd go on a dog/deer hunt in a minute. Calling elk during the rut can be similar to spring gobbler also..Except the game has a NOSE and might weigh 700 pounds.

Thanks...In the 70s my ex wife and I were MAKING babies... Well, actually, just ONE baby..But we did a lot of practicing...<<smile>>...

VERY cool !! Fortunately he had LOTS of river for the takeoff... I am not crazy about flying commercial, but I love bush planes. At one time in my life I spent time in Beavers, Otters, Cessnas ( 180s to 206s) and Cubs..Probably my favorite was landing and taking off on tundra with wheel equipped Supercubs. You guys got a couple of great bulls and did an exemplary job of meat care.. I'd love to do that again, but I'm too old and poor... Thanks for sharing..Brings back fond memories..<<sigh>>...

Ok, Elmo...I know I'm an old fart and am not exactly in tune with a lot of the more RECENT things going on.. But I gotta ask.. What the heck is the ORKO club..?.. Sounds like an organization dedicated to studying some extinct flightless bird !

Yeah, but Wooly wears SHORTS when he hunts.. Besides that, I heard from a reliable source that his breath smells and he doesn't love Jesus !!

One landowner who used to give me permission to hunt likes them because they are very effcient at hunting woodchucks in hayfields. He no longer has any chuck holes to deal with. There are still woodchucks around, but the only places they can survive is road ditches and around peoples houses. Farmers and landowners in general hate them. On private land that I hunt on in Ontario, one condition of recieving permission to hunt is to agree to shoot every coyote you see. I personally don't really hate them, but I have no qualms about shooting them for thier fur value or to stay on good terms with the landowners who allow me to hunt thier properties.

Question on choke of H & R
Pygmy replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
If it has rifle sights it is no doubt a slug gun. As long as it is a smoothbore, chances are that it is either cylinder bore or IC. The good news is, IC often shoots excellent patterns with steel shot. I use an IC tube in my Rem 11-87 for all waterfowl, and in my Browning Citori, I use IC/Mod. Never used a cylinder bore for steel, but skeet works pretty good. and that's between cylinder and IC.. -
I'm sure Paula is gazing wistfully at that picture and thinking... " What a beautiful picture...I wonder if he's wearing his shorts ? "

Sounds like you got a good deal, Eagle.. That 06 is a shooter for sure. My story involves a Canadian friend of mine. This took place a few years back when national gun registration was taking place in Canada. All firearms had to be registered and many people who owned guns and no longer hunted were selling them very cheap rather than go through the bother and expense of registering guns that they no longer used. My friend was in the market for a .410 shotgun. he heard of an old fellow who had a .410, a .22 rifle, and a .303 rifle for sale. My buddy bought all three for $100, PLUS a gun cabinet, a couple knives, some ammo and some other accessories. He sold the .22 and the .303 for $100 each. He doubled his money, and still had the .410 he had wanted plus the gun cabinet and other stuff.

Years ago it was fairly rare to see a black squirrel around here..If I was lucky I might see one a year. For years I refrained from shooting one. These days, while not nearly as numerous as greys, black squirrels are fairly common. It's not unusual to see a couple in a morning's hunt. For the last few years, I have considered them as just another squirrel. I have shot 17 grey squirrels and one black so far this season...In recent years I have shot 35-40 squirrels a year, and usually 3 or 4 were black squirrels. Up in Ontario, where I hunt gobblers in the spring, nearly all the squirrels are black. Perhaps one in 50 is grey. 25 years ago I hunted deer a few times in PA near Eldred, in Mckean County. In that area greys and blacks were about 50/50...

Out with the old, in with the new....R 700 VTR 308

She's a shooter for sure, John.. It may be tough to find a handload that beats those factory loads. Those brakes are sure enough LOUD. I had a ported .338 Win Mag that was a real ear blaster. One thing I do is wear a pair of string connected foam earplugs around my neck. Often when stand hunting, especially in relatively open areas, there is time to put them in before you shoot. And of course, I never shoot off the bench or practice without hearing protection. I'm already half deaf from shooting and I need to preserve what little hearing that I have left. -
I just checked my 1949 NY hunting and fishing rule book. As far as I can determine, buckshot was not legal for deer anywhere in the state at that time. I suspect that at SOME time it was legal in the "dacks" but it was a lot of years ago.
-
Not trying to start a pissing contest, just asking. I don't remember buckshot being legal for deer ANYWHERE in New York, at least not since 1950 or so. I may be mistaken, but I'm wondering if the buckshot use in the Adirondacks was prior to that.
-
There must some data out there. Do areas where buckshot is required or commonly used have higher hunting accident rates than areas where it is illegal ? I remember the wailing, rending of hair and gnashing of teeth here in Steuben County a few years ago when rifles were first allowed after years of shotgun (slug) hunting. Somehow those dozens of rifle related hunting accidents that many predicted never happened. I suspect that a safe hunter will be a safe hunter regardless of the implement, and of course, a moron will be a moron.
