Watched a dog take down a deer today
Adkhunter1590 replied to The_Real_TCIII's topic in General Chit Chat
I had a German Shepard that was a deer killer. When I was younger and lived up in the adks we let them run as we had nothing but woods around the house. During the winter our Shepard would bring home pieces of deer all the time. I had to ride across the road a bunch of times to find her after she wouldn’t come back for hours and found her running down deer or tearing up ones she already killed more times than I can count. I don’t think she ever really ate much of them but would dismember them and bring home legs and stuff to drop at the front door. We always had good deep snow winters back then so I’m sure that played a big part in how she was able to run down so many deer. She only did it for maybe 3-4 years before she either lost interest or got lazy. But it was the only dog I ever had or seen that would kill deer on a regular basis in the winter months. My black lab that was a couple years younger than her usually ran with her but I never saw him touch a deer, he always seemed more interested in the chase rather than the kill. The lab ran off a bunch of times when he was young and I’d find him a day or so later way out in the middle of a 800 acre tract chasing deer or just running around like a nut job. But he never seemed to kill anything. Wolves kill for sport, google it and you’ll see lots of pictures of dead animals that wolves will run down, kill and leave to rot. I guess it’s a canine thing. -
Trump in trouble again
Adkhunter1590 replied to Hunter007's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
He did nothing wrong even if he did call them shit hole countries. It’s just the truth. It’s unfortunate there are so many thin skinned sissies in this country who can’t handle a couple words. No one wants to live in those countries after growing up in the USA. Compared to us, they are shit holes. Not our fault or our problem. But we shouldn’t be censored just because some people get their feelings hurt. -
Who all trail rides their atv utv ?

This thread rejuvenated my desire to go to Hatfield McCoy trails. I’ve been poking around online and I think I have the wife talked into taking a week trip down there this summer. My FIL has a 4 seater Kawasaki teryx I’m sure he will let us borrow and take down there. I think my two boys will love it! -

Sure would be. I’ve heard rumors about trail systems in the works. But it’s probably a long shot and many years down the road. I’ll hold on to some hope, but won’t hold my breath. -

NY is terrible for atvs unless you own a lot of land. Just about everyone who rides a lot is pretty much forced to ride illegally at some point or another and it sucks that it has to be like that. We need a big trail system in this state very badly. Would be a great thing and I bet it would do the local small town economies some good. -
Very pretty animal for sure. And ya I already knew I couldn’t keep it or anything, which really sucks because the mount would be awesome. Someone already called DEC and they are supposedly headed over to pick it up sometime today. Such a waste of a beautiful animal. There really should be some sort of permit you can get so you can mount birds like this that are found dead of natural causes. I’d even be more than happy to pay for it if I had to.

We have a lot of eagles and hawks here and it’s neat to see the battles that go down between them on a daily basis. I don’t know what they are fighting about, but they sure do a lot of it. There’s plenty of pigeons for them to all feast on, so it can’t be fighting over the lack of food, must be a territorial thing I would guess.

There’s been this snowy owl seen flying around the property here at work hunting all the pigeons the last week. Yesterday the yard guy tells me he saw a bald eagle chasing down the snowy owl around all the grain bins. They disappeared from his sight for a bit until about an hour later he spots the snowy owl dead on the ground right outside the back door to the mill in a snow bank with blood all over the place. The eagle must of won the fight. What a pretty bird. Would make a cool mount. I rested him on top a barrel to take some pics quick.

If you could feel the drafts rushing into this living room right now, you’d think you were outside lol. We got a bunch of little heaters but they aren’t doing much lol
-
Well we’ve prepared the best we could for it[emoji15]. 1 kerosene heater, the entire buddy heater set (little buddy, buddy and big buddy haha). And 1 electric heater, blankets draped over all the doors and closed ourselves into the living room lol. I even brought two sleeping bags to make sure I slept nice and warm at least!

I’m on the south end. My buddy has a camp here so we just fish out in front of it up and down the shore line. There’s 10 inches of ice out here. Haven’t seen another person out fishing or riding yet. Looks like we are the crazy ones lol. It was pretty cold today but not all that bad when you stayed moving.

It’s not a insult. It’s just the truth. If you feel so offended then sorry but that’s your problem. I’m certainly allowed to have my own opinion that I’ve come to over years of experience. I worked in the hunting industry for long enough to see what’s what. You don’t like that or my opinion, o well, keep scrolling past my comments. And just to be clear, you proved no one wrong, only that your thin skinned. Good luck to ya

Ok since your not seeing it, I’ll go along with your bs. Mid western whitetail hunters as a whole I think are better than NY hunters as a whole. How does that sound? Was I clear enough this time? Now you can’t go pick a animal that doesn’t even live across the entire west, not to mentio antelope are like cattle to them out there. Hence why the locals drive around and pop them at long ranges for fun. They love ya east coast folk paying lots of money for speed goats. Hell there’s more antelope in Wyoming than people.
-
Lol you pick one animal and the laziest possible way to hunt as your example? I guess your one of these narrow minded guys around here[emoji849]. How about elk hunters or the mid western bow hunters? Elk guys are nuts, hiking miles and miles In search of the one. Most of those guys are way more skilled than your average eastern deer hunter. QDMA was invented in the mid west. I could go on and on but you’ll just blow it off because you must know so much more than someone who’s lived there for years and guided hunts for years.

Champlain bound! Hoping for some good ice and to not freeze to death in the unheated camp.

So again, no good reasons to be against it other than personal safety concerns. Plenty of people have big safety concerns about driving on the highway, and you know what those people do? They stay off the highway! I really can’t believe I just read that Doc wants to further restrict hunting hours, you gotta be kidding me right? So what’s it gonna be Doc, end all hunting At 3pm so we can all make you and others like you feel better? If getting shot is of that big of a concern to you, why are you hunting somewhere that it is even a possibility. Don’t hunt public and don’t put up with trespassers. Your fear of getting shot is now fixed!

Well we could go with 30 mins after sunset just like everyone else in the country. Don’t make this complicated because it’s not. It ends at 30 mins because after that it’s getting dark as hell. Anything after 30 mins is just stupid, but up to that time is still plenty safe, proven by decades upon decades of use. I still haven’t seen anyone who’s against the 30 min after sunset provide some sort of clear proof that it’s some how more dangerous or detrimental to the hunting community. Other than some people claiming they can’t themselves see well enough isn’t a good enough excuse
-
That’s just it. Life isn’t a board game. There’s a lot of gray area. Board games are black and white, there are rules for every move. I think you and Doc miss the point completely. You two want to crucify me and paint me as some monster of a person because I’ll shoot a deer at 544 instead of 524. Go explain that situation to someone who doesn’t hunt and you’ll see the reaction. Whether or not you agree with what I do makes no difference to me in the slightest, but the flamboyant, over exaggerated claims that have been made are just that. Go ahead and shake your fingers and stick your noses in the air, your doing it to millions of people, not just me. If we number up the amount of hunters who are covered under 30 min before and after, I bet you’ll see you are the minority in this gray area
-
Why are there so many wussy cry baby pansys in this state? You people do realize the vast majority of states go by the 30 min before and after rule and I have yet to hear or any state thinking of changing it because of people being shot outside hours. The few times it’s happened in this state proves nothing other than what anyone who’s spent a lot of time hunting in the West, that east coast hunters are generally much less skilled or knowledgeable as western hunters. I’ve guided, so I know damn well what kind of hunters come from here, and trust me, they don’t paint a pretty picture for NY. I’d love to hear how there could possibly be so many “reckless” states yet the news isn’t covered in deaths from hunters shooting 19 mins past sunset. If this were a serious problem, the world would know about it. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, a handful of deaths over the course of a couple decades does not even cause a blip on the radar for important issues. And please spare me the disappointed parent lectures, I sleep just fine and look at myself in the mirror with a smile every day. Someday you people will pull your heads from the sand and realize there’s much bigger issues in the world than someone shooting a few mins past sunset. The fact that you think it’s reckless or dangerous doesn’t mean squat, you and my mother had the same concerns about my teenage self owing a motorcycle that did 200mph. Should we outlaw street bikes now to?
-
The chances of that ever happening to me are slim to none. Being caught by DEC doing anything is slim to none. They are spread thin and there’s more than enough people around here jacking deer all year long and road hunting to keep them busy. DEC has a big presence in Albany only 25 miles away, yet my local feed store sells pallets of deer corn daily. You tell me how worried I should be getting caught shooting a few mins past sunset [emoji849]
-
Lol what!? How in the hell can you not still see pretty damn well at 30 mins past. Unless your down in some bottom loaded with pines, you should still be able to see 100 yards or more depending on terrain. Almost every other state out there is 30 min past sunset, with very little if no problems because of it. Laws don’t fix stupid people. So for the rest of us who have a brain and are normal people can easily distinguish what’s dark and what’s not. Sunset is not dark, period. There’s still plenty of light left at 30 min past to make good clean kills. The range at which those kills can be made will vary from location to location, but you can still see damn good at 30 min past.
-
Unlike him I know what I’m doing. Also can bet I have better eye sight than just about anyone. Anyone who thinks 30 mins past sunset is too dark to see needs to head to their nearest eye doctor
-
I hunt dark to dark...if I can see, I’m shooting. Forget that sunrise to sunset crap. Sue me, crucify me, whatever makes someone feel better about themselves. But I’m still shooting, catch me if ya can🤣

Well that’s a wrap. It was a good season even though I went buckless again. But I saw a lot of bucks and I have some nice ones that I know made it so far as of Sunday morning. Next year will be the year for me at this property I can already feel it. The food plots and other land management things are making a big impact and I can only hope it continues to get better next year. Most of all it’s another season making it through in one piece. No treestand accidents or anything for me or my hunting buddies. This I am glad for. It has been a good time in this live from the woods thread, always the best thread of the year in my opinion. Congrats to everyone who drew blood and a hat tip to everyone else eating a little tag soup like me[emoji1303]
