  1. My one buddy shot at a doe yesterday. But he missed. Pretty far shot through a bunch of brush so I'm told. I saw a couple yesterday morning but they were about 300 yards away. Hoping to get one today though! A guy that lives in my hometown is hunting somewhere out in Ohio and he shot a real nice 10pt I saw on FB. Not a lot of shooting going on around here either. The super cold temps seem to have them laying low
  2. Well no luck today. All of us hunted until noon then came back to the cabin for some lunch and went back out around 3. A shot on a neighboring property spooked a few closer by my buddies but no shots. It was frigid today. So glad we have the heaters. It's the one and only thing keeping us out there lol. We got venison burgers being cooked right now and the beer is ice cold. After a few beers and a belly full of venison it's nighty night, back at it bright and early
  3. Nice! I went to Walmart to get the bigger one but they were sold out. Had to settle for the little one. Figured it was better than nothing at all! I have more windows open than I probably should in the blind right now with the heater on and it's very warm in here. I'm wondering how long a bottle of propane is gonna last. The box says 5 and a half hours but I'm kinda doubting that. Might have to run to Walmart and pick up a few more bottles
  4. Thank you! Started getting a little chilly in here so I cranked this little guy up. Almost feels like cheating! Lol
  5. 4 degrees here this morning! We are feeling good though after a nice 10 hour sleep. It's always awesome to have a comfy cabin to get some quality sleep in. Don't get much sleep at home so it's a nice change! Pancakes, bacon and coffee getting whipped up now then we will be headed out to our blinds. Let's see how long everyone lasts in this cold, hope those buddy heaters keep us going!
  6. Do it growie! Lots of fun to get away and hunt new places. Doesn't have to break the bank either! Buddy heater party! These things are simply the best inventions ever for cold late season hunts
  7. Made it to Ohio. Drove through snow and ice all night but we made it. Cabin is awesome and the property looks good from what we've seen since arriving 45 mins ago. Fresh deer tracks in the yard around the cabin is a promising sign. It's COLD here!! 8 degrees at the moment. All 3 of us decided on bringing ground blinds and buddy heaters after seeing the forecast. Glad we did because I really wouldn't want to hang a stand right now. Can't wait till tomorrow morning!
  8. O and I'll be the first to admit that when college is free, kids will be very likely to blow it away on partying. I know because I did it. Like I said in my previous post, I went for a year but it was fully funded by my grandmother. She was filthy rich and I knew damn well that money was nothing but a drop in the bucket for her estate. In my defense, I repeatedly told my parents I didn't want to go and fought going all the way to the day they finally gave in and let me purse guiding instead of college. I spent way more time partying and sleeping in class than anything. I did pay attention to my military history class cause I'm into history but everything else meant nothing to me. But once I got out west for guide school that's when life really started for me. I met some awesome people and had amazing experiences. Wouldn't trade those years for anything. I know damn well I'd never have the life skills I do now if I had stayed in college.
  9. Not necessarily. If you can be trained to perform a certain craft you can absolutely be trained to do something else. Especially if you want it. I went from full time hunting guide, to CDL truck operator when I moved back to NY and then ended up getting into the millers union at the flour mill here in Albany. Milling is even something that colleges out in the western state have 4 year programs for. Which I think is dumb because anyone of fairly high intelligence can learn to do it without the 100k student loan . I work with a guy who went to college for milling in Kansas, he makes the same amount of money I do and we perform the same job. Except I don't have a 800 dollar a month payment on student loans. Sometimes being able to take your skills with you to a new area is a good thing. I eventually plan on moving my family back out west. And by being a miller for the 5th largest mill in the country, I can get a job as a miller anywhere in the country now. We all actually get job offers on a pretty regular basis in states all over the place. If we can get our youth trained in just one thing, they can make it in this world, could it require a move, maybe. But that's a lot better than living in mom and dads basement until their 45 working min wage.
  10. I seriously hope it doesn't get passed. We need less lazy "college educated" idiots and more hard working people. You don't need a college degree to make good money, just need ambition. I went to college for a year before I realized what a waste of my time it was. I spent the next 4 years living a more fulfilling life than most people have in a lifetime. And now I make over 80k a year with no degree at 26yrs old If any type of schooling were to be free, I'd be in favor of trade schools being funded over regular colleges. Let's get people trained to be skilled in a certain trade/craft. I think that would do more to strengthen the backbone of the middle class than giving away free liberal arts degrees.
  11. It's no different than the guys who travel to Kansas and eat tag soup and get upset because they didn't see 20 160inch or bigger bucks. There are big bucks out there, just not behind every tree like the tv shows make it out to be. Without spending big money on high end outfitters, you obviously need to lower expectations when hunting public land in any state. Less than 24 hours from now I'll be on my way to Ohio. Cold front is moving in tomorrow and bringing a couple inches of snow. Hopefully this gets the deer moving. Ohio tag is either sex so I'm going with mentality of "it's brown, it's down". I'm not waiting for a big buck, more meat for my freezer will make me happy. Just getting away for 5 days is the only satisfaction I need.
  12. Headed to Ohio tomorrow evening. Area we are going to is supposedly getting some snow too. Gonna be cold as hell while we are there too. Thinking ground blinds and buddy heaters for this trip! Will post some pics of the trip as we go!
  13. Some of it yes. Ohio's ATV laws are pretty much a huge grey area. There are areas of some public lands that have designated atv trails, Wayne national forest is one of those places. Other areas only state that motorized vehicles must stay on the trails already in place. After witnessing multiple others using atvs at the area we go, and the lack of any signs saying it's against the rules, we started using ours. The website for the public land we hunt doesn't state anywhere that atvs are prohibited, only that "all motorized vehicles" remain on designated trails. And with the abundance of two track atv trails all over the 15 thousand acres, it's pretty safe to assume it's alright.
  14. Shouldn't see many if any piles of corn on state land. Baiting is only legal on private land in Ohio these days. I think they changed that law within the last couple of years if I remember correctly. But there's always those couple idiots who do it regardless. I only saw one bait pile on public land 3 years ago. With the amount of land we've covered over the last couple of years I'd say that's pretty good. Ohio public land can absolutely have some gnarly areas. A lot of it can be pretty much impossible to hunt or even walk. This is why we started bringing 4 wheelers to get back away from the guys walking from the roads. Also helps to find the most secluded access points. It can be hard but it's doable.
  15. My old man had a cap and bedrug on his old F250. While at first I thought the bed rug was dumb. I grew to like it over the years. It held up surprisingly well considering the beating we gave it. My parents have always had 3-5 dogs at a time and bring them on camping trips and stuff which made the bed rug pretty useful in that regard. Dogs were comfy back there. One time my dad blew his knee out waterskiing while we were camping and wasn't able to bend his leg enough to get into the cab of the truck for a 3 hour ride home to a local doctor. So we put him in the back of the truck with the dogs haha. He claimed that the bed rug made the ride very comfy and was worth the money he spent just for that ride alone. We did stain it up with deer blood and other stuff over the years but it never bothered us, just clean what you can and forget about it. If you have a cap on the truck, a bed rug makes a solid companion to it.
  16. I'm headed to Ohio next week for the late muzzy season. We hunt public land and I can tell you first hand that there is ALOT of hunters in the woods during any of the firearm seasons. We hunt a chunk of public land that's 15 thousand acres and still run into a lot of people if we don't go far enough back. With 8 guys your going to want to hunt either Wayne national forest or another very large chunk of land. Which there are several to choose from. The deer herd seems to be thinning in Ohio the last 5 years. If you lurk around some Ohio hunting forums, you'll see many people griping about declining deer populations and that it's getting harder each year to find a big mature buck. That's not to say that Ohio doesn't have big bucks, but it seems the quality nor quantity are what they were 5-7 years ago. If your going there with high intentions of shooting a massive buck, prepare to leave empty handed. If your going with the large group to have fun more than anything, you'll be glad you went regardless of deer taken.
  17. Never found a brand new maxima blu arrow that I hit a doe with. Was a close shot and I know I watched it go through her and it should of been right behind her in the ground with the steep angle I shot it at. All I can think is that the damn thing just buried itself deep as hell in the soft mucky ground that was there. Sucks loosing a brand new high dollar arrow the first time you shoot it
  18. Uptown, why do you even bother reading, posting or believing in these "polls"?? Haven't you seen what a fool you make yourself out to be by believing these polls to be accurate. I would think just about anyone who's lived through the past year could be smart enough to have come to the conclusion that these polls are nothing but worthless garbage made up by people scrambling to make their jobs relevant.
  19. Well I think I'm gonna be missing out the last couple days. I came down with a nasty chest cold Saturday morning and it just got worse through yesterday. Both my little guys are sick too. So I sat inside with them all day yesterday and even had to call off from work last night...which I never ever usually do....but this is the sickest I've been in years. Feeling a little better this morning finally but the wife is yelling at me saying I gotta go see a doctor today. Bummer. Even though I didn't go out to hunt yesterday we did see a couple deer. They were circling my truck looking for the corn they are smelling lol. I have about 600-800 pounds of corn in the bed of my truck that I still need to unload into the corn bin I have in the chicken coop. It was funny as hell watching those deer circle my truck trying to find what all the birds were eating out of the bed.
  20. Glad ya like the wolf! It's a sweet shooting gun. Can't beat it for the price!
  21. Lol. Had to do the same thing years ago. Should of seen the look on my mothers face when she came home to see me and my dad carving away at a 6 pointer hanging from the beam in the living room. She wasn't thrilled. We were at least nice enough to put a tarp down to catch the blood and stuff! Lol
  22. Redfield scopes are made by Leupold. They come with the same warranty and quality but you'll find redfield scopes to be priced better. And I'm pretty sure just about every decent scope these days is fog proof. That was a technology advancement many years ago that used to be reserved for higher end scopes. But these days it's found on just about every scope out there
  23. Walked around yesterday in partridge run. Saw a couple does but no bucks. Headed back over there today with my buddy again to see if we can find some tracks and stalk one down. This new snow should make it much quieter walking!
