I mean how loud can it be? I could probably work the bolt on any of my bolt actions without making too much noise, so I can't imagine not being able to dampen the sound when switching off a safety.

Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
steve863 replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
You are correct about NYC having it's own set of rules. If you are traveling to another destination via airplane for a hunting trip, I think you'd be fine, but like you I don't think I'd take the chance. Not worth it. Those people behind you on line who are looking at you in horror when you are asked to open the gun case might yet get the last laugh when they take you away in handcuffs. I sure as hell would not want to be that person they are taking away! -
Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
steve863 replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
Not rubbing it in, I was just wondering. You could have done a whole lot better with the .308. That has enough punch for the smaller big game. Handguns or AR .223 are probably like mosquito bites on the bigger critters. I don't think you need to spend $3000 on a rifle for Africa. I know you can find something in one of the popular African calibers for less that will serve you just as well. If you aren't hunting buffalo or lion, you can take lots of game with .300 or .338 magnum calibers which will cost even less than guns in .375, .416, .458 or similar African rounds. Even budget priced rifles shoot great these days. -
Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
steve863 replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
Glad you had some fun, but I am still trying to figure out why go thru all the trouble of taking pistols and AR's to Africa, when bullets fired from such firearms probably just bounce off the majority of animals that roam that continent? It just seems like a hell of a LONG way to go to just do some plinking at rodents and rabbits. You could have gone to Arizona or other places out west for far less money and heck of a lot less hassle. You are saying that next time you will take some real firepower to Africa like a .375H&H. I am just wondering why it took you a trip over there to find out that a gun like that is better suited for Africa then the pistols and AR's you did take?? -
If you guys have taken as many as you claim, you are well ahead of most others who hunt LI. To put down 10 or more deer takes a good bit of time, especially with a bow, so you guys obviously have a good deal of time on your hands to hunt. The majority of hunters don't. If the LI hunters have been doing such a great job, why is it that the deer range keeps expanding on LI?? Years ago, they were only in Suffolk, and now they are common sights in many places in Nassau county as well. Won't be long before they start approaching Queens and Brooklyn. Yes, every deer taken, is one less deer out there to breed, but in the scheme of things you guys are far from winning the population control battle. I realize getting land access is a big issue, but what can you do about that? I can understand peoples reluctance to allow hunters into their backyards. It's hard enough getting access in rural areas these days where there's a lot more land involved, so why should anyone be surprised of the reluctance of the suburbanites on LI? Things won't get better in that respect.
-
99.9% LOL! That's BS right there, and no sense in arguing with someone who thinks that! Maybe in your own head, but not anywhere near 99.9% of the hunters who hunt.
-
The DEC wants deer killed and they don't care about age, nor should they really. Many hunters don't either. You trophy hunters of course do, but hunting seasons were never put in place just to satisfy you trophy hunters.

Really Cuomo again
steve863 replied to bowtech2's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
That pretty much sums it up. Absolutely NO difference in the parties in regards to illegal immigration. They BOTH don't want it stopped. They may not want it stopped for different reasons, but they DON'T want it stopped. All the talk about stopping it is just lip service as if they are really doing something about it. It could be stopped very quickly if they wanted to, but the truth is they don't. Illegals immigrations benefits to the economy outweigh the minuses in the eyes of business and government, thus it won't be stopped. -
Really Cuomo again
steve863 replied to bowtech2's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
So you really think that Astorino would have won NYC if he was very anti-fracking? I could tell you that it wouldn't have earned him more than a handful of votes. The people who voted for Cuomo don't even have a clue of what fracking is. -
You want suburbia throughout the rest of the state? On LI you mostly have bowhunting only, and very little access for hunters along with NO natural predators. That is the ONLY reason the bucks get big there. Do you think hunters really want to see the same scenario throughout the rest of the state? I don't think so.
-
So 35 of the 40 deer he butchered were bucks, and he thinks the hunters have done a great job of controlling the deer population on LI?? How many does were passed while these guys were waiting for their trophy bucks (15 of which were P&Y. LOL)? I bet that most of these guys won't even go out anymore, now that they got their trophies. I realize that land access is an issue on LI, but I still say that hunters, especially since most of the hunting is bow only, put very LITTLE hurt on the deer population on LI.

Don't forget to get Get out and VOTE Tuesday November 4th
steve863 replied to HuntingNY's topic in General Chit Chat
Seriously? You are 30 and never voted? I definitely didn't vote in every election, didn't vote in the last presidential election actually, since I knew for sure that Mickey Mouse would have a better chance of winning NY then Romney did. I was getting tired of holding my nose at the ballot box. However, I made damned sure I voted against Cuomo yesterday, eventhough I knew he'd win. It was just for the principle if nothing else. I can't stand the bastard for way more reasons than just the SAFE act, so I made sure I cast my vote against him just for my own satisfaction if for nothing else. -

How do you figure that? Astorino won the majority of counties upstate, so how did it hurt him? In NYC fracking is a NON-issue(just as the SAFE act is, too), so it most definitely didn't hurt him there. He had little hope winning NYC, no matter what he thought of the issue. -

How about the Koreans? Lots of them in Queens. I see lots of them being politically active, too. Most of them have strong christian values, there are Korean churches everywhere, yet they must be voting democrat if Queens went for Cuomo by such an overwhelming margin?? -

Jesus Christ, blacks are NOT the majority in NYC. Even if they all voted for Cuomo, you'd think the rest of these groups wouldn't be? I did notice that young people seem to be voting more than ever. That surely may have something to do with it, since young people seem to be very liberal minded, no matter what background they came from, especially in NYC. The older people still have traditional views on many things, so I don't know where the hell they go when it's time to vote?? If they are voting for Cuomo, then THEY are the ones to be blamed above all others. Just hard to figure out. -

steve863 replied to HuntingNY's topic in General Chit Chat
I still can't understand it. Most people think that NYC is full of blacks, who traditionally vote democrat, but if you make your way around the boroughs, you also have plenty of Italians, Irish, Poles, Asians, etc. who are generally a lot more conservative and hard working. Even many Hispanics have more conservative views than blacks. These groups either didn't vote or they were somehow snookered by Cuomo also. Simply too difficult for me to put into perspective of what Cuomo's appeal might be to them? -
Burt, the big one on your property has a tatoo also. It says, "See ya, Burt (but not during hunting season!)" "Age 4.5". LOL

I do believe you are right. Liability insurance will be the first thing he will pass. It will probably be simple for him to do, too. The majority of people in the state don't own guns, so they won't give a crap about such a law that makes it even more difficult for gun owners. If they didn't give a crap about the rest of the SAFE act, they surely won't about this. -

steve863 replied to HuntingNY's topic in General Chit Chat
Yes, that was interesting. Cuomo even won a few counties upstate, and it was close in quite a few others. People shouldn't forget that there are people looking for handouts in rural areas, too. This mentality is not exclusive to NYC. The gun issue alone was definitely NOT going to get Cuomo defeated in this state. The numbers just don't add up for us. -
Now if he only had a thermos with coffee hooked to his other antler!
-
Especially for the all day sits, I would think it's better to have something warm to drink than cold bland water. It seems like the younger generation are hooked on water, but from my experience having something to warm you up on those cold days can definitely make one a bit more comfortable.
-
Luckily I've never had to wait until the next day to recover a deer. Honestly, I don't think I'd be very comfortable in consuming it unless the temperatures were below freezing. I know people have probably survived after eating deer that were recovered the next day in similar conditions, but I think I'd give it a pass. I'd tag the deer, but I doubt the meat would end up in my freezer.
-
I do bring a small bottle of water, but not to drink! I use it to wash off knife, hands, or something else if I get it bloodied. Sometimes I don't even use it, but I do keep some water in the backpack. I don't understand the water to drink thing either. If I am going to bring anything to drink, it will be in a thermos with something warm like tea or coffee. If it's 10 degrees out, water will be frozen and make me feel even colder when I drink it, so NO water for me. Hiking in the summer months is one thing, but hunting in freezing weather it makes little sense to bring water to drink.
-
I am not against xbows either, but I wouldn't take one if someone was giving me one for nothing. if I ever saw a clumsy contraption and a half, it's got to be an xbow!!
