Oh man, I could have a field day with this statement, Elmo. I won't go there, though. WNY was offended with the lead balls in the butt cheek yesterday. LOL
-
I am a sorry excuse for a bowhunter, definitely prefer a gun, but Culver is absolutely right. Chances of having one get away wounded are higher with a bow, but there is no doubt that more end up wounded during gun season just because there are way more gun hunters hunting.

Who Else is Cocked, Locked and Ready to Rock Opening Day?
steve863 replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
Us boys at least are cocked. I don't how the girls here would describe it, though! LOL -
Hard to believe, ain't it? She kills deer with her bow at 50 yards and uses NO sights. Makes the rest of us look like sissy's with our 7 rainbow colored sight pins!! LOL
-
Pygmy, how about some chipmunk stew at Growalot's? I'm sure she has a good story or five for us! LOL You don't even need to call her if you decide to come over. She has a radar on top of her house that detects all movement up to 10 miles away so she'll know your coming. LOL
-
Ahh well, I'll be there for the pig meat, but I think I'll pass on the blood pudding. I have to leave some room for the chipmunk stew at Growalot's afterwards. LOL
-
Damn, you Italians are one step above barbarians! Just kidding, I better be actually! LOL So you guys have one guy stay behind and not hunt to look after the pig while it's roasting? Wouldn't it be funny if the pig was left alone for a while and a bear helped himself to it? A bunch of mad and hungry Italians you guys would be!! LOL
-
Wow, that pig slaughter does sound interesting. Do you let the guys who didn't get a shot at a deer shoot the pig with their deer rifles? A kill is a kill after all! LOL
-
Yeah, just after we all figured out how to move in that 600 lbs gun safe on the other thread to have the guns locked up good and tight from the Mrs. now we see this! LOL I wonder if they will be aiming for the liver or elsewhere???

I tell you Growalot you have more doozy stories than I have hair on my head!! LOL God love you!!!

I think if someone wants to go up to the $400 plus range (as are some Leupolds these days) on a 3-9x or similar scope for a deer rifle then the Zeiss Conquest is in my opinion the absolute best. You can get it for $399 or less. I have never looked thru a clearer scope in my life. They are clearer than the Swarovski's which cost twice as much. I think it's quite a scope for that price range, definitely clearer and brighter than any Leupold or Nikon I have ever looked thru and I've looked thru quite a few.
-
You surely won't go wrong with a Leupold. Nikon's are really good too, and I think these days you can get a nice one for less than a Leupold. I honestly don't think there are any BAD scopes out there. The more expensive ones have better glass, are more waterproof and maybe more rugged, but in general most any scope made will probably get the job done and last if you don't abuse it.

I would vote to keep it as is just as a safety factor for those that would shoot before the legal 1/2 before and after just like they do with the current law. I have never felt that it's a federal offense to shoot a few minutes before or after legal time, and I highly doubt that there are too many hunters out there who will load their guns only after legal time and unload the exact second legal time is over no matter how much they swear they would never shoot after legal hours. I do understand that one is subject to penalties if they are caught, but other than on public land the odds of getting caught are virtually ZERO in most places. Anyway my vote is to keep it as is, just as an added safety factor.
-
I honestly don't get it. Never saw a dead deer get up. I think anyone with any hunting experience can easily tell a dead deer from one that is still alive. If you want to wrestle with a live buck, then one is definitely looking for trouble. I have a hunch that is what happened here.

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
steve863 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I guess if one wants to keep their mind in the gutter, there is lots of gun and shooting terminology that can sound a bit dirty. LOL I must warn you boys not to get me started. -

So what is a .223 or .22-250? They are centerfires firing a .22 caliber bullet. -

OK, that does make sense. I think we also need to take into consideration the size of their butts. Maybe we could use a sort of formula like Culver mentioned above? Like how many lead balls would fit into one of their cheeks for adequate gauge selection? LOL -

Yeah, and maybe in that thread we could discuss whether the .410 would be adequate enough for our wives?? Just kidding -

I bet our wives wished we had two memories, this way we would have NO excuse for not remembering the endless list of things they want us to do. LOL -
Should the .410 be legal for deer?
steve863 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
How far back in years does this go? As long as I remember any centerfire of .22 and over was legal in NYS, and I know .243 have been used as long as I can remember also. -
Should the .410 be legal for deer?
steve863 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
A bow doesn't have knockdown power neither, yet I would be strung up by many here if I suggested bows should be made illegal for hunting. A .223 also doesn't have a whole lot of knockdown power for deer and it wouldn't be my first choice as a deer caliber, but it's not illegal for deer in NYS. I doubt anyone will lobby to make the .410 legal, but in reality there is little reason that it shouldn't be given the other things out there that are perfectly legal. -

steve863 replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I know that I will tick off the bowhunters here, but if one is allowed to hunt deer with a bow, why would the .410 be inadequate? I can't imagine that it wouldn't put a deer down as quick or quicker at 20-30 yards than an arrow would? Yes, one probably shouldn't stretch a shot from a .410 to over 50 yards, if that far, but most bowhunters shouldn't shoot at a deer over 20 or 25 yards yet many do anyway. There won't be a DEC officer under your treestand telling you not to. So in my opinion if bows are legal, than there is little reason that the .410 shouldn't be. It's limits need to be realized by the hunter, just like with any other weapon. -
Sounds like a great idea. Maybe the site administrators can send us a bunch of huntingNY.com patches we could give out to those kind souls who bring in deer. Would be a good plug for this website! And after we get a couple of dozen deer donated we can maybe go hunt some more at Burt's place again?
-
Yeah, and I had to pay for the kids bicycle too, since it got all mangled in the struggle to hold on to that deer. But you are correct, it is still considered hunting and fair chase to steal a deer away like you did!
