  1. Some scopes come with covers that you can use for storage. Or you can buy the rubber bikini type covers that are good for any scope. I just think most people who have the flip open things will keep them on their guns at all times, and then sooner or later will have them in the closed position at the wrong time while afield. So for me it's better not to even own such a contraption.
  2. Man, I really think you got that WRONG! Also posting articles from a QDM website will do mighty little to change the minds of those of us who don't buy into this AR baloney. I think 13BVET has it right. Once the general public is made to think that the DEC is managing the herd for trophy hunting, then you will have more of them turn completely against hunting and join the rabid anti side.
  3. I don't see a need for these flip open covers. Heck, both deer I shot this year came in fast, and if I was fussing with scope covers I probably wouldn't have had a chance for a good shot. I think sooner or later one will get caught with their pants down using these flip open things. Unless it's pouring rain or snowing real hard, I see absolutely NO reason to have the scope glass covered up while afield.
  4. Don't hold your breath. You actually may not even see the additional 7 that is proposed for the Catskills next year. It ain't a done deal yet. Below is the reply I got from Jeremy Hurst when I wrote and asked him a few questions a few weeks ago. Thanks for your note and for expressing your concerns. You are correct that we see no biological need for mandatory ARs. We have repeatedly said that ARs are principally a social issue. It was based on the level of social interest expressed to our administration, that our agency decided to continue ARs in the pilot units and to propose expanding mandatory ARs into several additional units next year. Before ARs are a reality in the seven additional units, we must propose a regulation, a process that entails an 45-day public comment period. You may continue to express your concerns to our administration, local elected officials, and during the regulatory comment period which is likely to occur next February or March. Regards, Jeremy Hurst Wildlife Biologist
  5. Please post what you found in your research. Most of the famous areas for big bucks in this nation do not have AR's. This is all the proof I need that bucks can get big without AR's. Anything else will most likely be biased. State game departments responsibilities are to control deer populations, and how many points a buck happens to have on it's head when it gets shot is of absolutely NO importance. It's only important to those who want antlers to show off. The DEC has said time and time again that AR's have NO biological benefit. They call AR's a "social" issue, and maybe someone could tell me what that has to do with deer biology?
  6. Strategy 2.3.6: Beginning in the 2012 big game hunting season, expand the mandatory antler restriction area to include WMUs 3A, 4G, 4O, 4P, 4R, 4S, and 4W. From http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7211.html
  7. There are a few here that rear their heads only when the topic of AR's come up. The funny thing is they all claim that AR's are the greatest thing since sliced bread and that there are many more big bucks around now in their AR units, yet I have not seen any of them post pictures of themselves killing any of these big bucks. And it's not like they would be shy about posting any such pictures either. LOL
  8. You should join us rifle! We've got Pygmy singing along in his castrato voice this time, along with Growalot in her lovely baritone. If your voice ain't up to it, maybe you could accompany us on the triangle or kazoo?
  9. Wow, it's getting even more violent here. Here you go, all together now, a one and a two....... Kumbaya
  10. I agree with you that ground blinds are really not necessary, but I just don't think it's realistic to expect anyone to remain as motionless as you are suggesting. If one is just moving their eyes, they really won't be covering much territory. I actually move around quite a bit when I stop and think of it. You'll never see the deer that walk behind the tree your sitting against if you just move your eyes and not your head or whole body.
  11. I have always believed that it benefits the hunter to come out of the woods for a while. Get a bite to eat, take a nap, relax, whatever. Sitting all day can make one bored and un-attentive. It's not like all the deer that I have ever seen just walked out in front of me where they were easily spotted. Many times it takes a lot of looking into all the nooks and crannies of the woods to spot a tail or an ear. Being cold, bored and uncomfortable after sitting for 7 hours straight won't help you to be more observant, that's for darn sure.
  12. Close, but NOT quite. LOL What makes some of us chuckle is how some people think that when a big one does finally show up, that it's going to be an easy slam dunk. LOL It obviously wasn't a slam dunk on the big one here, and it surely may not have been a slam dunk on any of those that were passed up beforehand. I have heard people say " I easily could have taken that spike or forkhorn" more times than I could count. "Easily" my buttocks. Until a deer is down and out, NO one can be 100% certain that the deer is going to be dead after the shot. That to me is nothing but wishful overconfidence.
  13. LOL! Thanks for the info. Being a married man whose wife is not overweight nor hopefully will ever look like that woman in the picture, I may never need to use your suggestion. LOL Man, I think one would have to buy a truck load of flour to get the job done with that gal! LOL
  14. Dear God, how would a guy find what a guy needs to find on a blob of flesh like that?? Then again, all you would really need to do is dab a bit of vaseline on any one of those endless folds and you'd probably be good to go! LOL
  15. Hopefully you get one. My motto has always been, if you like eating venison, then put one in the freezer the first opportunity you get. Waiting until the last week of the season may not always work out. After all hunting is not as simple as going to the butcher for a piece of meat.
  16. We are just teasing you, Doc. We love your posts. Sort of like watching a LONG epic movie when we read them. Just can't decide whether they are more like the "10 commandments" or the "Titanic". LOL
  17. I remember you mentioning this buck. If you end up not filling your freezer with a deer this year, you might have to wear that dunce cap for not shooting him when you had the chance! Just pulling your leg here, although there is some truth in this. LOL
  18. LOL! Oh, this is funny!! Doc figures, why use 15 words when he can use 500! LOL
  19. They do listen, but I think they "no habla Ingles"! LOL
  20. +1 That's just the way it goes many times. Deer will get shot by someone else and not us. We don't own the deer, nor can we tell them where they should or shouldn't go.
  21. My uncle has an A-bolt and you do need to take the safety off to load & unload or work the bolt. Older Remington's used to be this way, but since the mid 80's I think their rifles can be loaded & unloaded with the safety on. Winchester's have a 3 position safety as I think newer Ruger's do as well. I don't think it's a real big deal either way if you make sure you have the gun pointed in a safe direction to remove it off safety. Once the bolt is open you are safe for sure.
  22. I hear what your saying Culver. It's all a fine line, but when it comes to possible lives being lost they should put out the fire and not worry about any other issues. How were they sure, that there was no one trapped in the basement or elsewhere in the house? Maybe I missed something in the article, but I don't think firemen ever assume that there is NO one in jeopardy. It could have been a neighbors kid (whose family does pay all fees) playing in the basement with the owners kid and trapped. Things are not always so black and white. I think a lot of ethical issues involved here.
  23. I can understand some thinking that it's the owners tough luck for not paying the fee. But on the other hand I thought police, fire departments, hospitals, EMS, emergency room doctors were there for the public good? If they were to check out everyone to see whether they were criminals, owed taxes, didn't make mortgage payments, etc. etc. before they provided service to them, you'd have a lot of people dying unnecessarily. I know it's a fine line, but these first response people are supposed to save lives and property of everyone as they were trained before they ask any questions as to ability to pay or whether they paid other prior fees. I don't think it's part of their job description to be the judge and jury on who gets their service.
  24. No, me and Doe brought it back from Tanzania and gave it to her as a gift when we went over to her place for some chipmunk stew! LOL
