  1. Every day, either at the office or when I'm home. Every where I go. Master knife. 2.25" blade. 5" open and just 3" closed. Perfect size for most anything for daily use.
  2. Congratulations on your 50th Anniversary Eddie. Amazing!!!
  3. This what I suggest as well. One stand and several receivers. Comfortable too.
  4. I had heard or read some where... that the best way to determine proper draw weight for an individual was to do this: Sit on the floor with your legs straight out and draw back the maximium you can w/o lifting and drawing down on the bow to pull back. Then make all your adjustments from that draw weight, i.e. sighting it in, etc. The reasoning behind this is because this way, you will always be able to pull your bow back even after sitting in the cold and having to pull back in an awkward position. Make sense to me.
  5. The key to the retina lock really is to eliminate the peep sight. It does tell you if you are torqueing the bow as well. Once this type of device... retina lock, no-peep, anchor sight are set up you do not use a peep sight. This type of device replaces the traditional in the string peep sight. It assure that that your line up perfect each time as well as shows you whether the bow is torqued. I've been uses the no-peep alignment device from Timberland Archery (out of business) for about 6 years and will never go back to a peep. If I had to replace this device, I'd probably buy the Anchor Sight, but would not rule out the Retina Lock.
  6. May I make a few suggestions: 1) Get measured for each bow you shoot and have each one set up perfect for you when you try them out. 2) Once you have decided on the bow and the poundage have your arrows custom fit with the proper Front Of Center (FOC) and weight. I have bought many arrows over the years and will never buy packaged arrows again. See the tutorial in this forum at http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/5030-how-i-built-my-arrows/ 3) Buy a single pin sight and set it for 25 yds. Modern bows shoot flat enough out to 30 yds. You may have to aim slightly high on the deer at the longer distances of 35 - 40 but with practice on a deer target you can get very good out to 40 yds. 1 pin is less confusing at the moment of truth and less clutter in the sight picture as well. Good Luck and watch out for the addiction!
  7. It seems that every forum I have belonged there are always the few that try and control the forum by bullying and being antagonistic. It's just the way it is and I doubt it will ever change.
  8. All I've ever used... single pin pendulum Tru-Glo. I changed out the fibre from green to orange as I see it better.
  9. OK gotcha Dom... these guys are holding high to drop the bullet into the target. Yeah then they are trying to compensate. If they were doing it for fun at targets maybe but to try to make a clean kill then that would be foolish and irresponsible. Thanks for clarifying.
  10. I hadn't heard that? I too agree that holding high to compensate is poor shooting. I like to sight a gun in so that does not shoot too high or too low out to a certain kill range, i.e. not more than 2" high or 2" low out to 250 yards yet at 100 yds it may shoot 1" high and at 150 1.5 " high and then zero in at 250.
  11. I will need some more info than you are providing to answer your question. What distance did you sight the gun in at originally? Are you using the same grain round? Re: Let's say you were sighted in for 1" high at 100 yds and shot at a target only 50 yards away it could be spot on a 50. If you zeroed the gun at 100 yds using a 100 grain round and then changed to a 80 gr or less round the round would shoot high. Start from the beginning and give me some much needed info and I'll see if I can help.
  12. I got a FoxPro E-Call. I was wondering what you experienced yote hunters recommend I start calling with and progress to. How long should I wait if no response. I plan to be out at day break and get set up. Any advice is appreciated. I have male and female yotes calls as well as eastern cottontail, lightning Jack, lucky bird, hairy woodpecker, rodent distress, jackrabbit and cottontail distress amd more.
  13. Re: My sons .243. I do not have a chronograph but we did sight in zeroed at 45 yds as the trajectory charts indicated but when I shot at 100 the shots were about 3" high whereas they were supposed to be at about 1.25 high. So what we did was just sight in 1.25" high at 100 where the trajectory chart said we should be if zeroed at 45 yds. We ended up turning the scope down 12 clicks and to the Left 2 clicks from where the rifle was sighted for deer using 100gr Remington. This sounded about right as the 58gr Hornady were shooting about 4-5" high and about 1.5" Right last week at 100yds. So next Sept we will reverse the clicks and shoot to see how the rifle shoots. Re: My 22-250. Shooting 50gr Remington JHP, my rifle was much closer to being on at 100yds after zeroing in at 45yds. Only a few clicks and were 1.25" high at 100. I do think it does make sense to zero at 45yds when sighting a new scope and then go out to 100yds to fine tune. Ths trajectory charts did not work as well as I had hoped but as I said they were close and it was easy fine tune at 100 once the 45 was established.
  14. It is particularly important that you can enter the piece from the prevailing downwind side, otherwise every time you enter you the land you push the deer out. If so, i would try to hunt the downwind edges and leave the rest of the land as a refuge where deer can feel secure. Never enter the land during the season except to retrieve a deer. I no expert but If the winds are right and you follow this protocol, this land could be a real treasure.
  15. I really need to raise the deer sighting settings up as well.
  16. I just ordered the FX3 as a discontinued from FoxPro for $239... good deal. Better than the Spitfire for a few bucks more.
  17. I'm thinking of buying a FoxPro electronic call. Either the Spitfire for $199 or the Wildfire for $299. Anyone use these calls? How do they work for you?
  18. Well let's see if I can add my slant to this. A whitetail deer to me a beautiful animal. All year long I appreciate the absolute beauty and grace of the whitetail deer. In the summer I spend many hours at dusk looking with binos scouting the deer in my area. I love watching them and look forward to seeing the buck that makes my heart race. Something begins to happen to me about the first of Sept. I begin to shift into this hunting mode and although I still appreciate their beauty I can't stop thinking of killing a great buck with my bow. Now a doe to me anyway, is always an after thought. It is something I do for the meat and only late in the season if I haven't killed a nice buck. Now to get on topic. To me, killing a buck doesn't not have the same emotional affect on my heart as killing a doe. I seem to have some compassion for the doe and I do sometimes feel some sorrow after killing a doe. That being said, I do not feel the same about a buck, especially a really nice one. Killing a buck I feel victorious... like I sought, I saw, I conquered. Maybe seeing the horns is the reason. They seem to be a different animal to me and I don't have the same compassion for the buck. Strange huh!!
  19. My son has a Ruger M77.243. We plan to use the rifle for both deer and varmint/coyotes. We shot the gun today at the range and with 100gr Winchester Super X and the gun was dead on at 100yds. The bullet shoots 2960 fps. He shot some Hornady 58gr and they were about 4" high at 100 yds. This bullet shoots 3925 fps. As deer season is over and we plan to coyote hunt and then shoot woodys this summer Spring/Summer. He plans to re-sight the Hornady's in at 1 1/4 inches high at 100. Using the trajectory calculator from http://biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx This rifle will be good out to about 300 yds and never vary in elevation +/- 1.5 inches. Next October, we plan to go back to the range and readjust the rifle for the 100gr bullets for deer season. Sighting it in 3" high at 100 and the gun will be accurate +/- 3" out to 290 yds. We plan to write down the necessary elevation clicks so we can just re-set it the following year... take a few shots and it should be on. Your thoughts?
  20. I shot Winchester 55 gr JHP ballistic tips today. After shooting it a few times and getting used to it, i put 3 of 5 inside a quarter at 100 yds. It' was sighted dead on at 100 from the guy I bought it from. The trigger is really light and took some getting acclimated to it. I plan to shoot 50gr Remington UMC JHP at 3945 fps. I plan to sight it in at 1 1/4 inch high at 100 yards and according to trajectory charts at http://biggameinfo.com/BalCalc.aspx the rifle will not vary +/- 1.5 inches out to 300 yards. It also states thet zeroed in at 45 yards will be the same. This means i can hold on a critter dead center here I want to hit and it should not drop or rise more than 1.5 inches. So next Sat or Sun I'll go fine tune it. Love the gun.
  21. I have been enamoured by the Tikka rifle since the first time I saw one about 4 years ago. I was looking at spending the money on a 22-250 Tikka and adding the scope until I cam acroos the model 70 I got today, otherwise I was gonna order the Tikka next week. Love the butter smooth action of the Tikka... non better.
  22. I just bought a Winchester, Model 70 22-250 with a 4X12 Simmons Prohunter scope all for $500. It is a "Coyote" model, just 7 years old and has had just 21 rounds through it the day it was sighted in 7 years ago. Not a scratch on it. Pics below.
